Sloper Wedding!
She'd gone from hyperventilating in a brown paper bag as her sister rubbed her back to feeling like she could fly. Without a broomstick, of course. Brianna clung to Zach's arm as she watched their friends begin to jump onto the dance floor of their seemingly spur of the moment wedding. She had felt awful about not being able to share all the excitement, but knowing that there weren't going to be any photographers jumping out of bushes, and that their wedding photos were going to be their wedding photos was absolutely worth all the stress she'd endured.

"I'm glad you showed," Brianna said teasingly, leaning into Zach's side. What a fit that would have been had if he hadn't figured out that the wedding was in June and not July. Brianna's logical side was sure that she would have said something before the day, but her frantic, sometimes uncontrollable side still wanted to knock his head off for putting that fear into her head. What a boyfriend, she had.

What a husband, she had!

The thought made her smile though and she kissed Zach on the cheek, taking in a deep and happy breath of excitement.

His cold exterior broke once Juliet spoke, Rhys being unable to hold back letting out a long huff. Really, that was what she was going to start with? His date looked like a maid. Any woman could be a maid, their occupation did not rise or sink there level of attractiveness. In fact, Rhys knew of many a men at the firm that throughly enjoyed the looks of their family maids. But they weren't there to talk about Matthieu, now were they?

"They lack the presence and necessary nurture of their mother," Rhys responded, choosing to ignore her side comment. He was not here for petty side stabs, only event-changing statements accompanied by side glares to a select other in his presence. "Tell me, do you even remember what they look like?" He spoke in such an innocent tone it was nearly believable. Like they weren't setting up their pieces for the potential full-battle blow out.

"Their names, perhaps?" Rhys stood stiff, doing his best to ignore the creeping emotions within him that sprouted once he saw her. What was this? Surely it could not be relief, or pleasure in the sight of finally seeing her. How long had it been, exactly? While he had never sat down to think about it, he and Juliet had spent a great amount of time apart from each other in the past months--- more than they had ever experienced in their relationship.

He blinked, finding these feelings annoying and unnecessary. There was no time for them, he was in a mind field right now and losing was not an option. Refocusing, Rhys too crossed his arms over his chest, paying no attention to Catherine or Matthieu, only Juliet.

Juliet nearly cracked an amused smirk at Rhys's retort. Nearly. But not quite... that would do no good, after all, to be the first to show emotion in this conversation, even if she did find what he was saying rather funny, all things considered.

"Ah, but didn't you just say not a month ago that I should never see them again?" she asked innocently, cocking her head to the side. "With such a dismal mother, Evan and Aemelia" --she pointedly included each twin's name-- "cannot be lacking so much with you, can they?"

Although amusing that he chose to contradict himself, Juliet could not help but still feel bitter in the slightest about his earlier remark. The both of them knew that he would not manage to handle the children alone long-term, and vice versa (well, without going insane, that was)... Which was why she had sent the children in the first place to be with him for a while, once she had realized that he was not intending to come home. To threaten that he would somehow gain full custody was silliness, but undoubtedly had struck a nerve that she could not quite explain.

Well, it wasn't as if they were terrible. They were her children, after all... Oh, honestly, this entire situation was stupid. She didn't entirely understand why he would not just give up and come home and resume normal life, as they knew it had to be. She would not admit that she enjoyed their normal home life or anything... of course not, but... it was comfortable, or... whatever.

Rhys opened his mouth, intending to speak, but soon forgot what he was going to say. Suddenly, he felt very over this conversation. While he always enjoyed exchanging witty side remarks with Juliet, this was different. There was no... it felt very flat. Perhaps because neither knew what the end result of this situation would be. For the past many years, there had never really been a threat of them truly breaking apart, but this was much different. They also had children, which complicated things.

Well, not really. They were just being used as pawns in this scuffle between him and Juliet. If it did happen, Evan and Aemelia would grow up to be perfectly capable regardless of whether he and Juliet stayed together. But--- for the first time, Rhys seriously contemplated what his life would be like without Juliet. Pain-free, yes, and not to mention ridiculously less aggravating, but. But they were-- let's be serious, they made each other. No one else could seriously put up with them, let alone be in the other's presence for even half of the time they maintained. So---

The thought of being away from Juliet permanently not please him?

What? Wait. What?

This was news.

Unable to deal with this sudden realization, Rhys exhaled a couple of small huffs, wildly looking down at his hands, running them down his own chest in a lost manner. What? His cold exterior had effectively broken. His hands lifted from his chest, one running through his hair as the other pressed to the front of his face. His pride would just have to jump up his own ass and die for the night, wasn't it? Dammit! Damn damn damn dammit he hated her.

