Donovan! BEHIND BARS
Danielle would not refer to Donovan as a--as a prisoner because her boyfriend would be out of there as soon as humanely possible! Donovan was not a death eater, he did not participate in those terrible, horrible---some of his best friends were halfbloods and muggleborns, he---she was a halfblood, so---it didn't make any sense, why would they think?

In her very logical thought process, her mind concluded that Augustus must have decided to drag his brother down with him. There was no way that Donovan could honestly be linked to any of the atrocities that a death eater might commit, but---Danielle did not know for a fact that her boyfriend's older brother was a death eater, but he'd always said the most horrible of things to her under his breath, he'd always given her these terrible chills. It was--it was not hard to believe that Augustus was a death eater.

But not Donovan, not her Donovan.

The hitwizard opened the gate and Danielle stood stiffly in the entry way as she waited for him to give her permission to enter. She'd been in these holding cells before, to help injured prisoners. It was how she'd gotten through here so quickly; she'd raced to the ministry and offered up her services as the healer who would give the two latest prisoners a physical exam. Unless they realized who she was before she could get into the cell, Danielle would have a much closer visit with Donovan than would have been otherwise allowed.

"Rookwood, get up," said the hitwizard as he removed some of the magical bars to let Danielle through, "Sit up for the healer."

He hadn’t even seen this coming.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true, now was it? The more he went through the events of the last couple of years, the more it made sense that now, after all this time, he was being accused of the things he was being held in that cell for. Still, he had always trusted that if he kept his mouth shut, if he just stayed the fuck out of it, that he wouldn’t be caught up in his brother’s personal shit storm. He had been his older brother’s lawyer on countless occasions – had helped him get out of some seriously dirty shit, but had never discussed the cases with anyone but him.

Augustus had told him things that he never wanted to hear from his own blood – admissions of being part of his army; tales about all the things he had done, always told with some sense of self satisfaction and maybe even a little amusement at times. It made his stomach churn, but as Donovan always had, he bit his tongue and didn’t flinch or turn away. He just listened.

He listened but didn’t do a fucking thing about it. He hadn’t done anything because no matter how horrible the things he had done were, he was still family - he was his own flesh and blood, and coming from the type of family Donovan had come from, that connection was stronger than any other. That sense of loyalty, that sense of dedication.

He had kept his brother and his cronies away from others he cared about for so many years – he knew the only reason Jonas or Danielle had escaped unscathed was because Augustus felt the same way about family as his younger sibling. Donovan knew that the only reason he had been able to save Danni that night at Mungo’s, the night they had kissed again for the first time after 5 years, was because Augustus had given him a heads up about where the Dark Lord’s army was going to attack next.

Now, he was being accused of being a part of it all. He had been taken from his home, from Danielle’s arms, and tossed into that cell like a criminal. The longer he sat on the cot in the corner, his head in his hands, the longer he felt like a criminal. His silence had caused so many others so much pain…but he couldn’t just throw his brother to the wolves, like he was nothing.

The mention of his name made his fingers curl into his hair, eyes squeezing tighter together as he let out a long breath. He would sit up, but his line of vision didn’t travel over to Danielle until she was already passed the guard. His heart leaped into his throat at the sight of her, and he swallowed roughly as he watched her approach. There was nothing said, not while the guard was still standing there, but he would eventually rise to his feet once he had turned away to give the doctor relative privacy with ‘the prisoner’.

“Danni…” He looked away from her, over to the guard, hoping he hadn’t heard the whispered sound of her name pass through his lips. She would surely be told to leave, if they knew she had a relationship with Rookwood. He looked back to her, keeping his voice quiet as his fingers twitched at his sides. “…you shouldn’t be here.”

He spoke out of worry, not because he didn’t want her to be there. God, she was like a beam of light in that place – she was beautiful, and warm, and he wanted to hold her – knowing he couldn’t in that moment was torture.

"Please lift your arms out to the side."

It had taken a lot of strength to keep her voice from shaking. Danielle pulled out her wand to start what would look like a regular physical exam. Her mind had just been focused on seeing Donovan, not what she'd actually have to do, not all the trouble she could get into if they found out who she was. She'd have to think about that later, when she went home and realized that Donovan wouldn't be coming into bed that night, that he might not be home for an undetermined amount of nights. How she was going to handle this, knowing that she could do nothing more than think about him, than pray for him like Jonas always said she should---

She watched the hitwizard out of the corner of her eye slowly make his way down the other cells. As soon as he was out of her sight she let her shoulders sag and her stern, professional expression disappeared and she looked completely lost and heartbroken.

"Donovan--" Her arms flung themselves around his neck, pulling him so tightly to her that she was sure she wouldn't be able to breathe. "What are we going to do, tell me what to do."

He had to have a plan, he must have a plan. In all the years she'd known this man, there had never been a situation Donovan could not get out of, there was not a problem he could not talk his way out of. Donovan must know what was going to happen, he was probably ready to laugh at how worried she was. Danielle kissed his neck, taking in his scent. Oh, how could she go home tonight without him? Every fiber of her being wanted to make a run for it. Run away, she wanted to run away.

