The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Gavin had never been so proud of being Head Boy until now. Well, the late night patrolling (which he actually enjoyed when he didn't have any homework due the next day) and the assigning detentions were fun and all, but seeing the progress and plotting and hard work set in motion was the best part of all, in his opinion. Meredith had been a fun date, and they had been jiving really well for the past hour, well, until they lost each other. Gavin wasn't entirely sure how that happened, he had paused to say hi to a friend, or did she?

He pushed his mask a bit higher up the bridge of his nose - it kept slipping - and leaned against the punch table to try to search for Meredith. It was kind of vain, however, what with the all the masked people. His eyes stopped on a lone figure about a few yards away from him. Despite the mask, and the dress (WOW!), he recognize that girl anywhere. He started eagerly towards her, then stopped.

Things hadn't really been going smoothly between them, but then again, they were never smooth. He had always enjoyed talking and teasing Kobe, and she had always responded in kind with some sort of abuse, but never anything serious - until she bloody punched him! In the throat! That hurt! But then again... it was Halloween night, and a ball. And his mask! That ought to alleviate the pain of talking face-to-face, right? So to speak.

He strode over again, a new spring in his step. "You're not bored, are you? I hear this ball is really hopping." Oops, he had meant to make his voice all low and well, undetectable, but oh well. Maybe subconsciously, he wanted her to recognize who he was, after all.

Gavin really didn't know when to stop, did he? Kobe was able to tell who was behind that mask the moment he stepped near her, and she smirked at his attempt to change his voice, but--she knew that voice. She'd been listening to it since their first year, and she'd basically had it memorized in her head. It gave her a natural reaction now, to smirk or grimace or walk away.

She was about ready to tell him off when she realized that he hadn't exactly mentioned that he knew who she was. Kobe flushed a bit at the thought of Gavin not recognizing her, because clearly she was in a dress that---she would not normally wear. And showed off assets that she'd...rather forget she had.

"Not, not bored," her voice going a little higher than usual, straightening up to...stand, straight. Kobe knew that if she was going to bother wearing this dress, she was going to wear it right; even if no one knew it was her that was doing the wearing. "I just don't have a date."

All right--she'd managed to make it sound like it didn't bug her, at all. That was a good start.
