To Tiernan
Being a paralegal was easy. All right, so it wasn't always easy, but Rory was good at it. He hadn't ever really given it much thought to reach higher, but when an opportunity arose across country for him to be a paralegal for a great lawyer - and not just any lawyer, but one of the best in not only muggle law but magical law as well... He couldn't just pass it up. He wasn't sure what to do at first, but a decision had to be made. It wasn't as if anything was keeping him in New York. He knew that he wanted to stay because of Tiernan, but he also knew that was ridiculous. Silly. They weren't even together, and they spent their time making eachother miserable. Maybe San Francisco would have something new to offer him. Maybe he'd find someone he could really be with, and he'd have an amazing job as well. All new oppurtunities.

When he'd handed in his resignation, his boss had been a little shocked, but happy for him. It was all happening so fast, and Rory was packing up his office. It wasn't like a job like this could just wait. Lots of people had been vying for it, and Rory honestly hadn't felt like he was going to get picked. He'd interviewed for it, and the fact that he'd gotten that far had shocked him. And now here he was, about to embark on a new chapter in his life. He was more sad than he was excited, though, and he knew why. A part of him wondered if he should have talked to Tiernan about it all - tried to salvage something between them, but he figured it wouldn't work. Nothing ever worked between them.

Tiernan had been pulling some vindictive shit. He'd asked the lead partner specifically for Rory's services on a particular case that Tiernan knew would keep him in the office even longer hours than usual. He really liked the idea that the man wouldn't be able to make it home to see his boyfriend nearly every night that following week. But when the big boss told him that Rory didn't even technically work there anymore Tiernan felt his soul sink down through the floor. He actually looked down at his feet to see if there were a ton of bricks littering the area because goddamn, there may as well have been for how the news had struck him.

Without even waiting for the partner to offer him another paralegal for the research, Tiernan was out the door and down the hall. Without knocking, he burst into Rory's office and just stared at it. Things were half empty, packed into neat little boxes. Instead of letting the sadness overtake him, he steeled himself and shot Rory a glare. "Were you even going to tell me or were you just going to slink away with your tail between your legs like a coward?"

What Tiernan didn't know was that Rory had broken up with his boyfriend two weeks ago. He realized that being with someone when he wanted to be with Tiernan wasn't fair, and it had been one messy breakup. But it needed to happen, he reasoned.

When Tiernan came through the door, Rory looked a little bit startled as he stood there with a few books in his hands. He'd been hoping to avoid this kind of a thing. Of course he was planning on telling Tiernan, just not here. Not at the office.

"I was going to tell you, just not here," he said back. "And what does it matter anyway - it's not as if we're even friends."

"No, not friends," he said shortly. Tiernan didn't know what they were but it sure as hell wasn't that. His jaw clenched and he kept his gaze leveled harshly against Rory. He didn't know what to say even though his brain was yelling at him to say stop, don't leave. He had to shake his head to prevent himself from blurting it out pathetically.

"Why in the hell are you leaving? Not here? Were you planning on coming over to my house? Calling me? I'm always here. It had to be here." He didn't believe for one second that Rory had been actually planning on telling him. Maybe that was selling the young man short, but it was what Tiernan believed.

"I - all right, so I planned to tell you here, but not when everyone else was here," Rory said as he lifted his wand and waved at the door so that it shut. "Tiernan, why does this even matter?" he asked as he set his wand down along with the books in his hands. "Jeremiah and I broke up. And I got offered a job in San Francisco to work under Lindon Harris - that's huge. It's a big opportunity for me and I think it's time that get out of here. Move forward. You and I are always at each other's throats - it's... Exhausting. I need to move on and you won't let me do that as long as I'm here."

"Lindon Harris is a fucking hack!" Of all the people in the world. That asshole was going to take his very well trained intern and--well Tiernan really didn't want to think about what the man was going to do with him.

Of course he avoided the question about why this mattered. He couldn't answer that. Or he could, but Rory wouldn't accept it. Instead, he looked away from him, folding his arms over his chest and settling into his cold lawyer demeanor. "You choosing to be discreet? I would have thought you'd like to have an ex-lover's spat in public. That's all you wanted the whole time we were together, to be open about it. Now you're hiding it? When you're leaving?" It was a boggle how someone whose mind was so keen could be so dimwitted about something.

The news about Jeremiah nearly killed him. It was the kind of thing that made his heart flutter and he hated the thing in his chest now, the traitor. It only hurt worse to know that Rory had broken up with Jeremiah and was still leaving. That it hadn't been for him.

"Lindon Harris is a very talented lawyer, he's not a hack at all, and you know it - you've even said so yourself how good he is at what he does," Rory countered. "I'm not hiding anything - I just don't see the point in us fighting over something that doesn't matter. We're not together. It wasn't like I was going to be at this firm for forever. This is a huge chance for me to change things and I want to take that chance."

Rory honestly hadn't considered the fact that Lindon might have picked him for anything other than his merit. Rory was a very attractive young man, but he just didn't think so of himself.

"I don't want to fight with you about this, Tiernan."

