OCTOBER 31, 1997
Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Hermione and Ron: a walk before the ball

On one hand, having Hermione there might make him slightly nervous and distracted during the match but on the other and bigger hand, he wanted her there, needed her there for support. It was just soothing, calming almost to know she was in the stands watching them play.

"Alright, then." He said, a bit if disapointment showing in his voice from her answer of not knowing if she'd come and maybe having to leave early. He didn't want to protest and maybe get into an argument with her... not tonight.

Looking around, Ron admired the decorations and tried to focus on the night at hand and what Harry had said to him numerous times. Should he make some sort of move? Try to kiss her or something? He knew he didn't have the guts for the kiss part but maybe something a bit more simple. Take a deep breath and at the same time avoiding her eyes, Ron reached out and took Hermione's hand, pretending to guide her around some prickly bushes but not letting go afterwards.

Hermione noticed the disappointment in his voice, but really, that had been all the consolation she could offer him for now. Depending on just how much work she had left to do and how long the match lasted would decide how long she could inevitably stay. She'd tried several times to bring her work with her, but the noise level wasn't very conductive to studying, so she had given that up finally.

Caught up in her own thoughts, Hermione was surprised when Ron reached down for her hand. She looked at him, then at their hands, and back up at him again. She knew, she had to have known that he had done it under the pretense of avoiding some prickly bushes, but she suspected his ulterior motive. Not that she was complaining, far from it actually, and so, as she bit into her lip as her cheeks turned red again and just let him hold her hand. It felt nice, though now she couldn't help but try and figure out just what it meant.

Ron reached up and scratched the back of his head with his free hand, noticing the looks Hermione was giving him and becoming slightly nervous from them. Did she suspect? Trying to make the red on his cheeks go away, Ron looked at his watch again and saw it was nearly nine.

"Want to head to the Great Hall then?" He asked, quietly, knowing that once they reached there they'd have to let go of their hands to put their masks on and not looking forward to that part, but looking forward to the rest of the evening. "It's almost nine."

Hermione definitely suspected, only she couldn't bring herself to ask just what he was doing or why he was doing it. She didn't want to ruin it, whatever it was that he was doing. They might have only ever held hands when they were running about during one of their missions or something like that, but never just because. She rather liked it.

Nodding at his question, she glanced over at his watch. "We don't want to be late," she said, though it wasn't required to show up on time, it was just good form in her opinion. Especially since she was Head Girl.
