Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Walden knew it was probably a little too soon for him to really be thinking about switching to a school closer to where Romey lived, but he was top of his class at home and he'd been invited to check out some more prestigious colleges than the one he was currently enrolled in. There was nothing wrong with going to London and checking out an open house, especially when it met he'd be able to surprise Romy with a visit and see if she was as into him as the texting and everything suggested.

He showed up at the college, glancing around at the boards they had set up talking about student success rates and how many people got into top ten schools, but was distracted by a familiar face. One he didn't really get along with, but they were looking at each other and it just seemed awkward not to say anything. Walden cleared his throat and walked over to Pyxis. "Hello."

"Are you kidding me? None of my friends know what they want to do with their lives." Pyxis told him with a snort, shaking her head. "Except Lavinia. She's my best friend and part time lover. She wants to be a lawyer."

She glanced around. "We can look at things together. If you want." She held her folder closer to her chest. "Just don't give me a reason to frisk you."

Walden laughed at that. "Yeah, my mates Dudley and Piers have no idea what they want to die with their lives, but I think they'll be okay. Dudley's dad is in sales. He does something with drills, and I think Dudley's thinking of following into the family business. Piers is probably going to be a mechanic."

He started walking through the rows of booths. "Going into law enforcement is a really noble calling. Are you afraid you're going to have to arrest your lawyer friend for corruption?"

"Arrest Lavinia? Are you kidding me?" Pyxis laughed and shook her head. "No. She's brilliant and I know she's going to be corrupt. But, I also know that she could talk people in circles and get herself off of any charges."

She shrugged. "Besides. If you want to make it as a lawyer, you have to be corrupt. It's all about lying and making bad people look good."

Walden laughed at that. "I guess I'm an optimist," he said. "I want to believe that lawyers can work to better people's lives. Get innocents set free. Fight to protect the environment and worker's rights."

He picked up a pamphlet form a cat lover's club and turned it over in his hands. "My nan would like this. She breeds cats."

"I think you live in a world of delusions." Pyxis informed him as she walked up to the table with him. "I don't. I know I'm going to be arresting at least half of my friends."

She looked down at the pamphlet and grinned. "Are you telling me you're a third generation cat breeder and you're giving it up to be a politician? I love cats. All I do is watch cat videos on youtube."

Walden laughed at that, shaking his head. "I love cats, but I want to do something else wit my life. I'll probably still have a million of them in my house when I get older. I'm going to give Romy a kitten."

He looked down at Pyxis. "Do you have a cat?" he asked. "We've always got tons of kittens around the house. Grandma sells a lot of them, but we also give them out to good homes. The ones who can't be show cats, you know?"

"Romy's Dad will probably kill you for giving her a kitten." Pyxis informed Walden, shaking her head. "But, then again. It's Romy. He lets that bitch get by with so much shit because she's his favourite."

Pyxis shook her head. "No. I don't. I-" She narrowed her eyes at him. "How do you manage to be so attractive and yet so dorky at the same time? It's stupid." She laughed, feeling more relaxed. "We should find a music club or something."

"Romy was really excited about the idea of getting a kitten," Walden said, smiling at Pyxis. "I don't think her father will mind. I don't think you should call her a bitch, you know. She's really sweet."

He looked around for any music clubs. "I don't think I'm that attractive or that dorky. I'm just me," Walden said. "There's a jazz club. Would you want a cat, or are you happy without a pet? My favourite cat is about to give birth. Winky."

"I call everyone a bitch." Pyxis pointed out. "It's the Samuel L Jackson I pretend is in me when I masturbate." She snorted softly and looked him over.

"You're attractive. You're just... I don't know. Too nice." Pyxis pointed out as she slid her arm into his. "I like jazz. But, I like rock more." She glanced up at him. "I want a cat. I've just never found one I bond over."

Walden would it a little weird to be walking arm-in-arm with Pyxis when he knew she didn't like him very much. Or at least, she didn't talk about him like she liked him much. But she seemed to be making an effort, and that was the important thing.

He smiled at her. "When Winky gives birth, you could look at her kittens and see if there's one you like. Winky's not pure-bred. I rescued her. So we can't sell her kittens." Walden pointed to a rock music club. "There's something you might like, then. Your boyfriend seemed like he liked rock."

Pyxis walked over and snagged one of the pamphlets, then rejoined Walden as she looked over it. "Sometimes I forget that Rider is my boyfriend. Thanks for reminding me."

