emma, wyatt, bau & co
With Liam away on vacation, Emma was the lead agent in charge. Liam was due back in the morning, well, not back to work but back home. When Brie had started to get direct threats, Emma thought it best to put her in protective custody. Mick insisted she be assigned with the other agents to keep an eye on the woman, and Emma had agreed to it. But now that Brie was under lock and key, the man stalking her and killing prostitutes in her name was getting angrier. He'd slipped up, finally. He'd left a print at the last scene, and he was in the system. They'd gone to his house to apprehend him, but he wasn't there. Instead, there were clues as to who he'd be after next, and a location. An abandoned warehouse. Emma and Wyatt were enroute to his apartment when Micah had called to tell them that Kyle Pratt wasn't there, and that he might be at the warehouse location. She and Wyatt were closer, so they went ahead, thinking a woman's life was in danger.

When they got there, Emma took the lead, her gun in hand. She could hear noises, though she wasn't sure what they were. The others would be there soon with backup, but for now she was focused on hopfully saving the woman she assumed Pratt had.

Two against one, right? Those were good odds and they weren't going to split up. They were following protocol, especially when a person's life was in danger. The sooner they got to her, the better.

Wyatt wasn't entirely comfortable with a gun, but he went practicing with Micah and he'd improved immensely. Following Emma's lead, Wyatt held his gun carefully with two hands and went inside.

Things were dark, of course. No sociopath could work in a well lit area, he supposed. Letting his eyes adjust to the low lighting, he strained his ears to try and hear where the noises were coming from. There was a sliver of light in the distance behind a door to what looked like it could be an office. "There," Wyatt said in a low tone, indicating that he thought the sounds were coming from that direction.

Emma's eyes narrowed in the dark and flickered to where Wyatt had indicated. She nodded her head a little bit and started towards the door quietly. Her heart was pounding, but she was focused. She knew how important everything they did was in times like this one. One wrong move, and everything could go very wrong.

She went to the door and waited until Wyatt was behind her, then she quietly pushed the door open since it was all ready open a crack. She didn't see anyone, but that was because no one was in the room. The shot that rang out was meant for Wyatt, but Pratt had miscalculated and it hit Emma in the back instead. The force of it sent her forward against the door, and it opened it up as she slid down to the floor, her gun scattering out of her hands.

Unable to keep from crying out with fear, Wyatt yelled Emma's name as he went to her side. As good of a memory and as sharp of a brain as he had, everything went blank. What was he going to do?

Help, he needed help first. Reaching for her, he pulled her farther into the room so that he could slam the door shut with his foot. That would buy him some time because he could tell the shot had come from the dark of the warehouse. He dug for his cell phone and called for an ambulance, indicating that an agent had been shot. Each second was vital now and while Wyatt always thought he was the egalitarian sort where one life was not more important than another life, he forgot all about the fact that they were looking to save another woman. At this point, he hadn't registered that it had all been a trap for them.

"Emma," he said firmly and rolled her over so that she was on her back. "They're on their way, okay? You're going to be fine." He was trying to keep her conscious but there was a lot of blood pooling beneath her and he could see the edges of it starting to spread ou from under her body.

It was obvious that she was struggling to stay concious, and she started to cough up a little bit of blood. She blinked rapidly, trying to focus on everything going on around them but it was hard. She was essentially drowning in her own blood. Her breathing was labored, and each breath she took was accompanied with a gurgling sound.

"He's... He's gonna come... through that door, be ready," she managed to gasp out. "You can do it."

Wyatt couldn't even think about the impending doom coming for them on the other side of that door. He scooped her up, angling her torso upright to buy her some time and let the fluid drain down. He felt like crying, but he hardly had time before the door started to shake. Wyatt's foot was propped up against it, trying to keep it closed.

Kyle slammed his shoulder against the door, but it wouldn't budge. He was angry and frantic and he aimed his gun to shoot through the wood. It burst through and hit Wyatt in the leg. He yelled in pain and clutched at Emma. The pain made his brain go foggy, but he knew he had to protect his teammate. Reaching for his gun, he tried to hold it steady as Kyle burst in. Wyatt fired in a moment of clarity and hit the man in the gut, toppling him over. But that wasn't enough to stop him. As soon as he hit the floor, Kyle kept going for his gun.

