Oh, what fools these mortals be!
Asleif, frankly, had had more than enough of being cooped up at the Avengers Mansion with not only her siblings, but that ridiculous red-haired mortal girl and the rest of the so-called "Young Avengers."   And while they were not technically supposed to venture forth, when had she ever let that stop her before?

So, first using a simple spell to teleport herself outside, and then a second to adopt proper mortal guise (at least to the eyes of any weak-willed mortal), she had set about into the city.

Strange city, truly.  Fascinating, in its own way.  Very unlike the Golden Realm.  Here, there were wretched lost souls amidst spires of glory and audacity.  Contradictions everywhere she looked.

At a mortal shop, a mortal had asked if he could buy her something called "coffee."  She had accepted, largely out of curiosity.  He had been rather upset when she had walked away after excepting the drink, but a fiery gaze had sent him fleeing in the other direction, terrors conjured up in his mind enough to dispel any further conversation.

And so she sat and sipped, dipping briefly into mortal minds  to scan their thoughts.  Truly strange creatures.

Vincent had accepted his brother's invitation to a local cafe they frequented, but something had begun pricking at his mind as they came within a few hundred yards of it. There was a mage of considerable talent present, but that wasn't what bothered him.

It was almost certainly an Asgardian, and familiar beyond that as well.

Could she be here?

His pace quicked a bit as they entered the shop, trying not to betray his curiosity to Kristoff. A glance around the cafe and he couldn't help but pinpoint the source. No... not his mother, but a young woman carrying herself in much the same manner, in regal Asgardian garb.

A very attractive young woman, a bit older than him, but that had never stopped him before, on a few memorable occasions. He raised a hand to signal for his brother to stay back, while he retrieved something sinfully tasty and encrusted with chocolate from the desert case.

He approached the young woman and set the plate on her table, using that motion to bow discretely, lowering his voice. "What brings such a woman of obvious beauty and power to Midgard?"

Kristoff waited in silence while his brother apparently had an impulse to buy dessert for a woman closer to his own age than Vincent's. He looked at her; something was potentially odd. If it turned out to be magic, well, that was certainly more Vincent's field than his, and he'd just stay quiet unless and until brought into the conversation or if Vincent appeared to be doing something exceptionally unfortunate.

Now this? This was something quite different. The young man was faintly familiar, as though out of the long forgotten past, but there was little mistaking his bearing.

She did not question how he had pierced her glamour. One never asked a question one did not already know the answer to, after all.

"Duties," she said, "and responsibilities to Midgard have ever been strong within mine line. I art simply fulfilling those duties."

She looks him over, approvingly. "Though it art good to see there yet be some in this realm who doth know the proper way to address a lady of the Golden Realm."

Vincent seated himself across from her, propping up his chin on one hand. "'Twould be shameful not to; and I have ever valued addressing a woman of such beauty, whatever her origin." He smiled, raising an eyebrow.

"Of course, one of the Golden Realm merits particular attention. It is my tragedy to be removed from it for so long." He let out a calculated sigh of longing.

Asleif placed on hand on her chin as she considered him. "Thou doth possess quite the silver tongue," she said.

His revelation is only a small surprise, one which she does not let show. "I had thought thee of that stock. But what bringth thee to Midgard, then?"

"It's a skill I employ with pride, as often as circumstance and the beautiful women allow." He grins slyly, exposing his teeth.

He averts his gaze. "Sadly.. my father was seen as a most wicked figure, one enough that my mother saw fit to remove me from the Golden Realm once it came to light, and have me raised on Midgard."

Asleif smiled a very small smile indeed. Perhaps there might be something to say for this world after all. "You doth flatter me," she says.

"I recall," she went on, "hearing rumors once, of such a birth, but do not remember any proof arising."

"It is my sincere pleasure to do so, fair lady." He disguises a crack in his smile, at the topic of his leaving Asgard, by turning his head again, running a hand through his hair.

"As with so much in life.." Vincent brought his hands together on the table, using one to cover a brief flickering of lights he created with the other. "..appearances and perception matter so much more than reality."

His focus is on that smile, however faint it was. "Carefully chosen words, even without magic behind them, can turn worlds."

"Well said," she replied, taking in a moment to gauge his magical potential. Possibly high, though she would need to see more.

She nods slightly. "I am Asleif Thorsdottir."

Vincent lowers his head again, it helps mask his surprise. "Vincent Amorason is humbled and pleased to meet you." He lifts his head again, smiling.

"Even more-so, to find a lady that appreciates the power of misdirection, or even merely inconvenient truths." He smiles and gestures over-dramatically as he pushes the plate a bit nearer to her.

"Please accept this meager offering, as it may please your... palate." He let a pause hang just for a moment, before lowering his tone a bit at the end.

Kristoff was managing to notice, even from a distance, but Vincent's discomfort and that he had most definitely started flirting. He didn't know what had bothered him,

But it hadn't taken long to see through the illusion, and whie he still had no idea who the woman was, he knew what.
His baby brother was just getting started being very Vincent with an Asgardian. This most likely would not end well.

