Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Being Tom Riddle's daughter frequently turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. For one thing, nobody had ever handed her a friendship like Merlin had been handed Draco's. She'd grown up with Merlin telling her that he and Draco didn't want to play with her and been too shy to ask Pansy if maybe she wanted to be friends, even though she knew Merlin wouldn't have minded that. At school, everyone acted afraid. Most Slytherin families tried really hard for boys anyway, and who was she supposed to be friends with, Astoria Greengrass?

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Her father respected intelligence and ambition. She was descended from Salazar Slytherin. She could sit down with her father and have a frank conversation about her future. The worst thing he could do was... Well, honestly she didn't want to think about the worst thing he could do because the worst seemed pretty darn worst to her. Ending up married to some dirty old man in Albania or Romania or wherever he was trying to strengthen his hold in Europe. June put on her best dutiful daughter face and knocked on the door to her father's office. Narcissa had had her baby. Everyone had to be in a good mood now, right?

Tom had been a little busy when he'd heard the knock on the door. The child that Narcissa Malfoy had given birth to certainly was not a Malfoy and didn't resemble much of the blacks either. However, there was a possibility the child belonged to Sirius Black. Which is what he was trying to figure out.

He grunted softly to himself and let out a sigh, waving a hand so the door would open. "June. We weren't scheduled to meet until tomorrow."

"Carpe Diem," June said, walking into the room. She took a seat on one of the chairs in front of Tom's desk. She should have brought her notes with her. "I just wanted to speak with you as soon as possible and I know everyone else is probably busy with the new baby."

She smiled at her father. "I know you want me to get married after Hogwarts, and I respect that, but I've been getting really good marks in my classes, especially Charms. I might be more useful doing research, maybe. Or even going into politics like Uncle Abraxas. I know Draco's going the political route, but since Merlin's following in your footsteps don't you think it would be useful to have a child in straight-politics as well? I could be like... an ambassador or something."

Not this. Tom looked at his daughter with a heavy sigh and shook his head. He shuffled some papers around on his desk and then eyed her seriously. There was no way she actually thought that he'd be okay with something like this.

"June." Tom shook his head again, to get his point across. "You are my daughter. Your blood is far to valuable to have you become a career woman and an old maid. I'm already having trouble finding a husband for you."

"I can have a career and children," June said. "There are woman who do that, Dad." Granted, they usually weren't pure-blood women, but so what? June refused to turn into her mother, bored and bitter and unfulfilled.

"I'm not saying I don't want to do everything you expect me to do. I just thought... I don't know. Everyone you expect doesn't have to be all I do, does it?" June studied him for a moment. "There's Regulus Black. We're seeing each other now anyway."

Tom gave his daughter a frown. "The Blacks are of good blood, but that Regulus boy is not right for you. I'm letting you have your fun with him while I find you a husband, but he will not be my first choice. He's not focused. And he's a Gryffindor."

He frowned. "If you can find a man I approve of, you may marry him. But, if you don't find one by your seventeenth birthday, I will marry you to Viktor Krum."

"Viktor Krum?" June repeated incredulously. "The Quidditch player?" How was that a better fit for her than Regulus? At least she knew Regulus, even if they'd only just started dating.

She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "What kind of person would you approve of?" she asked. "At least give me some guidelines."

"What is wrong with Viktor Krum? He's a large and strong young man with a career." Tom informed his daughter. "And his family has always fought for my cousin, even if a bit reluctantly."

He eyed his daughter for a moment and shook his head. "Someone with a strong head on their shoulders. Calm and reserved with a large ambition and a belief in our cause, June."

Large and strong. Like those were traits June was looking for in a husband. "Maybe Krum is nice, but I don't know him. Telling me he's large doesn't exactly inspire my faith in his ability to have a decent conversation."

She didn't exactly think someone calm and reserved would be any fun either. "I have ambition, Dad. And talent. I just want to do something with my life. I don't want to turn into Mum."

"You're nothing like your mother. She's weak and an alcoholic." Tom informed his daughter and shook his head. "You are much better than that, June. Being a wife doesn't limit you in the world. Your mother did absolutely nothing with her fame or money."

