The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

And --there-- it was. Derek stepped back from her quickly, even has she pushed away, and watched her very intently. She was fuming--he literally thought he could see smoke coming out of her ears, and a very small, yet infinitely wiser and sensible part of him said that he'd pushed her way too far, he wouldn't be returning home with all his limbs, she'd kill him, etc. etc.

But Derek Dobbs was a brash sort of man, and with a mask and a billowing cape, he was apparently much more capable of going way too far.

"So," he said quietly, arms crossed, "who did I remind you of, just then? When you were being considerably less explosive and could stand to touch me, you knew you knew me. So, who was it?"

Meredith's eyebrows shot up at his question. What kind of a thing was that to ask? She crossed her arms in front of her chest, apparently completely oblivious to the fact that they were having this conversation halted in the middle of a busy dance floor, and regarded him for a long moment before replying--trying to figure out if she should even reply at all, actually.

"What does it matter to you?" she finally returned. "You didn't remind me of anyone in particular, I just recognized you. Although maybe I couldn't place your identity because you were acting like a human being for once---which is all thrown out the bloody window now, I see." Meredith gestured to him in general, then turned on her heel to stalk off the way they'd come.

"Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go enjoy the company of the empty spaces on other side of the hall."

His jaw tightened as he saw her whirl around. Oh, fine, when things got too confrontational, or he managed to hit some sort of nerve with her, her solution was to walk away? That was certainly a way to resolve things.

"You can stalk off all you want," Derek called coolly to her retreating figure. "But I know you feel a lot differently towards me than you want me to think. So there's really no use fronting like this, because I do know."

He flexed his hands, balling them up into fists, his eyebrow arched in anger and frustration. Derek honestly had half a mind to go after her, but imagined that wouldn't be helping his case any. This was--ridiculous.

No.

This was bloody ridiculous. He shook his head, trying to figure out where he'd find Dorcas or someone else to talk him out of this mood. There was a ball going on, after all.

Well that certainly stopped her in her tracks. Derek Dobbs seemed to have a way of being able to do that to her--or maybe Meredith was just really bad at walking away when provoked. Either way, she was facing him again in a second, fists clenched at her sides and not even understanding why she was getting this angry at the words coming out of his mouth. It wasn't like they were true anyway.

"Oh? You know, do you?" she returned. "Then how did you come to that conclusion, may I ask? What in 'I hate you, Derek, don't speak to me ever again' was unclear? Do you need me to go over it with you again to get it straight in your head, or maybe just whack you over the head to get my point across?"

"Look, I don't know what grievous crime you think I've committed against you that has you absolutely crazy," Derek snapped, his hand on her shoulder, "but I didn't do anything. And I think I made it pretty clear back there that I act like a decent human being-- which you seemed to be going along with, until you were absolutely sure it was me."

He drew his hand back and crossed his arms, stepping back. "So, let's resolve something, my Meredith. What is it about me that you can't stand?"

Meredith immediately shrugged his hand off of her shoulder and rolled her eyes. "Don't play like you're some sweet and innocent little boy who's being all wrongly accused," she said with a scoff. "You've antagonized me from the moment we met, and you've only gotten worse since then. You say things just to annoy me, you spit out that 'my Meredith' line every other sentence no matter how many times I tell you not to, and, oh, let's see---have you already forgotten the last thing you pulled in my journals?"

It was like everything had boiled up inside of her and was spilling out all at once in this moment. She had so much to say and simply couldn't get her mouth to stop moving until it was all out of her system.

"You don't do that--friends don't do that--friends being what I thought we were, and---you know, a little focus on someone or something that isn't yourself would be nice every once in a while! But see, that's why we can't be friends, because you're always tugging at my pigtails like some little kid on a school playground, and I'm tired of it!

"All you seem to exist to do is say stupid shit to annoy me, pull a random 180 and act all nice and cute for five seconds, and then go back to pissing me off again, which only leaves me more annoyed than before. That is why I can't stand to be around you, Derek, and I swear to Merlin that if you so much as think one more syllable about how I'm nuts for wanting to smack you ninety-five percent of the time, I may really murder you right now."

She drew in a deep breath, and realized that she had said all of that very quickly, very loudly, and with very little oxygen. But ARGH!

A look of skepticism crossed Derek's face. "You despise and want to slap me halfway to next Wednesday because I pull your braids?"

Was that really it? Was the whole reason their conversations were usually terminated (rather than simply "ended") because she was annoyed that he seemed to be acting like a child?

That was... a relief? No. Not even close. Puzzling? Yes. Yes, it was.

"Then walk away," he said, with a little helpless shrug. "If you can't stand me, and if I antagonize you so badly, then just... walk away."

Well, really, what else could he do? He wasn't conscious enough of the problem (him, apparently) to prevent it from surfacing, she wasn't willing to give him an inch that didn't result in physical violence, so... what, in terms of conflict-resolution, could he do?

She let out a little yell of frustration, and ran her hands back through her hair, pulling at the blonde locks a little along the way. He was so---so----had he not been listening to anything that she'd just said? Did he ever listen?

No. The answer was no, he didn't.

That was it. She didn't have the time or patience to deal with this anymore. Derek Dobbs was obviously beyond the point of talking to.

Meredith's hands dropped back to her sides and she sighed. "You know what? You're right. I'm walking away," she said. "I'm going to go find my boyfriend and hope that he can help salvage the night that you just successfully ruined." She turned over her shoulder for one final glare before leaving the dance floor. "Have a fabulous night, Dobbs."