She hummed thoughtfully. "Should I ride a train all the way to Surrey?" She asked, eyeing him. "Or do you want to add me to skype and I can pick one via webcam?"

"I'll add you on Skype," Walden said. "I guess you're not like Romy. You don't have a parent living in Surrey that you could stay with while you look at the kittens. I can bring it to you when I visit her, if you decide you want one."

He looked down at her. "We get along a lot better when we're not tired." Walden gave Pyxis a soft smile. "You're not so bad."

"I don't know. I'm sure we'll find something to argue about." Pyxis told him with a snort, looking him over. She chewed at her bottom lip and then thought about Rider. And how she kind of missed him.

"I'm hungry." Pyxis grabbed his hand and started leading him off campus. "My favourite restaurant is down here. We're going."

"I --" Walden was supposed to be exploring expanding his educational horizons. He glanced back at the room full of school clubs as he was pulled away. "Okay," he said. "But we should come back right after."

He looked down at Pyxis. "I'm a vegetarian," he told her. "Does your favourite place have something that caters to my dietary requirements?

Pyxis stared at Walden for a moment, then shrugged. "I'm a vegan. It's not a problem." She told him with a shrug and walked him across the street from the school. She tugged him into the place and laughed when everyone greeted her, raising her hands up in the air and spinning.

"Yes. Yes. I've returned." She told them and then sat down at a table in the corner. "What sort of thing do you like to eat?"

Walden was impressed Pyxis was taking him to a place where she was so well-known. And that she was a vegan. "I don't know. I'm pretty easy," he said, sitting down at a table, even though he sort of loomed over it. "I make a lot of curry at home."

He picked up a menu, looking it over. "What about you? What do you usually get here?" She seemed almost like a different person from the girl he'd met early in the morning. Not like someone who could harass Romy as much as she was supposed to. Maybe Walden could get them to be friends. "You know, Romy was saying she thought she might like being a vegetarian."

"I usually get the Golden Burger. It's a vegan steak patty with this special sauce they make up. And I just tell them to run it through the garden." Pyxis admitted. "They're probably already making it. We should get spring rolls too. I'll buy. Get whatever you want. My parents are loaded."

Pyxis took the soda from the server and took the wrapper off her straw, looking at Walden. "I know you really like her. And I can respect that. Rider really likes her too. I don't know what it is about her that guys want, something I obviously don't have. But just... Romy really likes meat. She loves bacon and sausage and steak. She once entered a contest with your Dad to see who could eat the most steak and she actually won. The problem with girls like Romy is that they mold their personality to fit whatever the boy they fancy is looking for. She's like a fucking siren or something."

Walden felt a bit uncomfortable letting Pyxis pay, but he nodded in agreement, ordering himself a water and the same burger Pyxis was getting. "You can enjoy eating meat and still have ethical issues with it," he said, shrugging. "I don't think Romy is like that. She's sweet. She just wants to be able to be herself."

He pursed his lips for a moment. "Maybe we should stay off the topic of my girlfriend, since I know the two of you don't get along. Neither of you is likely to have an unbiased view of the other."

"Walden. I know you like her, but you don't even know her." Pyxis shook her head and looked him over. "I'm not saying anything about her because I don't like her. I've tried to be her friend and she just doesn't like me because Rider and I have been really close since we were kids. She's jealous of the fact that I have him."

She took a sip of her soda. "I'm just saying. How long did you know her before you agreed to date her? She's never had a boyfriend and it's kind of weird that you look exactly like her father."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Walden frowned a little at that. "I know I look like her step-father, but we didn't grow up together. I like her. She likes me. We're in the process of really getting to know each other. That's how dating works when you're not with someone you've known your whole life."

This was why he'd suggested not talking about Romy. "You can't tell me your opinions are unbiased. The two of you don't get along. Of course your opinions about her are biased."

Pyxis frowned at his assumption. "Being biased would only matter if I was trying to fuck you right now or wanted you to be my boyfriend. I'm trying to help you out and make you see that she's not this pretty princess and sweet girl that you've made her out to be."

She shook her head and frowned down at the table. "I'm sure you'd let her say whatever she wanted about me. I'm sure you've heard every bad thing about me there was to say. Whatever. Just eat your fucking food when it gets here and I'll leave you alone for the rest of the day."
