Ben, Corliss

Corliss' father had always told him that Hunters could pick shifters out of a crowd. It was an inherent sense honed into a sharp skill. Unfortunately, even with all of the boy's training, Corliss had never been very good at it. Sometimes his father would just look at him and shake his head, and Corliss could hardly stand the disappointment so evident on the man's face. Because of this, he spent a lot of time on his own, trying to improve his skills.

This afternoon was one such time, and after work, he was sitting at a Starbucks in the middle of the Safeway. It was a brilliant invention really, a cafe right there in the middle of a grocery store. It was the perfect place for people watching, and even better for shifter watching because even werecreatures needed to eat. He sat with both hands wrapped around his hot chocolate, letting his eyes drift from person to person, trying to look for the small things his father had told him about. Sometimes he would close his eyes too, trying to listen to the signals his body may be sending him, tingling skin, a quickening heart, anything that might indicate a shifter was nearby. Nothing came and he sighed with frustration, leaning dejectedly back in his chair.

"If they're going to hurt the area and it looks like they won't balance themselves out, then yes, something will have to be done. That doesn't mean I'll put them each in vials and shake the fuck out of them." What the hell. He shook his head lightly. "They're still living things. You treat them with respect."

"But they're just bugs. I step on bugs all the time--sometimes I'll bet I don't even know it. Hey, I'll bet you kill things without even knowing too." What was so perfect about Ben? He put his hands on his hips, just a bit indignant.

"There is," Ben stated, voice hard, "A distinct difference between killing something deliberately and killing something accidently. Most of which has to do with the intent to do harm."

"Are you some kind of vegan?" Corliss had never met anyone like Ben before. Granted, he hadn't technically met the man yet. He stood on his tiptoes so he could see what Ben was doing. He'd never thought beetles could be interesting, but Ben was certainly making them so by his presence.

Oh..so the kid didn't know. A hunter with no idea he was engaging a shifter in conversation. The irony was overwheming. "No, I'm not a vegan." Then, taking some pity on the kid, who clearly was sorely lacking in education, Ben started explaining what he was doing.

"Look...see here?" He pointed to a leaf where a small bit had been cut out. "That is from a beetle larvae. Or a catapillar. You can't know from the bite, but the pattern and," he pulled out a magnifying glass and held it up so that Corliss could see the regular marks around the edge, "that edge, shows us that it was an insect with a certain kind of mouth part."

Corliss was eager to learn. His mind had always been a sponge; it was just unfortunate the sorts of things he'd soaked up so far in life. Of course, he didn't think so. Weres killed people, murdered them from what he'd been taught.

He examined the leaf, nodding. "I see."

Ben tried to keep his skin from crawling being so close to a hunter, but he didn't want to do anything to give himself away. He spent the next hour showing Corliss how to find the beetles, what to look for to tell them apart and describing the one they were looking for. He found nothing though.

"And that..is a day," he said quietly as he started packing up.

Corliss was having fun, even if he was getting a slightly uncomfortable vibe from Ben. "I'm Corliss." He finally said, having forgot they'd never exchanged names. "I saw you at the grocery store with diapers. You got kids?" Ben didn't seem the dad type, but looks were deceiving.

Ben immediately stiffened. He was not going to give this hunter a line on his babies. No way. No how. "Nah. Was picking them up for a neighbor. She had the flu and was out."

"Oh--" Corliss looked incredibly relieved. He absolutely couldn't hide it. "--That's nice of you. Like, really nice."

He shifted from one foot to the other, realizing that Ben was really on his way out. "Um, what's your name?" Because Ben hadn't offered it when he'd offered his own.

Ben let out a breath, but was confused by the boy's relief. What the hell was that about? "Yeah. Suppose so," he admitted. "And. Ben. Call me Ben."

"All right," he laughed. "I'll call you Ben." Because he'd like to run into the guy again so that he'd be able to call him anything at all.

Glancing around briefly, he rocked back on his heels, putting his hands behind his back. "So, you're leaving then? What're you gonna do for the rest of the day?"

"I'm heading back to my place to put these guys under the microscope and see if I can ID them." He gave Corliss a suspicious look, "Why?" No way was he leading this hunter back to his home.

Corliss offered an innocent shrug. "I don't know, just curious." He hardly noticed the suspicious look, though he felt a bit of a prickle at the base of his neck. He paid it no heed, however.

"Maybe I'll see you around, Ben." He said brightly.
