OCTOBER 31, 1997
Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

"To be determined at a later date," Harry mused before cracking up into laughter. He gave Ginny a tight hug, laughing against her skin. "Well as a promise then? This is something that maybe you should be sure to take off when we are on the Quidditch pitch - look forward now, just for a moment Gin."

He reached into the pocket of his dress robes and pulled out a small jeweler's box, something he had Tonks pick up for him on Diagon Alley, since she was able to take his fumbling descriptions of what he wanted and make perfect sense of them - Kreacher hadn't done so well on that front. A woman knows these things, Tonks said. She was right, this was what I wanted.

Handling it delicately, Harry withdrew the fragile silver chain, a solitary, large diamond dangling from it. It had been charmed with starlight, so it radiated a small halo of light against his palm, and, swallowing nervously, he reached around her neck and after fumbling with the clasp, fastened it. "For you," he said simply. "From me. A promise."

Ginny gasped at the sight of the necklace, wrapping her fingers around it and turning back to give Harry a delighted smile. "Oh, Harry, it's gorgeous," she breathed, kissing him joyfully. She cupped his face in her hands. "It's a promise I am bloody well keeping you to, Mr. Potter. You are my Chosen One," she teased, kissing him again.

Harry rocked her a bit as they embraced, beaming wildly. "Come on," he urged, picking her up and getting to his feet. "Dance with me, Ginevra. You look so beautiful, I just want to dance with you," he said happily, taking her hands and starting the waltz that Neville and Linda had taught him, a bit slow and overly cautious, but smooth nonetheless.

Ginny's mouth dropped open in shock. First a necklace whose price probably cost more than her, then Harry...dancing? What next, Slytherin winning on Saturday and being gracious about it? Cats and dogs living together? Voldemort returning?

"You are a man of many secrets, Harry," she laughed, tipping back her head. She let him lead her for a few minutes, just wrapping herself in the moment. Finally, though, she pulled her hands away and wrapped them around his neck, pulling him in closer. "You better save all of the dances for me, buddy," she warned with a teasing grin. Because she never planned on letting go.

Okay, step step slide. Step step slide. Linda's smiling face telling me to step step - then she winced because I nearly killed her, but Neville's all encouraging so just - slide.

Wow. Those two taught me good. Not a single accident yet! I love you so much right now Neville. Though. Not saying it.

"All of them, angel," Harry promised with a smile, grateful to devolve into the glorified rocking that was this embrace of a dance. "All of the dances are for you." He wrapped his arms around her waist, and over her head, he could see Dumbledore's tomb, as if it were illuminated, like the diamond around Ginny's neck.

Looking at it, being here in Ginny's arms, the promise of seeing friends in a few moments: for a minute, Harry's heart felt full. For a moment - he was certain he could belong.
