Marigold was hard at work, just as always. But, Charlotte had made her promise she'd eat at least once a day while she was studying. The problem was that she didn't have time to eat. With the help of a time turner, she was taking four extra classes and rarely had enough time to even finish her essays for her regular classes. Let alone the extra ones she was taking.

So while she was working on an essay for Ancient Runes, she was trying to munch on some fruit for dinner. She rarely even registered when people were around her, let alone when they were looking at her. She scribbled more notes, popping a raspberry into her mouth and chewing slowly.

"You didn't give me a choice about the kiss," Howell pointed out. "I figured you'd like looking at quills. Seems like you'd go through them pretty quickly, with the amount of essays you have to write."

He smiled at her. "I like you," he said. "I want to get to know you better. I can't believe you're not in Ravenclaw."

Marigold frowned for a moment at what he'd said. Both parts of what he'd said. She ran a hand through her hair, pushing it off her shoulder and then shrugged, not sure how to reply to him without seeming rude.

"One, no. You do not like me because you know nothing about me other than the fact that I kissed you when I got angry." Marigold pointed out. "And two, you don't have to be in Ravenclaw just because you enjoy doing work. There are other things about me that don't make me a Ravenclaw."

Howell raised an eyebrow at Marigold when she snapped at him. "I can like you without knowing everything about you," he told her. "That's why I said I wanted to get to know you better." If that was her trying not to seem rude, he didn't want to know what rude was.

"Two, I assumed you did, and again, I want to get to know you so I can see those qualities." He looked at her for a moment. "Do boys not flirt with you often? That's a shame. You're gorgeous."

Was that what he was doing? Flirting? Marigold had always seen how her father flirted with her mother, so it didn't seem like Howell was flirting with her. It was more like he was pushing her into going on a date with him.

"Boys don't flirt with me. I keep to myself." Marigold admitted after a moment and then ran a hand through her hair. "When is the next Hogsmeade weekend? We have to make sure I don't have to study."

Was that a yes? It was a reluctant, annoyed yes if it was, but he'd take it. "This weekend," Howell said. "And before you say anything, if you're too busy we'll put it off until the next one when you're not."

He finished his pear and wiped his hands off. "I can't be blown off that easily, unfortunately."

Marigold was reluctant. Boys would get in the way of her plans and she knew how her mind worked. She knew that she thought about boys sometimes and had urges. She knew that if, given half the chance, she'd be exactly like her mother had been.

And that was the last thing in the world that she needed.

"Fine." Marigold held out her hand to shake on it. So that it was an official deal. "We'll go have tea or something."

"Great," Howell said, snorting. "I promise one date isn't going to kill you. You don't have to look so disappointed that you're going on one. I'm not that bad."

He reached out, touching her hand briefly. "We can talk about Ancient Runes or something."

"It's not that you're bad." Marigold knew she was being rude and now it was time to apologise. When he let go of her hand she pulled it back and slipped it back under the table, looking him over carefully.

"You're a very handsome boy. I should feel lucky that you'd even ask me on a date." Marigold smiled at him. "I just have these goals for myself. And rules to help me achieve said goals. Which includes no dating to distract me or I'll never become Minster of Magic."

Howell looked Marigold over for a moment, then shrugged. "I can respect your rules," he told her. "But I also think that sometimes rules need to be changed. Or at least bent a little. One date doesn't really count as dating anyway."

Marigold was a bit odd, but Howell was intrigued by it. She definitely wasn't afraid of being herself, which was a nice change.

Marigold nodded slowly. She didn't agree with him, but she'd let him have his way for now. There was no sense in arguing. She chewed at her bottom lip for a moment, then sighed and put down her quill.

"Tell me about yourself." Marigold looked back at him, then popped some fruit into her mouth. "What do you like? What are your goals and aspirations?"

"My goals and aspirations?" Howell smiled, quirking an eyebrow at Marigold. "Let's see. I play Quidditch for Ravenclaw, but I have no interest in going professional. My best subject is Charms."

He tapped a finger on the table for a moment, thinking. "I've always liked the idea of working in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes."

That was interesting enough. At least he'd thought about it, even if he wasn't completely sure. Or didnt seem to be sure, as it was. She tapped her fingers on the table for a moment and then smiled.

"I plan to work in the ministry once I've finished schooling. My father works for the ministry and my mother is an auror." She shrugged. "My plan is to start out in the Misuse of Magic office and work my way up into the Wizengamot before I run for Minister of Magic." She smiled at him. "If charms is your class, I'd think you'd be interested in the Committee of Experimental Charms."

"Not really," Howell said, shrugging. "Just because charms is my best class doesn't mean I have to work with charms. I'd rather work in Accidents and Catastrophes. More exciting."

He shrugged. "You sound like you've got everything figured out, though."

"I just thought that if you liked charms, is all." Marigold shrugged it off. As long as he wanted to work in the ministry, she could potentially see herself dating someone like him. As long as he understood her rules and respected her.

Marigold shrugged. "My mother likes to come home with gruesome details about crime scenes."

Howell laughed. "Sounds like fun," he said. "Neither of my parents really have exciting work stories. My father works in administration at St. Mungo's. My mother's a Muggle teacher. I went to Muggle school before I started Hogwarts. You're a pure-blood, right? Were you home schooled?"

"I a full blood." Marigold replied with a casual shrug. It wasn't something she strictly liked to talk about, but it wasn't as if she was completely ashamed of it. She ran a hand through her hair.

"I assumed most people knew about Macnairs and our heritage." Marigold told him. "We're descendant from trolls."

"Really?" Howell hadn't know that, and if someone had told him that he probably would have dismissed it as a stupid rumour. "I hadn't heard that before," he said. "I think if someone had mentioned it to me I would have put it off as just a rumour. I didn't even know human/troll cross-breeding was possible."

"It's not terribly different from giants and humans breeding. And that's apparent in many different places." Marigold pointed out as she looked back at him. She tilted her head and looked at him. "Do you think I look like a troll?"