"Stop, or I'll shoot," Wyatt cried, trying to avoid killing the man. But when Kyle aimed at Emma, Wyatt didn't hesitate to finish him.

Emma was desperately trying to remain conscious. All of the color had drained from her face, and her breaths were labored. She could hear what was going on around her, but everything was steadily becoming black. She blinked rapidly and tried to hold onto Wyatt, though her grip was slack. She could see that Kyle was unmoving, and she tried her best to focus her attention on Wyatt.

"Good job, kiddo," she said, managing a smile through her pain and coughs of blood. She wasn't going to make it. She was fighting it tooth and nail, but she knew. She just wondered if Wyatt knew, too.

Even though Wyatt's mind had always been very scientific, logical, he refused to believe that Emma was going to die there in that warehouse. It was too surreal for him to even wrap his brain around.

He was trying not to think about the fact that he'd just killed someone. Good job? How could the two of them covered in blood be a good job. Wyatt clutched at Emma's hands, trying to make them have strength again because he could feel them loosening on him. "They're going to get here soon. Just--Emma? Emma, just hold on."

Each breath she took became more shallow than the last. She was looking at him, but her eyes were starting to droop and glaze over. Aside from the sound of his voice and her struggles to get more air into her lungs, the place was completely silent. Kyle was unmoving, a few feet away. She could hear sirens, finally, but they were so distant that she wasn't even sure if they were real. She opened her mouth to say something to Wyatt, but nothing came out, and she took her last breath before she went still.

The pain in Wyatt's leg was very far away. His adrenaline was pumping so hard that part of him didn't even realize that some of the blood was his own. The shot hadn't hit anything major, but he was going to need crutches for awhile. The loss of blood was starting to go to his head though and he wasn't really able to fully appreciate the fact that Emma had died in his arms. Maybe she had just passed out--maybe he was the one dying--maybe this was some nightmare.

Police entered the scene first and as soon as the immediate area was cleared, the EMTs rushed in to gather up both of the injured agents.

Micah and Beckett arrived on scene just as they were loading up. He could see that they had given up work on Emma, but it still didn't register that she was dead. As he saw Wyatt being loaded up, he quickly went over to him and insisted that he be able to ride along. The paramedics allowed it, and he reached out to grasp a hold of Wyatt's hand.

"Hey," he said softly, "You're gonna be fine," he added. Physically, anyway. Eventually. But mentally? Micah wasn't so sure.

They'd easily stabilized Wyatt, prevented him from going into shock and stemmed the flow of blood. The fact that Micah was there made it all more real and he frowned. "Hi," he said quietly. He certainly wasn't his talkative self.

Before they loaded him into the ambulance, he tried to see Emma, but he just got a glance before the doors shut. "I killed Pratt. My gun--I left my gun."

"Don't worry about it, Beckett's handling everything," Micah said softly, confident that the other man was doing his job and well. He didn't know what else to say. Now that everything was registering, he was beginning to realize that Emma was gone. Why else would the paramedics have stopped working on her? "What happened?" he asked, "Can you tell me? You don't have to. We can wait. It can wait."

"I killed--" he exhaled and felt like he was going to pass out.

"He's lost quite a bit of blood," one of the paramedics told Micah, trying to explain the young man's inability to form a truly coherent thought. "Anything he says might be a little muddled."

Wyatt could hear the EMT speaking but for some reason it didn't sound as if he was talking about him. So Wyatt carried on. "Emma was shot. Pratt shot her. Then--was there a girl? Did someone get the girl?"

"The police cleared the building, there was no girl, I'm thinking it might have been a setup," Micah said quietly as he let his fingers sweep through Wyatt's hair. There was blood in it, and it made Micah frown. "I think he was going to try and use one of us as a hostage to get to Brie," he added, "I don't - I'm not sure about Emma. I don't... It didn't look good, Wyatt, she didn't look good."

The slow realization that this had all been for nothing made Wyatt well up and he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to prevent himself from losing it. Deep down, he knew that Emma was gone. His stomach felt it, his heart felt it, but his brain hadn't caught up.

He put his hands over his face and tried to keep breathing, but it was hard. No words came to his mouth and finally he just let out a sob.

Micah's face twisted up in worry, and he leaned forward to wrap his arms around the younger man. He didn't know what to say, so he just held onto him. His own eyes were tearing up, and he wished that he could fix everything, but he knew that he couldn't.