And so he finally walks across the room. "Please excuse me, Miss," he says with a very polite nod, rather bordering on a bow, but this is still public and he lacks Vincent's knack for 'subtlety' in dramatic gestures. He then addresses his brother with a look of Concern. "Vincent? Is everything all right?"

Asleif held eye contact with Vincent for a moment. "'tis but my nature to ever misdirect and confound," she said, nodding thoughtfully. "You doth have something of thine mother about thee, I see that clearly now. Thou art well and truly of Asgardian stock... if not wholly so."

She picked up the offered chocolate, nibbled on in a slow, sensual manner. "Pleasing... Most pleasing indeed."

A flicker of amusement dances in her eyes when Kristoff interrupts. This day was turning out to be quite entertaining.

Vincent felt a creeping swell of pride at the compliment, and eyed her shamelessly as she ate.

As Kristoff arrived, Vincent raised a hand dismissively. "Kristoff, your concern is touching, but all is well. Excellent, even." He afforded Asleif a wink.

The glare Asleif was currently giving Kristoff could well have been used to strip paint from walls.

"Yes. Kristoff, was it? We were having a perfectly fine conversation."

Kristoff, who could handle horrific glances well enough, nodded again simply; antagonizing her would be very counter productive.

"Kristoff it was, Miss. Dr. Kristoff Vernard, an honor to meet you." He suppresses a sigh, the woman's reaction rendering just insisting on getting Vincent away to talk privately problematic. "And I am very glad to hear it, of course. Please excuse the sudden interruption."

Vincent's smile grew wider. Up to a point, a woman who wasn't afraid to try to take his brother down a notch fascinated him. He did however turn and give him a practiced Look. The 'I am proceeding with caution, but do not foresee any problems' Look.

He grinned deviously at Asleif. "Hold on." Extending a leg under the table to brush against her own, he murmured the words of power for a teleportation spell, whisking them both to the roof of that building.* As they rematerialized, his hand shot forward for her own, the shift from sitting to standing leaving one temporarily off balance, righting them both.

He raised his eyebrows briefly and gave a wicked smile as he kept hold of her hand. "I can calculate with almost total certainty the cascade of facial reactions Kristoff is going through."

Not that she would ever have admitted it, but the teleportation had surprised Asleif. She would not have thought Vincent capable of it. And as for having touched her, well...

Perhaps a little impudence could be charming, in its own way.

"Most impressive," she said, then actually laughed at his appraisal of Kristoff. "I rather suspect it wouldst be most entertaining indeed."

Vincent kissed the back of her palm before releasing her hand. "Not nearly as impressive as thou, I would reckon."

He put his hands on his hips and shrugged, smiling casually. "He fancies himself my caretaker, as he did indeed look after me when I came to Midgard. He seems to experience difficulty with the notion that I have grown since then."

He looked off over the rooftops. "So... how much of this jewel of a city have you seen?"

"Thou art quite... impressive in thine own way as well, I must admit," she said, almost finding herself blushing. Few amongst the gods had paid her such attention, not that she had coveted such, true, but...

"Precious little," Asleif replied. "Mine siblings and I have been guests of the Avengers and have not as of yet been given much reign to explore. I decided to simply remove myself of my own accord and see what there was to be seen."

"I thank you for your kindness." The eyebrows jumped slightly, with his usual lady-killer smile and gaze. "By word now, and by whatever manner thou wouldst later allow as well." He couldn't help but slip into a bit of the old world Asgardian accent.

Vincent blinked at the mention of siblings, plural. No way to be discrete about that one, so he played it honestly.

"Siblings? I was not aware Lord Thor had children; as I was... a somewhat reclusive child, and removed from Asgard so young." He smiled. "Would the lady care for a guide?"

"Aye," Asleif replied. "A brother, Halbjorn, and three younger siblings who remained in Asgard by mine blood mother, Einmyria, and two half-sisters, Svalin and Ardis by mine other mother, Sif."

She nodded. "The lady wouldst be most pleased to accept."

"Your family is robust. I have no siblings to call my own blood, so far as I know." Vincent avoided denying Kristoff, he owed him that much.

He smiled as she accepted the offer. "What pleases thine interests? Music? Food? Performance? There is little that cannot be had in this city."

She waved a hand dismissively. "Mine siblings art... not much like mineself. They art much more interested in adventures and victories than I art."

"Performances?" she asked. "What mean you by this?"

"Music, acting, comedy... although the last may be a bit too enmeshed to Midgard's affairs for you to garner the full experience.." Vincent thought further.

"We have many museums, parks kept with beasts from all across the world, galleries of art and rarities..."

Asleif considered the offer. "Very well," she said. "I doth believe that a museum may prove... most enlightening. If I am to walk amongst mortals, it wouldst be important to learn that which I can about them."

Vincent smirked contentedly to himself. "As the lady wishes. 'The Met' is a popular venue, showcasing art from around the world. It may give you some insight into the diversity of Midgard's peoples." He offered her his hand again.

She took his hand. "That sounds like a pleasant way to spend the day. And as for the night, that yet remains filled with possibilities."
