Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Being Tom Riddle's daughter frequently turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. For one thing, nobody had ever handed her a friendship like Merlin had been handed Draco's. She'd grown up with Merlin telling her that he and Draco didn't want to play with her and been too shy to ask Pansy if maybe she wanted to be friends, even though she knew Merlin wouldn't have minded that. At school, everyone acted afraid. Most Slytherin families tried really hard for boys anyway, and who was she supposed to be friends with, Astoria Greengrass?

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Her father respected intelligence and ambition. She was descended from Salazar Slytherin. She could sit down with her father and have a frank conversation about her future. The worst thing he could do was... Well, honestly she didn't want to think about the worst thing he could do because the worst seemed pretty darn worst to her. Ending up married to some dirty old man in Albania or Romania or wherever he was trying to strengthen his hold in Europe. June put on her best dutiful daughter face and knocked on the door to her father's office. Narcissa had had her baby. Everyone had to be in a good mood now, right?

Tom had been a little busy when he'd heard the knock on the door. The child that Narcissa Malfoy had given birth to certainly was not a Malfoy and didn't resemble much of the blacks either. However, there was a possibility the child belonged to Sirius Black. Which is what he was trying to figure out.

He grunted softly to himself and let out a sigh, waving a hand so the door would open. "June. We weren't scheduled to meet until tomorrow."

"Carpe Diem," June said, walking into the room. She took a seat on one of the chairs in front of Tom's desk. She should have brought her notes with her. "I just wanted to speak with you as soon as possible and I know everyone else is probably busy with the new baby."

She smiled at her father. "I know you want me to get married after Hogwarts, and I respect that, but I've been getting really good marks in my classes, especially Charms. I might be more useful doing research, maybe. Or even going into politics like Uncle Abraxas. I know Draco's going the political route, but since Merlin's following in your footsteps don't you think it would be useful to have a child in straight-politics as well? I could be like... an ambassador or something."

Not this. Tom looked at his daughter with a heavy sigh and shook his head. He shuffled some papers around on his desk and then eyed her seriously. There was no way she actually thought that he'd be okay with something like this.

"June." Tom shook his head again, to get his point across. "You are my daughter. Your blood is far to valuable to have you become a career woman and an old maid. I'm already having trouble finding a husband for you."

"I can have a career and children," June said. "There are woman who do that, Dad." Granted, they usually weren't pure-blood women, but so what? June refused to turn into her mother, bored and bitter and unfulfilled.

"I'm not saying I don't want to do everything you expect me to do. I just thought... I don't know. Everyone you expect doesn't have to be all I do, does it?" June studied him for a moment. "There's Regulus Black. We're seeing each other now anyway."

Tom gave his daughter a frown. "The Blacks are of good blood, but that Regulus boy is not right for you. I'm letting you have your fun with him while I find you a husband, but he will not be my first choice. He's not focused. And he's a Gryffindor."

He frowned. "If you can find a man I approve of, you may marry him. But, if you don't find one by your seventeenth birthday, I will marry you to Viktor Krum."

"Viktor Krum?" June repeated incredulously. "The Quidditch player?" How was that a better fit for her than Regulus? At least she knew Regulus, even if they'd only just started dating.

She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "What kind of person would you approve of?" she asked. "At least give me some guidelines."

"What is wrong with Viktor Krum? He's a large and strong young man with a career." Tom informed his daughter. "And his family has always fought for my cousin, even if a bit reluctantly."

He eyed his daughter for a moment and shook his head. "Someone with a strong head on their shoulders. Calm and reserved with a large ambition and a belief in our cause, June."

Large and strong. Like those were traits June was looking for in a husband. "Maybe Krum is nice, but I don't know him. Telling me he's large doesn't exactly inspire my faith in his ability to have a decent conversation."

She didn't exactly think someone calm and reserved would be any fun either. "I have ambition, Dad. And talent. I just want to do something with my life. I don't want to turn into Mum."

"You're nothing like your mother. She's weak and an alcoholic." Tom informed his daughter and shook his head. "You are much better than that, June. Being a wife doesn't limit you in the world. Your mother did absolutely nothing with her fame or money."

