Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Ron let out a breath of relief at her answer and then he broke out in a smile, wondering if others were going to think he was crazy for smiling in the middle of the dancefloor the way he was. He wished with all his might that she was having a better time at this ball than the last, it was the one thing he was hoping to hear.

"I'm glad." He said, just as softly, unconsciously stepping closer and then clasping his hands together behind the small of her back.

Having fun at one ball more than the other was completely irrelevant to Hermione. The two were completely different events, separated by several years, and were under different circumstances. But she didn't mention that to Ron and wouldn't if asked, though she wouldn't admit to having fun at one more than the other. She had enjoyed herself at the Yule Ball and was enjoying herself now, too.

When he stepped in closer, Hermione held her breath and bit lightly into her lower lip. Hesitating only briefly, she wrapped her arms around his neck properly, moving with him to the music.

Ron didn't know how long the song was that they were dancing to but he silently hoped it would be a long one. When would he ever get the chance to hold Hermione like this ever again without giving anything away or seeming like a pervert?

It was almost as if someone was reading his thoughts because no sooner did he think that, the song ended and changed to a fast one and Ron was jolted back to reality. He dropped his hands from Hermione's waist and awkwardly stepped back, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.

"Feel like a drink?" He asked, trying to stop from feeling nervous and stupid.

It was a bit awkward pulling away from Ron and noticing his reaction. Was he nervous or feeling awkward too? They had gotten lost in each other for several moments, wrapped up in only the music and themselves, that pulling away and having reality come crashing back down was slightly unnerving.

Reaching up and tucking a strand of hair that had fallen loose behind her ear, she nodded. "I would, yes," she said, not really know what to say afterwards. Did she thank him for dancing with her or continue on as if that was simply it and without any acknowledgment?