"If you don't want to fight about it, don't leave. We need you here. Harris is poaching you and it's not right. Did he come seek you out?" Tiernan didn't think that Rory had gone looking for another job, so Harris must have sought him out. The man was a bit of a collector of very pretty, talented people, and Rory certainly fit into that.

Then it dawned on him and he frowned. "A chance to change things? What's wrong with this job? I thought you liked it here. You used to like it here. This used to be a fun job for you."

"What does it matter? This place use to be fun until you decided to make everything hard for me. I can't do it anymore, it's exhausting and I'm miserable," Rory said as he emptied out another drawer. "I can't sleep, I barely eat - when I'm here I obsess about you and when I'm home I obsess about you. I need to start over, I need to get away from this place and I need to get away from you."

The words stung and that infuriated Tiernan. All he could do was stand there and swallow down the urge to fly off the handle.

"I don't try to make things hard for you." It was a smooth lie and he felt bad for it immediately. Pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers, he backtracked. "I'll stop. I'll be civil. I'll even talk to Vincent about moving you up in the ranks. He'll pay you more. You can get a better office." Tiernan was not overestimating his pull in this office. He was a full partner, though not a senior.

"No - Tiernan," Rory said with a heavy sigh as he packed up another box and gave it a tap with his wand to send it on it's way. "It's - just, it's too late, all right? It's done, it's over. I'm leaving. And I think that's what's best for us. For me, for you - for both of us," he added honestly with a frown. "I'm still in love with you and seeing you every single day - it's too hard. I can't get over you if you're around constantly."

Tiernan took three steps forward and then hesitated, correcting himself by taking one step backward. Rushing onto Rory would be a mistake, but he wanted to physically hold him in place. "You got over me enough to find a boyfriend," he pointed out, trying his best to keep the bitterness from his voice. He was struggling to keep this from escalating into a full scale fight. But at least Tiernan could sense that a full blown battle was the last thing Rory needed to convince him to stay.

"What if he comes on to you?" he asked suddenly, ripe with a jealous edge to his voice.

"I wasn't - I was only with him to try and get over you. It didn't work," Rory said in exasperation. "Lindon isn't going to come on to me - why can't you just let me go do this? Why would you want me to stay? Why do you care?"

If Tiernan wanted him to stay so badly, Rory wanted to know why. He could guess the reason, but he didn't want to get his hopes up. He didn't want any ridiculous notions clouding up his head over this decision. Tiernan was always so good at getting under his skin and staying there no matter what Rory did to get him out.

"Because if you go then I have absolutely no hope of convincing you that you were wrong to dump me for stupid reasons." Tiernan still thought the whole thing was stupid and childish. Who cared if they hid what they were doing? He still didn't get Rory's perspective that to hide it actually hurt. Tiernan also still thought that it would get one of them in trouble if it came out that they'd been together during Rory's internship.

The way he said it made it sound like all he wanted from Rory was to prove him wrong, not to get back together with him. That, of course, was not what Tiernan wanted to do. He wanted Rory back, desperately and now he was watching his last chances of that slip away with every office supply Rory packed into a box.

Rory didn't know what to say in return to that, so he said nothing. Instead he just packed up another box and tapped it with his wand so that it was on it's way. He kept on packing and sending boxes away until there wasn't anything left, and then he tugged on his jacket to button it up.

"I have to go, I have things to get ready at home and send off and not much time to do it," he mumbled as he tucked his wand inside of his jacket sleeve.

Quickly closing the distance between them, Tiernan grabbed on to Rory's wrist so that if he popped out, Tiernan would go with him. He was not letting him off this easily. "When are you going? When do you start work there? And you never told me what you'd do if Harris hit on you. I know for a fact that he likes pretty young paralegals as much as I do. Hell, maybe he'd make you junior partner; he likes those even more."

The thought of Rory being with someone else was just about as much as Tiernan could stand. After a second of thinking, his mouth curved into a smile and he tugged Rory closer to him. "You were really using Jeremiah to get over me?"

When Tiernan grabbed a hold of his wrist, Rory sighed and lowered his gaze. He'd been hoping to avoid this. A part of him believed he'd wanted to tell Tiernan, but another had been hoping to just be able to up and go without an altercation.

"Stop it," he said as he lifted his gaze back up to the other man's face. "I can take care of myself. I don't want to talk about this anymore."

"I don't want you to leave," he said and the emotion in his voice was so sudden and real that it even surprised Tiernan himself. So much so that he released Rory from his grasp and took a few steps back. He stood there and stared at the man for a moment before turning and heading toward the door. "I'm sorry, you're right. You can obviously take care of yourself. Good luck. Good bye. All that." He waved one hand at him as his other hand worked at the door handle to fling the door open.

He was going to fucking lose it. He needed to get out of there and he needed to get to a gym or someplace where he could scream obscenities at an underling for a careless mistake.

So many times Rory had gone after him. Even times when he knew he shouldn't have. Times when he'd been with Jeremiah and times when he'd even let himself kiss Tiernan - it had only happened twice, but it had been enough. And so many times after fights when he and Tiernan were a couple. A part of him wanted to run after him and to be honest about how he felt, but instead he just stared and then he apparated home. It was time to really do the things he said he was going to do instead of giving in to Tiernan all of the time and getting no where for it.