Donovan hesitated, but eventually he did as was instructed of him – he knew he had to play the part, just as she did, but his eyes remained locked on hers until he saw movement out of his peripheral vision, the guard stepping away from the cell. He only caught glimpse of that heartbreaking expression on her face before she was speaking his name, her arms pulling him close as his own arms went around her, holding her against him as he buried his face in her hair, his eyes closed tight as he breathed in the scent of her. She was so small, and warm, and it made his chest hurt thinking that he would be in this cold, dark cell without her until his trial was over.

Her next question slash statement made his stomach drop, pulling her in with his arms.

“…I’m still trying to figure that out.”

The admission was quiet, but honest. He knew they only had a short amount of time before the guard came back, and this was the only motivation he had to pull back just the slightest bit from her, his hands resting on her arms as he looked at her. He stalled, swallowing before he spoke – his voice barely above a whisper.

“They’re charging me with aiding and abetting…and because of the severity of the crimes committed…they say I could be looking at life in Azkaban.”

Shocked couldn't nearly describe what she was feeling. Danielle had gotten dressed and run out of the house so quickly that---that she hadn't been able to focus on more than getting to Donovan. Aiding and abetting? The severity----life in Azkaban. She didn't realize she was shaking until his grip on her arms tightened. Danielle blinked rapidly, her mouth trying to form words but she couldn't, she couldn't think of anything to say to him because what could be said?

Azkaban. Life in Azkaban. She felt dizzy, unable to stop her thoughts from spinning out of control. Azkaban, Donovan could go to Azkaban, he could go to prison, he could be locked up for the rest of his life---She needed to think of something to focus again but---the thought of losing him again, the idea that something so untrue could ruin his life, their life....The panic of listening for the guard, the absolutely sheer terror of not having another chance of being with Donovan!

"Marry me," she said whispered sharply. Danielle had never felt so strongly about anything before in her life, her eyes locked onto his as if to tell him that she'd forever be on his side, that she'd wait for him always. If she was going to have to suffer a life without Donovan, she wanted to know that he would've spent it with her if he could.

He knew that dropping that particular bombshell on Danielle was going to cause her to malfunction for a moment, but he hadn’t been expecting that. His eyes searched hers, even though the entire room seemed to be spinning in that moment. His own head was spinning, working double time to try and think of some sort of solution to all of this where everyone walked out happy – where everyone got what they wanted.

But he feared – no, he knew that wasn’t a possibility…but because of the circumstances, he couldn’t just lay down and accept it. Not yet, anyway. Not until he had someone there who was going to be able to shake some sense into him and lead him in the right direction.

That’s why he had hired Rhys Nott. The man was a damn good lawyer, and not only that, his name had been mentioned at least once by his brother. Donovan really did know more than he should about…well, several people.

Still, that didn’t change the fact that Danielle had just proposed the option of marriage to the man standing before her – a man who she may never see again, should something go awry and he be wrongfully charged with crimes he never committed. He knew that was a possibility, he knew this wasn’t a situation to be taken lightly, but-…

He let out a breath that he hadn’t realized he had been holding, and moved his hands to the side of her neck, pressing a kiss to her lips – one that was over far too quickly, seeing how they still had the guard to worry about. He pulled back from her, and then looked her in the eyes – they were still so close that he was practically going cross-eyed just trying to keep eye contact.

“…you know I want to.”

Really, after everything they had been through, who else was he ever going to find in this world to marry? She had always been ‘the one’, but the timing had never been right for either of them, and they had a lot of shit to work through. He wouldn't say 'I will' or 'I'm going to', because that would make it harder to deal with, God forbid he got sent away to that prison, but he'd assure her that her wants were the same as his - she deserved to know that much.

“I love you…it hurts, how much I love you."

She used to not understand that phrase, but it had become perfectly clear in the last few minutes, days, months. Danielle had always thought it was silly to say that you couldn't live without a person because it hurt too much---you most certainly could live to a very old age without ever getting married, but to live was a different story. If she hadn't reunited with Donovan, there would always be a part of her left unfulfilled, she would have always had those questions left unanswered.

A short, surprised giggle escaped her.

But now, she knew. Her eyes went in and out of focus, ready to snog him senseless, but she didn't. Danielle's heart swelled at his response and she wished she could revel in the feeling but she was too smart to know that they didn't have forever, and had been focused enough to hear the guard's footsteps approaching. She smiled before she stepped back and pulled away, her face still red with excitement and adoration as she stuck out her wand at him again. A bright light lit up at the end of it, and the illuminating spell bounced off Donovan's eyes in the dark cell.

"I need you to sit down, Rookwood." Painless green sparks flew out from the end of her wand as she gestured toward the bench. Danielle felt terrible for speaking in such a tone with Donovan, but it had to be professional and--somewhat loathsome, really---Danielle feared she may have appeared too stoic, as the hitwizard entered the cell, looking between both of them.

"Is everything all right?"

"It's fine, he's fine." He wanted to marry her someday, he was more than fine.

"If this one's giving you a problem, his brother's going to be a nightmare."

Danielle bristled at the reminder that she'd also have to perform the examine on Augustus, who might blow her cover up completely, but she had a terrible feeling that he was going to have much fun with this dangerous game she was playing.
