Calm Before the Storm
Once the players had all been gathered, Loki transported himself, along with Ardis and Halbjorn, the spider-god Ohu, the mortals Grace, Griffen, and Dawn, and the mysterious woman called Marlow, to Asgard. It was a desolate, abandoned region, where few would ever traverse. He himself had only been here to make certain that the Norn Stones had still been in place, should he require them for a future plot. He had discovered the Grandmaster only by chance.

The Grandmaster, the being who stood before them now.

"Greetings again to thee, Elder," Loki said, feigning humility and feeling disgust at doing so. The Elders were older even than the Asgardians themselves, possibly the one set of beings in the universe who might yet give them pause. He it galled him to know there were beings truly his superior. "And again, mine thanks for thine leave to gather mine champions. T'will make for a most entertaining game, I doth assure thee."

The Grandmaster sneered. Foolish little gods. They had no idea of what true power was, of what it truly meant to last, the Asgardians least of all the pantheons of the pitiable planet called Earth.

"You certainly took your sweet time, Asgardian," he snapped. "I had almost thought my time was being wasted. But I see you have made your choices. I am not especially impressed. I do hope they look better than they fight."

He snapped his fingers and his own champions appeared. "These ones have been waiting some time to challenge your so-called "Defenders." This one..." He gestured to the one wearing dark armor and carrying a deadly looking axe, "especially."

Dawn sucked in a breath, both from the shock of the teleportation and the shock of everything else.

Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God!

Breathe. She had to breathe. She was going to hyperventilate.

Ohu waves happily.

"Hi, Grandmaster! I know many stories about you! Shall I tell you a story of when you challenged Kang the Conqueror, or when you made a bet with Daredevil, or maybe some other stories?"

Why, yes, these are stories that involved the Grandmaster losing his challenges. But certainly Ohu doesn't mean anything by that, judging by his wide smile.

"So who's the referee?"

The demonrider was fully awakened and merged with Marlow's mind. Power trickled along her skin and in the air around her. At full force and using divine sources, Marlow had the potential to destroy small planets.

It watched the Grandmaster warily.

The Grandmaster was unreadable as he looked over at Ohu, save for the smallest twitching of annoyance at the corners of his mouth.

"Save your stories for another time, godling," he told Ohu. "And a referee shall not be necessary. I play an honest game, after all. You and your fellow Defenders shall battle my champions, and whichever side scores the most defeats of the other shall be the victor."

Ohu doesn't like the idea of a game being judged by two beings he doesn't trust, but he doesn't let the smile vanish from his face.

"And how do we score defeats? First blood? To the death? To unconsciousness? To the pain? To whoever loses at checkers? To whoever can be tied to the back of a rabid llama? There are many ways to measure defeat... or battle!"

Ohu's eyes are wide and questioning, innocent.

Breathe. Breathe. Deep, slow breaths. In and out.

Yeah, not really helping with the whole panicking thing.

"Let these challenges begin, and we shalt prove victorious." Halbjorn has no hesitation in this. He lives for challenges, and dies at Asgard's whim, if that's his fate. This is just one more test to be faced without fear or hesitation.

Grace didn't say anything.

Challenges. Right. She could do this. She could totally do this.

"Whatever I defeat belongs to my master," Marlow murmured. "Bring your champion and see it ground beneath my feet and scattered to the winds."