Tom shook his head and reached across the desk, touching her hand. "You could be like Narcissa Malfoy. You could throw large functions to raise money for charities. You could feed the poor. But, that doesn't mean you have to be hands on."

She could throw parties. June stared at her father for a long moment. "Do you really think that's the kind of life I want? To sit at home having babies and planning parties? Maybe Narcissa likes doing it, but I'm not like her. I'd rather be a spinster with a career."

She pulled her hand away from him. "I want to be hands on. I want to create great things. Like Rowena Ravenclaw or Helga Hufflepuff. They both managed to have children and do something with their lives. And that was centuries ago. I don't see you telling Merlin he has to worry more about kids and marriage than anything else. You're even letting him marry Draco."

Tom frowned at that. His daughter didn't know the sacrifices he'd made to get to where he was. Or the sacrifices her brother had made. Or what Merlin had been through to become the man he was becoming. He frowned at her and stood.

"Is that what you want?" Tom asked his daughter, arching a brow. "Do you want the same treatment as your brother?"

June hesitated. She knew some of what Merlin had been through and she wasn't sure she really wanted the same treatment as him, but she wanted the relative freedom he got. She wanted to be her own person.

"I want you to treat me like a person and not a convenient gift to be given to the most strategically important ally." She looked up at him. "Please, Dad."

"I treat you like a person. I treat you like you are my daughter and I'm trying to find the best way to support your future." Tom frowned at his daughter and shook his head. "Do you have any idea who you are? What people want to do to our family?"

He shook his head. "Do you have any idea what I've done to make sure this family succeeded. That the world would be better for us? You want to be treated with respect, and yet, you don't respect me. The things I've done for you."

"I know who I am. I know who you are. I know what people want to do to us," June said. "Why can't I try to do great things too? You can't really think the best way to support my future is to marry me to someone I don't even know."

She stood up too. "I know what you've done for me, Dad. I go to a great school because of you. I live better than most people because you worked hard for what we have. I'm in a better position that most of the world, but I want to do something with that. Something beside throw parties or raise children. Maybe that life is right for some people, but it's not right for me. I'm your daughter."

Tom reached into his desk and pulled out a letter he'd put in there days before. He frowned at her for a moment and then held it out to her, doing his best not to sneer. She was his daughter and in his own way, he loved her. Kind of.

"Your boyfriend wants to marry you." Tom informed her. "You barely know him and he's asked his father to bid for your hand."

"I know," June said, reaching out and taking the letter from her father. "We discussed it. Why do you think I mentioned him to you? We both have to marry and we like each other. He wouldn't stop me from doing whatever I wanted to do with my life."

She was doing her best not to cross her arms over her chest or stomp her foot or do anything else that would make her father angrier than he already was. She just wanted a real life. "So what? He's not exactly the sort of man you want for me, is he? He's not calm or level-headed, even if he is smart and from a good family." He wasn't boring.

"He's none of the things I want for you." Tom shook his head and frowned, looking back at June. "His mother and father were both Gryffindors. His father was nearly wiped from his own family tree for being far too rebellious and sympathetic towards Muggles."

He frowned. "I think he's using you." He told her. "For who you are. I don't think he cares about you personally. I think he cares about what you can give him>"

"Have you ever even talked to him?" June asked, frowning at her father. Regulus wasn't that kind of person. He was nice to her. He wasn't scared of her or her family. He was her friend as well as her boyfriend. "He's not like that. He's not that manipulative."

She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. "He's a Black. What would marrying me get him that he couldn't already get himself with a bit of extra work?"

"His father can't be trusted." Tom felt like he was about to explode in anger. He frowned at June and shook his head, then grabbed the picture of the baby that Abraxas had sent him. His newest grandchild of sorts.

"His father impregnated his own cousin." Tom informed her, showing her the picture of the baby. "This is Narcissa Malfoy's latest child."

June blinked down at the picture of the little girl, bundled up in pink blankets. The black hair and big, grey eyes certainly didn't look like they'd come from Augustus, but she wasn't sure she saw Regulus's father in their either. She glanced at the photo and then at her dad and then back at the picture.

"I wouldn't be marrying his father," she pointed out. "And the Blacks have been prone to marrying their cousins for generations. You probably know wizarding genealogy better than I do. If Abraxas is sending you photos of her, he can't be that upset by it."