The trip to the hospital felt like an eternity. Wyatt was hoping that they loaded him up with drugs to put him under for surgery. A brief spark of clarity granted him the realization that his leg was in bad shape. Jabs of pain had managed to press through the adrenaline and pain medications and he figured that the bullet was still in there.

They wheeled him into the emergency room and he wanted desperately for Micah to stay by his side, but that was an impossibility.

Micah frowned and gave Wyatt's hand a squeeze before he dipped his head down to brush a kiss to his lips. He wished he could follow, but they were all ready trying to usher him out of the way.

"See you soon," he said softly, then he finally let go.

For a moment, he stood in the hallway, hands on his hips. He swallowed hard, then turned to go to the waiting room. He was hoping Beckett would be arriving soon.

The acid in Beckett's stomach was churning, rising up his esophagus and making him feel like he was going to be sick. Emma was dead. She'd died before they'd even gotten her into the ambulance and the fact that they hadn't turned the lights or sirens on had really hit home as Beckett followed the vehicle to the hospital. Wyatt's ambulance had arrived at the hospital much faster than Emma's because he still had a chance.

When he found Micah in the waiting room, he could hardly look him in the eye. "How is he doing?" He wanted to talk about Wyatt first.

Micah was relieved to see Beckett, but he wasn't sure what the hell to say. They couldn't call Liam because he was all ready on a flight back. Even if he wasn't, he'd left his cell at home. They would have had to call the hotel. The idea that he'd come back from a vacation to this? It was awful.

"He's doing - he's okay, they're going to remove the bullet, lost a lot of blood," he said quietly. "He's upset. But, I think he's gonna be fine."

Ironically enough, Liam had come home a few days ago, though the time he'd taken off had allowed for a few days at home to relax after coming home from the trip. Liam knew himself well enough to know that even after a vacation he'd be tired. Relaxing could be hard work, especially for someone like Liam. Unfortunately, he'd had to go after Chancellor who had had a fight with Cooper and had been holed up in his old house for days and days. But to come back to a death--it would be almost unbearable.

Beckett sank down in one of the chairs. "Good. Good." He exhaled and rubbed his hand over his face. "Pratt is dead. Brie is safe. There will be an investigation, of course, but I'm sure Wyatt followed protocol. Everything will be okay." It was standard procedure to investigate a shooting as well as the death of an agent.

Micah wanted to ask about Emma, but he all ready knew the answer. He was new to the team, but being the newest member didn't make anything easier on him. It was a loss for all of them. Emma wasn't just an agent, she was a friend to all of them.

Sitting down with his elbows on his knees, Micah just stared at the floor. Thirty minutes had gone by, but it felt like hours. When Mick came in, now that Pratt was dead Brie was safe, she looked pale.

"Are they okay?" she asked, though by looks on the other two's faces she knew the answer. "Who?" she asked, her voice thick.

Beckett stood up when Mick walked in, it was polite habit. Reaching out, he took her hand and had her sit down. "Emma," he said simply, and the emotion in that word was enough to convey that she was gone.

"Wyatt was shot as well, the doctors are working on him now. He was hit in the leg, so he should pull through all right." Beckett looked down at his watch and then searched for a calendar. "What's the date. Montgomery should be home by now. We need to call him. I know it's still his vacation, but--" Of course he'd want to be notified of this.

Mick sat down, but everything felt as if it were going in slow motion. She felt sick to her stomach, and for a moment everything went blank. When it came to grief, Mick wasn't the best at dealing with it. In the mass of confusion, she heard that Wyatt would be all right. Thank God. But Emma was gone.

"I'll call him," Mick said flatly as she moved to get up, tugging her hand away from Beckett's. She needed to get out of the waiting room, she all ready felt much too suffocated.

Before either Micah or Beckett could say anything else, she turned to leave, heading down the hall to go out into the parking garage where she took her cell out of her pocket and dialed up Liam's number.

Part of Liam wanted to ignore the ringing of his phone. It would go to voicemail and the world wouldn't end. But he knew his team wouldn't call him with any trivial matter and that clenched his heart a little when he picked up the phone and saw that it was Mick. Couldn't it have been some telemarketer or something equally as ignorable?

In a worried tone, he answered. "What's up?" Because he knew something had to be up. The whole team had teased him about not picking up his cell phone during vacation, making it a point to tell him that he needed a good long break from the BAU, a break and a tan.
