Summary: Hermione's earning a bit of extra credit for Professor Slughorn and Ron comes along, but something unexpected nearly happens that causes them both to become extremely awkward with on another.

Hermione didn't really need the extra credit she was going for. She was already the top of her year, but when Professor Slughorn asked if she would collect one of the Potion ingredients from Greenhouse four, she couldn't tell him no. To further entice her (even after she agreed), he added on several points to her last Potions essay as a means of thanks. Originally she had planned to do it alone, knowing it wouldn't take her more than an hour - two tops, but as she passed through the common room, she had spotted Ron playing with his Wizard's Chess set by himself. She had invited him and though he was reluctant at first, she reminded him that he did owe her for helping him when his wrist was broken, and only then did he agree to help her.

They were to pick only the yellow petals found on within Greenhouse four and they only needed about two pounds worth of it. Explaining what they needed and how to gingerly pick them off while avoiding the thorns that surrounded the stalk, she pointed to a batch next to her before squatting down and getting to work.

Realisation dawned upon Hermione's face as Ron closed in the distance between the two of them. He was going to kiss her, she knew it. How long had she been waiting for that? She started to lean forward too, her eyes closing.

A mere centimeter away, she could still hardly believe it, and hoped he would finally close the distance fully, but they were interrupted. A group of girls passed by the greenhouse, laughing and talking animatedly. Moment ruined and surprised at possibly being caught, Hermione pulled away and looked towards the voices, blushing profusely.

Ron swore animatedly under his breath, wondering why on the earth the world seemed to hate him. The minute he worked up the courage to attempt to kiss Hermione was the minute they just had to get interupted. Honestly, what had he done to deserve that?

His hand dropped back down to his sides and his face went red, his ears, of course, turning even more red than they had been. He sprang up, needing to stand and stop being so close to her for the moment. He looked at the ground, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck and rocking back and forth on his heels.

"Er, right. So." He said, looking around and then finally at her. "You're okay then?"

Hermione bit into her lip when he jumped up, silently fearing the worse. It had finally nearly happened, but they were interrupted. Really, it was just their luck.

Sighing inaudibly, she nodded at his question. "Yes," she said softly at first and then cleared her throat. "Of course I am. I just - I just need to pull this out." And that's what she did. She gently pulled the stinger out of her hand and brought her finger up to her lip to suck on it. She couldn't look at him, not yet; her face was too red and she was scared to see the look on his face - the one that would say it was all a mistake.

Ron watched as she silently pulled hte thrown from her finger and then began sucking on it. Stay calm, Ron. This isn't supposed to be sexy. He could feel the blood rushing southward at the sight of her sucking her finger like that and so, to avoid any further embarrassment, he jumped to attention and was at her side again.

"It's nothing, really." He told her quickly, taking her finger in his hand and kissing it rather quickly, his blush increasing. "See? Good as new."

Hermione was completely oblivious to the inner workings of Ron's mind and didn't realise that what she was doing could bother him so easily. When he sat next to her again, she looked over at him, minutely surprised when he reached for her hand.

"What're you -" Her breath caught again and her eyes widened when he kissed her fingers. Blushing, she ducked her head and tried to hide behind her hair. "It feels better already," she said, not exactly how to take that.

Ron, seeing Hermione's eyes go a bit wide, sensed he had done something quite embarrassing and so, he began to back away from her slowly, as if to put some space between them and of course, being Ron, didn't see the bucket right behind him. He tripped right over it, falling backwards and landing on his butt.

"Sodding bucket!" He yelled as he hit the ground. But then, he looked up at Hermione, reaching back to rub his back and he smiled sheepishly at her, breaking out in a laugh.

She hadn't expected him to back away so suddenly, especially since she had been enjoying the attentions he had been giving her. She had rather hoped that he would try to kiss her again like he had done before. But, she was otherwise disappointed.

"Ron!" she exclaimed, finger forgotten as she moved forward to check if he was okay. "Are you all right? Did you hurt anything?" But upon seeing his face, she gave him a confused look before laughing softly. "You really are a bit clumsy sometimes, aren't you?"

"Sometimes?" He questioned, giving her a questioning look, a big smile still on his face. "Try all the time, Hermione. It's a wonder that I can still walk." He grinned broadly before standing again and brushing off his trousers. "Bloody bucket came out of nowhere." He said, knowing full well that it had been there all along.

Smiling sheepishly, he ran a hand through his hair and looked at the plants. "We done with this? I think there's been enough excitement."

"Don't be ridiculous, you're not that clumsy all the time." Only when he got flustered or remotely embarrassed, something she guessed he was at that moment over the two things that had happened. Well, one nearly happened and the other did. "And that bucket was right behind you, there's no way it could have simply jumped out and decided to play a practical joke by trying to trick you."

Looking down at their basket of petals, she used her wand to test the weight of it and nodded. "Pretty much, I'm going to collect a handful or two more just to make sure Professor Slughorn has enough," she said, giving him a blushing smile. They had definitely had enough excited so far that day. She wanted desperately to ask him about the near kiss, but couldn't bring herself to do it.