"You don't understand this. And neither does Abraxas." Tom frowned at his daughter and shook his head. "I want what is best for you, June. I want to make you happy so that you don't end up like your mother."

He looked at the photo and sighed. "But, I can't accept this. I can't accept the boy you are seeing."

"Making me happy isn't about my marriage!" June snapped. "You're not listening to me, Dad. You're just saying the same things phrased a slightly different way like you think that will convince me of your point of view. I don't agree with you. I don't think I'm ever going to agree with you."

She gave him a frustrated look, then sat back down. "So go back to what you were doing. Let me have my fun and then hand me over to Krum. But if you honestly think that's going to stop me from becoming like Mum, you're deluding yourself."

Tom shook his head as he looked at his daughter. "You're an idiot." He informed her. "You are the dumbest girl I've ever met and I married your mother. You don't know what you want because you're a stupid little girl who thinks she's capable of doing more in a man's world."

He shook his head and then pulled his wand, pointing it at her. "Maybe I should have trained you like I did your brother."

June was going to tell her father that of course she was capable of doing more, but then he was pointing his wand at her. She stared at him for a moment, speechless, hand twitching towards her own wand in her pocket.

"I'm not an idiot," she said, trying to keep her voice calm. "I'm your daughter."

"If you were my daughter, you would listen to me." Tom told her, his voice rough. He could see her grabbing for her wand and before she could, he hit her with a hex to send a stinging pain through her hand.

"I wouldn't suggest it, June." Tom told her. "Get out of my office or something bad will happen to you."

June bit her cheek to keep in the hiss of pain when her father hexed her hand. "Fine," she said, getting to her feet. She just wanted to do something with her life. Her father, of all people, should understand that.

She pushed her hair behind her ear, moving away from him and his stupid, backwards ideals. June wanted to scream and through her power around and maybe punch some pillows. She paused in the doorway, turning to look at her father. "I'm just as good at wandless magic as Merlin is, you know," she told him. "Only I had to teach myself to control it." June took another step out of the room and then reached out with her magic and slammed the door behind her. She'd go see Regulus, just to prove to her father that she didn't care what he thought. He had no idea who she was or what was best for her.

Regulus was sitting in the court yard. The first snow of the had fallen a few days before and he liked to sit outside. He was chewing on an ice mice slowly, the tail sticking out of his mouth.

He glanced up when he saw his girlfriend and smiled, but it faltered seconds later when he saw that something was wrong. He stood up and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close to his chest. "I don't know what's wrong, but I'll do my best to fix it."

June wished Regulus hadn't immediately been nice to her. It would have been a lot easier to explode. She sagged against him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "My fucking father is what's wrong."

She frowned, pressing her face against Regulus's chest for a moment, then pulled back enough to look at him. "I thought he'd be in a good mood today because Narcissa just had her baby, so I tried talking to him about my future. We were meant to meet about it tomorrow anyway. And I told him what I wanted, but he doesn't care. He never listens. It started out with him telling me he was going to marry me off to Viktor Krum and wouldn't I like to be like Narcissa, throwing mindless parties? Instead of being an old spinster career woman. And of course he fucking won't acknowledge that there's a middle-ground. He doesn't want me to be like my mother, but he's doing exactly what her parents did." She let out a shakey breath. "And he doesn't approve of you. First he tried to convince me that you were after me for your own gains, which is fucking stupid. Like getting close to my father is good for anybody. Then he told me your father knocked up Narcissa and her daughter is your... half-sister I guess. And then we both got really mad and he pulled his wand on me and kicked me out of his office."

June looked up at Regulus. "I... sorry. If you didn't know. About Narcissa and your dad. It doesn't even make sense to me, because you told me about... you know, about your dad having a boyfriend, but I wasn't going to say anything to him. Just... fuck, I hate him sometimes."

Regulus arched a brow and looked back at June for a moment. "I'm sorry that your father was being a royal thunder-cunt. It makes me want to punch him in his handsome little face." He kissed her forehead and pulled back with a sigh.

"However, my father is gay." He told her and shook his head. "And he's been secretly dating a man for years. He's not fucking Narcissa. But, I know a few people who are. And one you wouldn't be very happy about."

