Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Pyxis had never been more terrified in her life. She especially did not understand why she had even agreed to this in the first place. How had Dudley talked her into meeting his parents? They were driving all the way to London to see the flat Dudley was living in and to meet the girlfriend that Dudley had managed to make for himself. And because it was such a big deal, she'd spent her entire Friday night cleaning the flat and making it parent friendly.

She looked at herself in the dress. It wasn't even a typical dress she'd wear. It was a nice dress that Dudley had helped her pick out. She was waiting for them to arrive, brushing and fixing her hair for third time in a mirror in their sitting room, glancing at Walden. Why was he looking at her like that? And why did she have to wear heels? They hurt her feet. "What?" She frowned, then glanced at Dudley. "Why are you two staring at me?"

Dudley let Walden take his parents over, shaking his head as he pulled Pyxis close. "They don't even know you yet," he said. "They're just made at me because I said they were being rude, asking about your family money and if you were going to inherit it. Anyone could see they were being rude. They're only annoyed because they know they should be ashamed of themselves."

He kissed Pyxis's temple. "You're doing a great job, Pyxis. You're amazing. They'll come around. I promise. If they don't... well, they're my parents, but they're still wrong about a lot of things. Like the way they feel about Harry's gay godfather, yeah?"

"God. Don't tell them about my gay brother or any of my gay friends." Pyxis laughed softly, pressing their foreheads together. "I'm trying to be perfect for you. But, I'm not perfect. I'm just putting on a show of who they want me to be."

She kissed him softly, then pulled back. "How bad does the chicken look?"

"I just pretend to be who they want me to be most of the time too," Dudley said, shrugging. "It's just what you do with parents, right? With ones like mine, anyway. Even Walden keeps things from his mum and gran."

He smiled at her, glancing at the chicken in the kitchen, and then laughed. "It's fine," he said. "At least it's not raw, right? All the sides look great."

Pyxis smiled at Dudley. "You're good to me. Even if your parents don't like me." She kissed him softly on the lips and pressed close to him before she pulled back. "Definitely not raw.

She led him into the kitchen and grabbed the bottle of wine she'd bought. "I hope you like wine."

Dudley pulled out Pyxis's chair for her before he sat in his own, giving his parents a nervous smile. "I'll carve the chicken," he said, getting to his feet again. "Since Pyxis and Walden don't eat meat." He picked up a carving knife, beginning to work at getting reasonable portions of dry chicken for everyone."

"Do you drink a lot, Pyxis?" Petunia asked, giving her a polite smile. "I suppose your family probably has quite a collection of wine." She looked at her son for a moment, then back at Pyxis. Perhaps she'd try. "My hobby is gardening. Dudley might have told you. I've won prizes from the council."

Pyxis sat down in the chair and settled in, opening the bottle of wine for everyone. She poured the glasses full and put the wine on the table, feeling like Petunia was judging her too harshly.

"I don't drink much." Pyxis admitted, shrugging. "Only if I'm spending time with my friends at parties. Or having a night out with mates." She hesitated. "I read a lot. I read true crime novels and books about history. I'm interested in History."

"But you're planning on becoming some kind of police officer?" Petunia asked, taking a sip of her wine. "What are you going to do when you have children? Surely you can't be planning on raising them and having a dangerous career like that?"

Dudley hated his parents sometimes. He took a long drink from his glass of wine. "I think it's interesting that Pyxis is interested in History," he said. "Are you taking History at college, then? I'm signed up for History. We haven't talked about what courses we're going to take yet."

"I'm in the criminal law program, but I'll be taking some electives. I'll sign up for history so that we can be in the same class." Pyxis's voice was soft as she looked down sadly at her mashed potatoes. At least she'd gotten those right. "Having a dangerous job like the one I want will help keep my children safe. I think that's a better sign of being a good mother than sitting around at home all day planting flowers and making fish fingers."

Vernon looked at Pyxis. It was clear that she was feeling very down about the way she was being treated. But, there was no stopping his wife.

