Marigold was hard at work, just as always. But, Charlotte had made her promise she'd eat at least once a day while she was studying. The problem was that she didn't have time to eat. With the help of a time turner, she was taking four extra classes and rarely had enough time to even finish her essays for her regular classes. Let alone the extra ones she was taking.

So while she was working on an essay for Ancient Runes, she was trying to munch on some fruit for dinner. She rarely even registered when people were around her, let alone when they were looking at her. She scribbled more notes, popping a raspberry into her mouth and chewing slowly.

Howell had been thinking about the girl who has kissed him off and on since the kiss happened. She'd been cute and seemed nice, but he hadn't really seen her around. Marigold Macnair. It was only by chance that he noticed her at dinner, eating a bowl of fruit.

He weighed his options, then walked over to the girl, taking a seat across from her and reaching for a pear from the comunal fruit bowl. "Working on Ancient Runes?"

Marigold was more interested in what she was writing, rather than the boy who had sat in front of her. She barely even looked up when someone said something to her, popping another berry into her mouth. After a moment, she glanced up at the boy, her cheeks going red.

Why was he sitting there? Why was he talking to her? Had it been because of the kiss? "Yes." She nodded a bit. "It's due tomorrow."

"I know," Howell said, smiling a little. "I finished mine last night." He took a bite of his pear, looking her over carefully. "You know, I've been asking around about you. Since you kiss-raped me. You're in a lot of classes."

He raised an eyebrow. "Some of them are at the same time. How do you manage that?"

Marigold glanced up when he asked her the question and shook her head. She had to lie about it, but it wasn't the worst thing she could do. She simply shrugged her shoulders and wrote another bit of her essay.

"I have worked out a plan with the professors. As long as I keep up and write my essays I'm fine." Marigold would ignore the bit about kissing. "Why were you looking for me?"

"The rape-kiss," Howell said. "I've been thinking about it. I think you owe me for it." He wasn't sure he bought her story about the essays, but he'd let it go. It wasn't like they knew each other well.

"When you're not killing yourself with essays, we're going to go to Hogsmede. It'll be fun." He took another bite of the pear. "We can get something to eat and then look at quills or something."

That made Marigold pause and look up from her work. Was he demanding that she go on a date with him? That wasn't very nice. Girls shouldn't be forced into dates. She arched an eyebrow at him.

"Perhaps if you weren't so demanding and were giving me a choice in whether I go on a date with you or not, I would be better persuaded." Marigold informed him. "As it is, however, I'm far too busy to go on a date. Especially one that involves looking at Quills."

"You didn't give me a choice about the kiss," Howell pointed out. "I figured you'd like looking at quills. Seems like you'd go through them pretty quickly, with the amount of essays you have to write."

He smiled at her. "I like you," he said. "I want to get to know you better. I can't believe you're not in Ravenclaw."

Marigold frowned for a moment at what he'd said. Both parts of what he'd said. She ran a hand through her hair, pushing it off her shoulder and then shrugged, not sure how to reply to him without seeming rude.

"One, no. You do not like me because you know nothing about me other than the fact that I kissed you when I got angry." Marigold pointed out. "And two, you don't have to be in Ravenclaw just because you enjoy doing work. There are other things about me that don't make me a Ravenclaw."

Howell raised an eyebrow at Marigold when she snapped at him. "I can like you without knowing everything about you," he told her. "That's why I said I wanted to get to know you better." If that was her trying not to seem rude, he didn't want to know what rude was.

"Two, I assumed you did, and again, I want to get to know you so I can see those qualities." He looked at her for a moment. "Do boys not flirt with you often? That's a shame. You're gorgeous."

Was that what he was doing? Flirting? Marigold had always seen how her father flirted with her mother, so it didn't seem like Howell was flirting with her. It was more like he was pushing her into going on a date with him.

"Boys don't flirt with me. I keep to myself." Marigold admitted after a moment and then ran a hand through her hair. "When is the next Hogsmeade weekend? We have to make sure I don't have to study."

Was that a yes? It was a reluctant, annoyed yes if it was, but he'd take it. "This weekend," Howell said. "And before you say anything, if you're too busy we'll put it off until the next one when you're not."

He finished his pear and wiped his hands off. "I can't be blown off that easily, unfortunately."

Marigold was reluctant. Boys would get in the way of her plans and she knew how her mind worked. She knew that she thought about boys sometimes and had urges. She knew that if, given half the chance, she'd be exactly like her mother had been.

And that was the last thing in the world that she needed.

"Fine." Marigold held out her hand to shake on it. So that it was an official deal. "We'll go have tea or something."

"Great," Howell said, snorting. "I promise one date isn't going to kill you. You don't have to look so disappointed that you're going on one. I'm not that bad."

He reached out, touching her hand briefly. "We can talk about Ancient Runes or something."

"It's not that you're bad." Marigold knew she was being rude and now it was time to apologise. When he let go of her hand she pulled it back and slipped it back under the table, looking him over carefully.

"You're a very handsome boy. I should feel lucky that you'd even ask me on a date." Marigold smiled at him. "I just have these goals for myself. And rules to help me achieve said goals. Which includes no dating to distract me or I'll never become Minster of Magic."

Howell looked Marigold over for a moment, then shrugged. "I can respect your rules," he told her. "But I also think that sometimes rules need to be changed. Or at least bent a little. One date doesn't really count as dating anyway."

Marigold was a bit odd, but Howell was intrigued by it. She definitely wasn't afraid of being herself, which was a nice change.