"It makes me want to curse him or find some way to do what I want to do anyway. I'm not going to be some bitter, lonely woman, locked up in a big, empty house all the time. I refuse," June said firmly. "I'll... run away to America and join the Muggle circus as a fortune teller if I have to."

She frowned a little at that revelation. "A few people? Like who? My father isn't fucking her, is he? The baby's got black hair. He could be, if he wasn't completely wrapped around Uncle Abraxas's finger."

"The muggle circus? In America?" Regulus liked the sound of that. He could throw knives or something. He smiled to himself and then kissed her forehead. "I think that sounds like an amazing plan and you should take me with you."

"No. Not your father." Regulus pulled back a little and looked at her carefully. "Your brother."

Their plans to run away and join the circus were going to have to be put on hold for a moment. "Narcissa fucked my brother?" June made a disgusted face. "I don't even want to know how you know that. God. Merlin's supposed to marry her son."

June ran a hand through her hair. "So Merlin knocked up Narcissa and someone decided to blame it on your father. My dad's a twat who's going to marry me to whoever suits his interests the best and then not let me actually do anything with my life. I guess we should decide what the best way to get to America is and which circus we want to be part of. It would just... be really fucking nice if someone in my family could pretend for five minutes that they cared how I felt. It's my life."

"Neither one of us have lives." Merlin informed his sister as he found her in the courtyard, having went looking for her when he'd seen how upset his father had been when he'd come in for a lesson. He eyed Regulus carefully, reaching out to touch her arm. "What's wrong?"

"Besides your father being a prick?" Regulus asked, frowning at the other boy.

June turned to look at Merlin, eying him carefully. "If you're here you must have seen Dad," she said. "At least you got to have some say in who you're going to marry. Even if you did have sex with his mother."

She ran a hand through her hair, trying to calm herself down. "Dad wants me to marry Viktor Krum and spend the rest of my life throwing parties and having babies. Because I'm a girl. Because he doesn't seem to think I inherited anything but my hair colour from him. He pulled his wand on me today, hexed me when I thought about pulling mine to defend myself, and then ordered me to leave his office. I couldn't even work up the nerve to tell him to go fuck himself. I just told him I could use wandless magic too and slammed the door with magic behind me."

Merlin winced when she said that she'd slept with Narcissa. He wasn't going to dignify it with an answer. Instead, he shook his head and sighed, glancing at Regulus for a moment, to size him up.

"I won't let him marry you to Viktor Krum." Merlin promised her and he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her to his chest. "Do you hear me? I'll save you from this. Okay?"

"Yes, you're going to go have a conversation with Dad and then he's probably going to torture you for a few hours and then you might get your way." She gave in, grumbling and hugging him back. "And I'll still be a stupid fucking girl who needs saving like some awful character in a book."

June pulled back. "I work hard. I'm smart. I have ambition and talent and he thinks if he puts me in a nice enough box I'll forget all of that. Maybe his present to me on my seventeenth birthday will be a lobotomy so I turn nice and agreeable for him."

Regulus looked at the other boy and sighed. "Can't I just run off and elope her?"

June nodded. "Plus, I'm not sure that eloping would really solve the problem. Even if we got my mom really drunk and then dragged her somewhere to give me permission to get married. Although your father would probably be okay with it, since he's already written my father about us getting married."

She sighed. "The problem if that I'm a girl and my father has no respect for women. I think the person who came closest in his eyes was Narcissa, and now she's had this baby that Dad thinks belongs to Sirius Black, for some reason." June gave Merlin a pointed look. "Not that the truth would make Dad like her again. He only liked her because she takes care of kids and throws parties and generally acts like he thinks a woman should."

She looked up at her brother again. "Merlin, I don't like the idea of your daughter being used as a bargaining chip with dad. She's... my niece, I guess. I mean, Narcissa's raising her, so maybe she'll be less... whatever I am, but it's still a horrible thing to do to a baby. Trade her for me."

June still wasn't sure she liked this. Merlin should have feelings for his daughter, but she knew their father had fucked him up. "All right," she said. "But make sure she and the Minister's grandson know each other. She shouldn't have to marry a stranger."

She hugged Merlin for a long moment, closing her eyes. She was doing her best not to feel too relieved or too hopeful. Who knew what their father would decide to do. "Thank you."