Walden saw Petunia recoil at that comment like she'd been slapped and decided to step in. "Pyxis is right," he said firmly. "And I"m sorry, Mrs. Dursley, but you're being very rude to her. Pyxis isn't you and she's never going to be. Dudley doesn't want to be with his mother and personally I think that's healthy. Pyxis is a great girl. My mum and gran love her. If you can't see past your own prejudices and your idea of her inheriting her family's wealth, then it's your loss."

Petunia stared at Walden for a moment, then stood up, throwing her napkin down at the table. "Walden Figg, I've never heard such rudeness in my life," she said, scowling at him. "I said nothing untoward about Pyxis. She's a lovely girl. Very well bred. I don't know where you learned this from, but I know it's not how your mother raised you. I can only assume that you've come to the city to use drugs."

"Mum!" Dudley protested, looking up at her. "Walden isn't on drugs. He's Walden, Mum. He wouldn't do drugs."

"I'm sure that whole family is on something!" Petunia said, shaking her head. "Living in that house full of cats with that daft old woman. Vernon, we're leaving. Dudley, come walk us to the car and we'll talk about you moving into the dorms."

"Mum, I'm not going to move into the dorms," Dudley protested, even as he stood to follow her command to walk them to the car. "Pyxis worked really hard today. Just... I... Please. I really want to be with her. I want to make her happy and you're making her so sad."

Pyxis stared down at her plate as her shoulders started to shake. She'd never felt this way before. So... bad about herself. Was she really that bad? So bad that she couldn't even make her boyfriend's mother like her? She had tried so hard and just like in every other area of her life, she'd failed.

Vernon looked at Pyxis as she started to cry, feeling awful for her. He was not like his wife. He wasn't tolerant of most things, but he had seen that Pyxis had made an effort to at least try and impress them. He touched her shoulder and squeezed it gently.

"Petunia." Vernon looked at her. "You will come back in here and you will sit at this table and eat your chicken. You will drink your wine. You will keep your mouth shut or we will have to start discussing your sister and all of the things she does wrong."

Petunia pursed her lips, staring at Vernon for a long moment before she made her way back over to the table, taking a seat. "Very well," she said, picking up her fork. "I'll stay for dinner."

Walden wrapped his arm around Pyxis. He didn't care if she wasn't his girlfriend, she was his friend. He glanced at Dudley, then pulled away and got to his feet. "I'll be right back," he said.

Dudley nodded, shifting his chair closer to Pyxis so he could wrap his arms around her and pull her close, kissing her softly. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry." He looked at his father, giving him a small smile. "Thank you, Dad."

Walden came back into the room with all three of their cats, setting Loras down in Pyxis's lap and letting Winky and Raptor down to rub against her legs under the table. Cat love was always helpful. Even from a queen like Loras.

Pyxis looked down at the cat in her lap and rubbed at him, listening to him as he started to purr and rub against her. She looked up at Walden with teary eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. It wasn't working, even with petting the cats.

"I tried really hard to make sure this dinner would be perfect." Pyxis didn't look up from her cat. "I cleaned for three days after two boys who don't know a thing about taking care of themselves or the house they live in. I bought a chicken, despite my feelings about it. I put on a stupid dress that doesn't fit me right. I fixed my hair. I put on a personality that isn't me, all the impress you."

She looked up from Loras finally, settling on looking at Petunia. "And you know what? I feel absolutely stupid. I shouldn't ashamed of who I am or try to be anything different. I'm a strong woman who has plans for her future. Who doesn't take any negativity from anyone and who doesn't really care what anyone thinks of her. I don't wear dresses. I wear boots and denims and t-shirts. I let my hair go wild. I only put on makeup if I have to."

She shook her head. "And you know what?" She stood up and unzipped her dress, stepping out of it. "I'm going to go get dressed in clothes that are mine. I'm through with trying to impress you." She walked off into another room to put her clothes back on.