"Fine," Rhys muttered, pressing his hand tightly over his eyes. He could not manage to look at her when he said this. "You win. I was wrong to leave." Fuck, all shreds of his manhood were just shriveling up and dying now. It didn't help at all that he kind of believed what he was saying, either.

What a stupid response. She didn't even have to listen to it to know that whatever came out of Rhys's mouth was going to be stupid, of course, because most things were. He never said anything in arguments which was not idiotic, which is why she always won, except for those few times when he caught her on an off day, which could hardly be counted against her when---

Wait, what?

Wait.

What?

She had almost missed it, she had been so ready with her next jab. She had almost missed what he had said, mouth open already with a poison dart poised on the tip of her tongue, just waiting to strike back, but--but he...

Juliet was nearly certain she had just heard Rhys tell her that she was right and he was wrong, which was... accurate, yes.. which she should have been happy to hear, yes, but... What was going on? Never before in any fight that she had engaged in with Rhys Nott over the past many years had he ever, ever admitted defeat. No, they just didn't do that. When they didn't win a fight, they stormed off and didn't speak to each other, not stood there and just owned up to it. In fact, she was sure that the reason he had run off and stayed away from her in the first place was at least partially because of that aspect of their relationship... which admittedly was fairly frustrating, and which she had admitted to herself during the long months was a very foolish reason to allow yourself to lose contact with your technical husband, but to just actually come out and say it was---

Merlin, she felt dizzy.

There had been very few moments in Juliet's life that broke through her carefully maintained walls of sarcasm and snarkiness, and almost all of them thusfar had for some reason had to deal somehow with the man in front of her. Somehow he was the only one who could say or do something that left her completely stunned and lacking a cool comeback, and he had just done it again, right when she had least been expecting it.

Could you honestly hate someone for basically apologizing? Because Juliet was certain that she had just found a way.

Frozen in place, staring at him intently, her fingers dug into her arms nervously, her whole aura confused and uncertain in that moment. "I--" she struggled, "I---ah, I... see, then." Oh, this was so very uncomfortable. "Then I suppose you... would not mind me seeing them?"

That was right, deflect back to the children. Because this situation had already gone far too much into the two adults in too short a time.

Huh? Rhys dropped his hand from his face in shock, looking just as confused and uncomfortable as Juliet did. Wait--- why wasn't she berating him? Making fun of him for giving in so easily? Attempting to chop off his balls to hang for all to see? He did not understand. What... exactly was happening here? He did not like it.

He shifted his perplexed look from Juliet to Catherine and Matthieu, who had continued their conversation as if they had not been listening. They might not have, and they seemed perfectly fine with each other. What--- was--- happening? Rhys blinked rapidly, finding the room and atmosphere incredibly hot and bothersome. Holy fuck.

So if she was going to go along with this, then he supposed he had no choice to but as well from here on out. Even though... technically he started it. Which felt strange, because Rhys hadn't felt like he truly had. Either way, he wanted nothing more than to leave, move on, and never speak of this moment again.

A smoke! Where was-- Rhys began to pat down his front, looking almost desperately for his pack. He knew he had purposely put them in here knowing how much Juliet hated them--- once his hand finally wrapped around the pack, he remembered he had to say something to her.

"Ah--" Rhys stared, looking confused as his gaze jumped every which way. "They--- are... at my brother's," he spoke jerkily. "We can go...?" He could not finish that sentence, Juliet would just have to figure it out on her own.

Good, so he was out of his element as well... Good, good. As long as they were both acting out of the ordinary, there was no issue with it, right? Well, there was, because it was annoying and uncomfortable, but... there was no way they could make fun of each other, and that was the most important thing. If she had to hear about this again from him in the future, Juliet might have killed herself on the spot.

Despite how awkward it made her feel, she watched Rhys as he fidgeted around and finally pulled out a pack of cigarettes, in that moment not really caring that she had long ago demanded he drop smoking as punishment for getting her pregnant (well, also for the twins, but mostly for her suffering). Hell, she could use one too right about then, as she certainly needed something to bring her head back into reality and sense.

As he spoke, Juliet forced herself to focus on his voice, nodding stiffly a couple of times, not even thinking of how little she desired to see Theo. No, the only thing that mattered was to get away from the reception and out of this strange air and go... home and be normal. Because honestly, she wasn't sure how much more of this torture she could take.

"Yes, I-- let's go, then," she said softly, already stepping forward as she spoke. An awkward near-afterthought, she reached out to grab Rhys's arm as she walked past, and ushered them both out of the reception area as quickly as possible, not a word to their former companions. It did not matter. She just wished to leave.