Tom shook his head and reached across the desk, touching her hand. "You could be like Narcissa Malfoy. You could throw large functions to raise money for charities. You could feed the poor. But, that doesn't mean you have to be hands on."

She could throw parties. June stared at her father for a long moment. "Do you really think that's the kind of life I want? To sit at home having babies and planning parties? Maybe Narcissa likes doing it, but I'm not like her. I'd rather be a spinster with a career."

She pulled her hand away from him. "I want to be hands on. I want to create great things. Like Rowena Ravenclaw or Helga Hufflepuff. They both managed to have children and do something with their lives. And that was centuries ago. I don't see you telling Merlin he has to worry more about kids and marriage than anything else. You're even letting him marry Draco."

Tom frowned at that. His daughter didn't know the sacrifices he'd made to get to where he was. Or the sacrifices her brother had made. Or what Merlin had been through to become the man he was becoming. He frowned at her and stood.

"Is that what you want?" Tom asked his daughter, arching a brow. "Do you want the same treatment as your brother?"

June hesitated. She knew some of what Merlin had been through and she wasn't sure she really wanted the same treatment as him, but she wanted the relative freedom he got. She wanted to be her own person.

"I want you to treat me like a person and not a convenient gift to be given to the most strategically important ally." She looked up at him. "Please, Dad."

"I treat you like a person. I treat you like you are my daughter and I'm trying to find the best way to support your future." Tom frowned at his daughter and shook his head. "Do you have any idea who you are? What people want to do to our family?"

He shook his head. "Do you have any idea what I've done to make sure this family succeeded. That the world would be better for us? You want to be treated with respect, and yet, you don't respect me. The things I've done for you."

"I know who I am. I know who you are. I know what people want to do to us," June said. "Why can't I try to do great things too? You can't really think the best way to support my future is to marry me to someone I don't even know."

She stood up too. "I know what you've done for me, Dad. I go to a great school because of you. I live better than most people because you worked hard for what we have. I'm in a better position that most of the world, but I want to do something with that. Something beside throw parties or raise children. Maybe that life is right for some people, but it's not right for me. I'm your daughter."

Tom reached into his desk and pulled out a letter he'd put in there days before. He frowned at her for a moment and then held it out to her, doing his best not to sneer. She was his daughter and in his own way, he loved her. Kind of.

"Your boyfriend wants to marry you." Tom informed her. "You barely know him and he's asked his father to bid for your hand."

"I know," June said, reaching out and taking the letter from her father. "We discussed it. Why do you think I mentioned him to you? We both have to marry and we like each other. He wouldn't stop me from doing whatever I wanted to do with my life."

She was doing her best not to cross her arms over her chest or stomp her foot or do anything else that would make her father angrier than he already was. She just wanted a real life. "So what? He's not exactly the sort of man you want for me, is he? He's not calm or level-headed, even if he is smart and from a good family." He wasn't boring.

"He's none of the things I want for you." Tom shook his head and frowned, looking back at June. "His mother and father were both Gryffindors. His father was nearly wiped from his own family tree for being far too rebellious and sympathetic towards Muggles."

He frowned. "I think he's using you." He told her. "For who you are. I don't think he cares about you personally. I think he cares about what you can give him>"

"Have you ever even talked to him?" June asked, frowning at her father. Regulus wasn't that kind of person. He was nice to her. He wasn't scared of her or her family. He was her friend as well as her boyfriend. "He's not like that. He's not that manipulative."

She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. "He's a Black. What would marrying me get him that he couldn't already get himself with a bit of extra work?"

"His father can't be trusted." Tom felt like he was about to explode in anger. He frowned at June and shook his head, then grabbed the picture of the baby that Abraxas had sent him. His newest grandchild of sorts.

"His father impregnated his own cousin." Tom informed her, showing her the picture of the baby. "This is Narcissa Malfoy's latest child."

June blinked down at the picture of the little girl, bundled up in pink blankets. The black hair and big, grey eyes certainly didn't look like they'd come from Augustus, but she wasn't sure she saw Regulus's father in their either. She glanced at the photo and then at her dad and then back at the picture.

"I wouldn't be marrying his father," she pointed out. "And the Blacks have been prone to marrying their cousins for generations. You probably know wizarding genealogy better than I do. If Abraxas is sending you photos of her, he can't be that upset by it."