Vernon stared at Pyxis for a moment, feeling a bit confused, then looked at Dudley. "You like her, then?"

Walden grinned when Pyxis stood up and took her dress off in front of them before leaving the room. And not just because he'd seen Pyxis in a state of undress again. He wanted to clap for her, but he'd already gotten himself put fairly firmly on Petunia's hit list tonight, so he kept the clapping to himself.

Dudley flushed a little, looking at his father and then at his mother, whose mouth was gaping open in shock. "Yeah," he said. He straightened up in his chair. "Yeah, I really do. I like Pyxis just the way she is, not the way she was pretending to be to impress you. If you let yourself get to really know her, you'd like her that way too. She's amazing."

"Well." Petunia felt very flustered by everything that had happened so far this evening. "Well, I don't know. She's a very strong-minded girl, isn't she?"

"She is," Dudley agreed. "I love that about her."

Pyxis came back into the room in a pair of purple, zebra-striped leggings and a Stooges t-shirt, her boots untied and her hair undone. She sat down at the table and looked down at her food.

"The mashed potatoes are going to get cold." She told them all, shoving her fork into the pile on her plate.

Petunia stared at Pyxis for a long moment, then let out a little squeak of horror before picking her wine glass up and downing a good portion of the wine. "Did... did you say you made dessert, Walden?"

Walden was very amused now. Pyxis looked hot, but she also looked like the last girl in the world Petunia would want Dudley with. Mostly because she was so hot. "I did," he said. "Pyxis showed me some vegan recipe blogs. They're really good."

"Vegan food's not so bad," Dudley agreed, nodding as he ate his chicken. "I usually just eat the same things as Walden and Pyxis unless we're getting take away."

Pyxis felt awful. Even if she'd stood up for herself, there was a chance Dudley would break up with her soon. She watched as he walked out the door to take his parents down to their car, then leaned against the wall.

She was hating life pretty hard. It was times like this when she missed Rider, who, no matter what the circumstances were, was ready to fuck her to make her forget all her problems.

"Hey." Walden walked over to Pyxis, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her to his chest, holding her tightly. He pet at her hair. "I'm really proud of you," he said. "That probably sounds stupid. Just... Dudley's parents are pretty terrible. You stood up to them and survived and just... It was amazing to watch."

He pulled back, giving her a soft smile. "Not just because you took your dress off. You really showed them who you are. What you're made of. You're so amazing, Pyxis. Smart, brave, and beautiful."

Pyxis was kind of trembling in Walden's arms. She stared up at him, on the verge of crying and shook her head. He didn't know. She'd ruined everything and she was going to be alone again.

"He's going to dump me." Pyxis replied quietly. "He's going to dump me because his parents don't like me and I'm going to be alone again. People don't like me."

"What?" Walden gave Pyxis a confused look. "No, Pyxis. Dudley's not like that. He's not going to dump you. He was in awe of you tonight. He's never really had the bollocks to stand up to his parents, but he tried all night for you. He was on your side the whole time. Because you're special. Anyone can see you're special."

He kissed her forehead, rubbing her arms. "I like you, Pyxis. I... honestly, I love you. I've never had a friend like you before and I'm really honoured you chose to be mine. Even after all the other stuff between us."

Pyxis blinked away tears. "That's the problem. He doesn't stand up to his parents. And if his mother decides he shouldn't be with me, he's going to cave eventually. It doesn't matter how rich I am. She won't want him with me."

She chewed at her bottom lip and wiped away her tears. "You're not like everyone else. You're weird."

Walden reached up to help wipe away Pyxis's tears. "I like being weird," he said, giving her a soft smile. "Especially if it means I get to really appreciate you." He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. He pulled back when he heard the door opening.

Dudley walked into the flat with a grin on his face, but it faded when he saw Pyxis crying. "What's wrong?"

Pyxis glanced at Dudley and shook her head. "Just your girlfriend here. Worried that you're going to dump her. That's all."

She sighed softly and walked over to Dudley. "What did they say about me when you walked them to the car?"
