Cepheus was always so miserable when he was bored. He'd read through all his comic books and he'd played through a few games. And then he'd listened to all his Queen and Adam Lambert albus. He really needed something to do. He grumbled and rolled around on his bed for a moment, then pushed himself up and walked into his brother's room.

"We need to find something to do." He informed his brother. "Or I'm literally going to die of boredom. And that's a shitty way to go."

"A very long time, I think," Lucius said. "Your mother was still pregnant with the two of you, the last I recall. And Narcissa had that Weasley hanging around, shutting things up with Draco."

"Grandma?" Scorpius frowned a little. She almost never talked about Lucius. "Did you two get along? She doesn't... talk about you much. No one does."

"We had an arranged marriage," Lucius said. "Have the two of you got fiancees yet?"

"No. And I don't plan to find one either." Cepheus shook his head and looked back at the portrait. "I mean, that's not something that is required of us. Our Mum says it's shit to do that to your kid."

"It's tradition," Lucius said, frowning. He looked at Scorpius. "You don't have a fiancee either? How does your father expect to continue the Malfoy name and make sure your children have good breeding?"

"I don't think he cares," Scorpius said. "Not about our kids being pure-bloods, at least. I think he's hoping we have kids." He shrugged. "My friend Victoire's convinced we're going to get married one day and she'll have my babies, but I don't want to have to look after all the Malfoy stuff. I just want to be a curse-breaker."

"Well. Victoire does have blonde hair and blue eyes. She may as well be a Malfoy." Cepheus pointed out as he looked back at his brother. "You could always marry her. That way I don't get stuck doing all the Malfoy things."

"Victoire?" Lucius repeated, hopefully. She sounded like the right sort of girl. And Scorpius's urge to run away and break curses would pass. It was youthful rebellion. "She sounds like a nice girl."

"Honestly, I think she just stays close to me hoping Teddy will leave her alone," Scorpius said, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Teddy is a boy who fancies her." He looked at Cepheus. "I'm not getting stuck with all of it. You'll have to do something."

"I'll do as I please. Perhaps I'll be an executioner or something. Like Grandpa Walden." Cepheus informed Scorpius and then shook his head. He glanced at the portrait. "So you never answered my question. Why doesn't my mother like you?"

Lucius had been hoping he'd distracted them enough to skip the question. He supposed he should be glad his son wasn't an idiot. He looked at the boy for a moment, debating his answer. "I don't know," he said. "I always treated her very well. I loved your mother. I took better care of her than her parents did."

Scorpius frowned. "Are you sure?" he asked. "She doesn't talk about you... at all. Nobody does. Something must have happened to make them shut all this up."

"I have no idea what it was," Lucius said, looking between the two of them. "It's a shame. I would have liked the chance to help you grow up."

"We're almost grown now." Cepheus pointed out and then leaned back against the desk. He looked at the portrait, then back at his brother. "Fuck. You two look a lot alike. You're such a Malfoy."

"I am not," Scorpius said. He studied Lucius's portrait for a long moment. Cepheus had a point, though. He did look a lot like his grandfather. "I guess you got Mum's genes and I got Dad's."

Lucius smiled. Scorpius didn't know how right he was. "Your mother doesn't talk about me at all? Has she said anything to do the two of you?"

"No. She actually gets really mad when we mention you." Cepheus pointed out as he looked up at the portrait. "I figured you were just a bad inlaw or something. One time we asked about you and she brow into tears."

"I have no idea why she would," Lucius said, waving a hand to dismiss the discussion. "Let's focus more on the two of you. I want to hear about what you're up to. How are you doing in school? Both Slytherins?"

Scorpius laughed softly. "No," he said. "I am. Cepheus ended up in Gryffindor, somehow."

"We're complete opposites. That's how." Cepheus informed his brother and shrugged. "The hat had a hard choice with me. It kept saying it wanted to put me in Slytherin, but that my heart was too brave or something. I don't remember."

Lucius winced hearing his son was in Gryffindor. At least one of them was in the proper house. He wasn't sure how he felt about the name Scorpius, but it was becoming increasingly obvious to him that Scorpius was the best choice for his heir. He had a girl who wanted to be his wife. He was a Slytherin. Pansy didn't like him as much as Cepheus. Scorpius also looked the most like him. "That's... a shame," he told Cepheus. "The influence of Macnairs and Weasleys in the house, I suppose."

Scorpius snorted. If Lucius had been alive, he would have found things like that quite rude, but coming from a painting them were kind of funny. "Macnairs and Weasleys aren't so bad."

Cepheus didn't take too kindly to that. "I'm not sorry that I'm a Gryffindor. It's not like you even matter. You're just a painting of someone I don't know and don't care about. No wonder Mum doesn't like you." He frowned at Scorpius. "Let's go."