Marigold nodded slowly. She didn't agree with him, but she'd let him have his way for now. There was no sense in arguing. She chewed at her bottom lip for a moment, then sighed and put down her quill.

"Tell me about yourself." Marigold looked back at him, then popped some fruit into her mouth. "What do you like? What are your goals and aspirations?"

"My goals and aspirations?" Howell smiled, quirking an eyebrow at Marigold. "Let's see. I play Quidditch for Ravenclaw, but I have no interest in going professional. My best subject is Charms."

He tapped a finger on the table for a moment, thinking. "I've always liked the idea of working in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes."

That was interesting enough. At least he'd thought about it, even if he wasn't completely sure. Or didnt seem to be sure, as it was. She tapped her fingers on the table for a moment and then smiled.

"I plan to work in the ministry once I've finished schooling. My father works for the ministry and my mother is an auror." She shrugged. "My plan is to start out in the Misuse of Magic office and work my way up into the Wizengamot before I run for Minister of Magic." She smiled at him. "If charms is your class, I'd think you'd be interested in the Committee of Experimental Charms."

"Not really," Howell said, shrugging. "Just because charms is my best class doesn't mean I have to work with charms. I'd rather work in Accidents and Catastrophes. More exciting."

He shrugged. "You sound like you've got everything figured out, though."

"I just thought that if you liked charms, is all." Marigold shrugged it off. As long as he wanted to work in the ministry, she could potentially see herself dating someone like him. As long as he understood her rules and respected her.

Marigold shrugged. "My mother likes to come home with gruesome details about crime scenes."

Howell laughed. "Sounds like fun," he said. "Neither of my parents really have exciting work stories. My father works in administration at St. Mungo's. My mother's a Muggle teacher. I went to Muggle school before I started Hogwarts. You're a pure-blood, right? Were you home schooled?"

"I a full blood." Marigold replied with a casual shrug. It wasn't something she strictly liked to talk about, but it wasn't as if she was completely ashamed of it. She ran a hand through her hair.

"I assumed most people knew about Macnairs and our heritage." Marigold told him. "We're descendant from trolls."

"Really?" Howell hadn't know that, and if someone had told him that he probably would have dismissed it as a stupid rumour. "I hadn't heard that before," he said. "I think if someone had mentioned it to me I would have put it off as just a rumour. I didn't even know human/troll cross-breeding was possible."

"It's not terribly different from giants and humans breeding. And that's apparent in many different places." Marigold pointed out as she looked back at him. She tilted her head and looked at him. "Do you think I look like a troll?"

"No," Howell said, laughing. "That's an awful question to ask someone. Would anyone ever say yes?" He shrugged. "You're very pretty. I've never seen a troll in real life, but in books they're usually ugly and huge. You're tall for a girl, but I wouldn't say there's anything particular troll-like about that. Some people are tall. It does explain your cousins, though."

Marigold nodded at that. "You should see my grandfather." She told him and then leaned against the table. "I'm abnormally strong as well. Not as strong as the boys, but I can bench press quite a bit. And I never get fat no matter what I eat."

Howell glanced at the bowl of fruit Marigold was eating. "If that's indicitive of your usual diet, that doesn't seem like something you'd need to be worried about anyway," he pointed out. "I'm a vegetarian. I hope you don't mind."

Marigold stared at Howell for a moment, unsure of what to say to him. Was he for real? "I'm a vegetarian too." She told him, unable to stop herself from smiling. "I guess we won't have to worry about what we eat on our date."

That made Marigold smile. Even if she didn't want to smile at him, she was. He was a nice boy. Handsome, vegetarian, aspired to work in the ministry. He wasn't a bad catch. "I can imagine. My cousins eat nothing but dead animal. You should see how much Xavier and Brutus put away."

Howell wrinkled his nose at the thought. "I couldn't do that," he said. "Maybe you have to when you're the big and your troll blood is strong in your veins. Brutus is vicious on the field. Playing against Slytherin always results in someone getting injured."

"I fly sometimes." Marigold nodded and smiled. "I mean, yeah. I think we all fly. I'm actually pretty good at it." She shrugged a bit, feeling smug. "I wasn't very good at it at first. I fell of my broom and broke my leg the first time I got on one."

Marigold laughed at that a bit and shook her head. "Bludgers are the worst, aren't they? I play Quidditch at home with my cousins sometimes during the summer. I got hit in the face with one once. Had to go to St. Mungos for two weeks. My mum was so proud of me."

Howell snorted. "My mother would be furious with whoever hit me," he said. "She doesn't get Quidditch at all. She thinks it's a death sentence. My dad and I kind of sneak around her disapproval. I know your cousins, though. I'm not surprised you spent that long in the hospital."

Howell wanted to say something about Marigold feeding him, but drawing attention to it seemed like it might make it go away. "Brutus reads a lot of comic books." Marigold pointed out with a shrug. "He's kind of this really huge nerd and doesn't want people to know about it. Most Macnair's have reputations to protect or something. It's stupid."

"Really?" Howell laughed a little at the idea of Brutus Macnair being a huge nerd. Flirting with Marigold apparently had all sorts of perks. He picked up a berry from her bowl and held it out to her. "That is stupid, but I guess people would be less afraid of him if he was honest about himself, which he probably doesn't want."

Maybe he'd pressed his luck mentioning how well this was going. Howell smiled at Marigold and stood up. "You're right," he said. "I should go see my friends anyway. I'll see you this weekend. Ten, at the front doors?" He leaned down, kissing her cheek. "I'm looking forward to it."
