Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Who: Martin & Nick
What: They've both gone out with someone else. Neither is happy.
Where: Nick's apartment.
When: Laaaaaaate, after both of them get home from their respective dates.
Warnings: Language, for now.

Normally, Martin would have knocked before entering Nick's house. This was mostly because the one time he had barged in without doing so she had screamed at him mercilessly and kicked him out so he could repeat the process the right way. But tonight he didn't give a fuck. Tonight, he all but ripped the damned door off its hinges, letting it bang noisily against the far wall before he caught it on its rebounding trajectory and slammed it closed behind him. Hopefully that would be enough warning for her if (Merlin forbid) she had Betram in there with her.

"Nick!"

It was probably entirely too late (or early, depending on how you viewed that sort of thing) for him to be hollaring like he was, but he didn't care. Seeing that she wasn't in the living room, he immediately headed for the bedroom, throwing that door open without knocking too. He was relieved to find that she was in there alone.., he might have actually gone to jail for murder, otherwise. But that didn't stop him from stabbing his index finger towards her accusingly and saying quite loudly, "You have ruined me!" It probably would have been quite comical to hear such a dramatic statement come from him if he hadn't looked so furious. "I hope you had a
great time with that stupid fucker Bertram, because thanks to you I had the worst night ever!".

Nicole nearly jumped two feet in the air at the sudden apparent decimation of her front door, and her hand reached instinctively for her wand. Even when she heard Martin's voice echo through her flat, she didn't unclench her fist from around the thin piece of wood, a hex on the tip of her tongue in the very real scenario that he was either (a) drunk, (b) had gone insane, or (c) smelled like Lydia Proudfoot.

Actually, come to think of it, she was angry enough at him to just hex him anyway.

Nick listened to the footsteps come nearer and nearer until he was right in front of her, screaming at her at the top of his lungs about---oh for Christ's sake, he really thought she'd gone out with that little boy? He honestly knew nothing about her if he thought---how could he believe---well, she wasn't him, after all!

No, actually, after she was done at the pitch she had nicely (with two tight slaps--honestly, the kid needed them, talking like that to women) explained to him the situation, that she had no interest in going out with anyone at the moment, and had left for home. Where she'd been ever since, sitting up in bed and reading a book because the hell if she could sleep just thinking about what her boyfriend (or ex, what the fuck ever) was doing with that street walker of his.

Not that she'd tell him that.

"Oh? I'm very sorry to hear that," Nicole replied, her face deadpan and uninterested. "Now if you're done stomping around like a caveman, you can show yourself the door. I was just about to get some sleep."

He leaned towards her, both eyebrows skyrocketing up beneath the curls that overshadowed his forehead. "Oh really? Well for your information I'm not done, so you'll just have to stay up until I'm done." Fortunately for him, he was neither drunk or insane (not completely, anyway), and nor did he smell like Lydia Proudfoot. The latter was the exact reason he was here raising hell like this.

"I'll have you know that I went out with Lydia tonight." He did not give her a chance to interrupt. He simply went right on, pacing back and forth like an agitated animal in a cage, his hands occassionally employed to make elaborate gestures or rake through his hair every now and again. "I went to her place, and you want to know what happened?" He actually stopped to look at her expectantly, but before she could even guess he interrupted anyway. "I'll tell you what happened, Nick! Nothing! Not a damned thing! Because all I could think about was you knobbing that stupid smug bastard and then all I could think about was killing him. And then you know what I did? I'll tell you! I left!"

Again he was pointing at her. "I came here to see you. See what you've done to me?!"

Nick's mouth actually gaped open a little before she could stop herself from doing it. It was just that---

Nothing had happened? Because he was thinking about her?

It wasn't like Martin being loyal was completely outside of the realm of possibility, but she certainly hadn't expected it now. He had just been acting like such a child, and if he did believe that she had gone and slept with that kid, then really, he had no reason not to pursue Lydia. By all means, she thought he had--with the way that he had spoken to her, the thoughts of the two of them rolling around in the sheets was the only thing that she could think of for hours (and the United were short a few extra Quaffles just for that).

But he hadn't. If what he was saying was to be believed, he had just acted like a good boyfriend... A good boyfriend who she still couldn't not be pissed off at, even as she felt the relief of his fidelity wash over her.

"You know, you're honestly the only person I know that could compliment and insult me at the same time like that," she said, setting her book aside. Nick crossed her arms over her chest and glared across the room at him. "If you really think I 'knobbed'" --honestly, where did he learn slang like that-- "that sorry excuse for a man, then I'll get up and kick you out of here myself."

Her statement served to render him momentarily speechless, his jaw having gone slack with surprise. This expression then transitioned to a suspicious glare, dark eyes narrowed warily at the blonde woman who was currently staring at him like she wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to let him live. "So... you didn't sleep with him?" Ok, so he was a little slow on the uptake.

He mulled this over, thick arms coming to cross over his abdomen. He still looked agitated, but he had to admit that he was immensely relieved. Not to say that he wasn't going to rip that fucker apart the next time he saw him... that was just a given. Glaring at the far wall, he ground his teeth for a few moments and, when he decided to speak he was yelling again, as though his momentum had never wavered in the first place. "Well you can't do that, because I don't wanna be broken up anymore!" So there!

"What if I don't want you back?"

In the face of his childish yelling, Nicole's face stayed unamused, unchanged in the slightest. She was---she was truly relieved to hear him say that, that he didn't want to be broken up, because as much as she hated to admit it she loved the idiot (how could she have gotten this far otherwise?). But it still bothered her, that he had been so quick just earlier to cast her off and go looking elsewhere. Even if it had been to get back at her for what she'd said---you didn't do that, not to the girl you'd been dating for over a year. He needed to know that.

"Really, to tell you the truth, Martin, I don't find you dangling another woman in my face over a stupid joke to be very attractive," she replied. Even if after the terrible night she'd just gone through thinking about what he was doing with Lydia she just wanted to kiss him for having come back, she was determined to stand her ground and say this. "Seriously? I've said it a million times before, but now I've really had it. Grow up."

"But you did the same damned thing to me!" he wailed; as dim-witted as he was, even he could see the hipocricy in her statement. "You even put that stupid post up on the journals before I ever did!" He knew he had her there, and he was helpless to stop the slightly smug expression that overtook his features with that realization. But it was short-lived, because the way she had voiced that first question made it sound like she might actually mean it this time.

"This is ridiculous! You're seriously not gonna take me back? Incase you've already forgotten, let's recap. I came all the way back here from Lydia Proudfoot's apartment to beat the shit out of that little putz because I couldn't stand the thought of him touching you! And you know what, that might be immature to you, but I love you so maybe you should just lighten the fuck up for a change!" He was positively fuming by this point, so much so that he didn't even notice that he had said those three words aloud... the three words that had until then gone unspoken between them.

"I did that because you decided to be an asshole and broke up with me over a stupid joke about Noah and I sure as hell wasn't going to let you get the best of me after you'd pulled some stunt like that!"

In the span of about half a second, Nick had gotten off the bed and started advancing towards him, now the second person in the room yelling their head off, because she had had it. If he was going to try to call her a hypocrite after he'd been the one to tell her it was over, then had another fucking thing coming, he really could get out now because suddenly she very much didn't want him in her sight, the stupid, arrogant, childish---

---what had he just said?

Nicole had been in his face (almost literally, except he was taller, so she couldn't quite, but--), mouth open to continue to let him have it, and she had very suddenly stopped dead in her tracks as her mind tuned into what he had just said.

"You---" She wanted her mouth to work, but it was hard, it was hard in all the shock to even form thoughts, much less speak them. "---what did you---"

When she sprang out of bed like that, Martin's body viseably tensed, muscles coiled as though preparing for a physical fight. He'd never admit it, not even penalty of death, but Nick could be scary as hell when she was angry, and he had been on the receiving end of her violent tendencies enough times to know that it actually hurt. He was staring down at her defiantly, ready for another deafening outburst... but then she just sort of sputtered out.

The way she was staring at him made him quickly go back and recall exactly what he had just said, this process physically manifested in the way his eyebrows drew down low upon his forehead and his head tilted like a confused puppy. To his credit, it barely took any time at all for him to realize just what had her all flustered. He'd said... the 'L' word. Somewhat awkward silence ensued then, stretching thick and palpable between them, until finally he leaned forward, and in a much quieter voice than he'd been using, said softly, "I said... you should lighten the fuck up."

And then he grinned sheepishly and awaited her reaction.

So did she smack him, did she kiss him, or did she tell him off some more?

Nick didn't know which one she wanted to do more. On one hand, he was playing around, he wasn't going to say it again and---maybe it had been a fluke, and if it had been a fluke she would want to do more than smack him, but. But if it hadn't been, and he was playing around then she wanted to kiss him because he had said it and meant it and that was a big deal. But that still meant he wasn't repeating it and she needed to hear it, she needed him to say it again because she was caught so off guard the first time that she couldn't be sure of it and didn't he know you couldn't just do that?

Maybe--one more chance, maybe she'd give him one more chance, because she was still a little too stunned to properly muster up a good argument or slap, so--

"No, the part--before that," she said. "What did you say?"

It was almost worth it to see her this out of sorts. It happened so very rarely that he got the upper hand with her in their arguments, and he couldn't say that he wasn't enjoying it a little bit. He was sure that he would be loving it even more if he wasn't slightly (ok, maybe not-so-slightly) freaked out by what he had said himself.

Being in the corner as he was, he quickly began to show his discomfort. Of course he had meant what he'd said... at least... he was pretty sure he did. It was hard to know when you didn't have anything to compare it to, but after a year spent with Nick he'd never had a single desire to cheat on her, could trust her not to do the same, actually enjoyed spending time with her and above all... he trusted her. If that wasn't love he didn't know what was.

So he very carefully lifted his hands to either side of her face, gently smooshing her cheeks so that her lips made a strange, fish-mouthed shape. He stared down at her with utmost seriousness for a few moments and then, still in that quiet voice, he repeated himself for her. "I said... I love you."
