Not a Good Day
Most people don't know that the great composing team of Ulvaeus and Andersson wrote songs about religious anguish and almost-despair along with songs about dancing queens and something in the air.

But they did. And that's what's filing Mel's room right now. As she lies, in full uniform, on her bed with a blank look at the ceiling.

...And everything had been going so well.

Jordan catches the music as he's passing in the hall, and is well aware that Mel's mood can often be felt by the general environment. And right now, that definitely doesn't sound good.

He peeks his head in. "Everything ok?"

"...Technically. Sorry, I'll turn it down." And rather than actually get up to touch the stereo system, Mel starts to melt into the wall beside her bed to go haunt it.

Jordan makes his way into the room, mostly closing the door behind him so she and her mood have some privacy if she wants to talk. "No, the music is fine. Just checking on you."

Mel paused.

"It's weird and stupid and I don't want to tell Alex yet."

"Ok, then I won't tell Alex either til you're ready, if you want to talk to someone non-judgemental about it?"

"...You're not going to like it either. I just really don't want Alex to get all worr--" And something changes in Mel's eyes when she remembers what happened when she got hurt.

"Nothing. It's stupid and probably won't amount to anything and ...I'll just stop thinking about it. Promise."

Jordan sighs, then sits down. "You're here and you're talking about it, and obviously worried about something. What's going on, Mel?"

"...I got a creepy e-mail."

Jordan frowns, then nods. "Ok, tell me about it. Hopefully you have it saved... I can work on tracking it down. We have pretty good security and computer resources for a reason."

"Right. Right. You can track it down," Mel says, suddenly liking this prospect. " And it'll turn out to be some stupid nobody, because it can't be who it says it's from. I'll jsut show you right now."

She pulls up her e-mail and shows it to him. It's from some nondescript address from a nondescript e-mail service.

Dear Melanie,

It's a lovely name. I wonder if you have her eyes.

Is that a prelude or what? Are we being written by a twelve-year-old with a flair for the dramatic?

Sincerely,
Deda.

Mel sits with her arms crossed, looking at her shoes. "Deda means grandfather."

Jordan stares at it for several seconds. "I can track the service down and all. I'll also make sure we know everything the authorities know about his current status. It'll be ok, Mel."

"...Okay. Right."

Jordan nods firmly. "What was the last you heard about his status? I haven't checked up in a while. I know some of the prisons have been trying to have limited technology training... some news access. But no e-mail... so I'm sure you're right. Some sick person's idea of a joke."

"Still in the Superhuman wing at Ryker's. Still crazy. There was nothing about a breakout in the news."

She nods emphastically. "Right.... but they got the complaining about writers and everything. He'd do that, Grandma Melanie said."

He nods. "We'll check every possibility out. They have had complaints. If it was from the prison, it would have had to have bounced through somewhere else to get this address." So either it wasn't him, he's gotten a lot more technologically adept, or he had outside help. All things to check on carefully.

"And I'll most definitely be checking with Rykers, and if there's any hint something went out, getting his internet privileges yanked."

"No problem, just take it easy, and try and relax. This music is just going to keep you in this mood. I'll get right on this." he replies, standing and heading for the door.

Jordan sighs, then turns and shakes his head. "No need to worry him til we have more information. Just try and take it easy. If there's more to it than a stupid prank, he'll need to know... but right now, I can keep it quiet for a bit til there's something to tell, until you're ready. Meanwhile, if you need to, you're welcome to come keep me company."

Mel turns the music off. "Yeah. ...That'd be nice. Thank you. Sorry to be a bother. I don't want to be dishonest, but I don't want anyone to freak out, and... well, yeah. You're right." She'll come along.

Jordan nods. "You're never a bother, Mel. You do a lot for this team, and this is part of my job. Just come hang out while I do some digging, and feel free to stick around as long as you need. We'll tell people what they need to know as soon as we know the full situation."

And she'll go with him, and after a moment, she'll manage a small smile. "I'll have to thank Mason sometime," she said. "For all of your excellent Big Brother experience."

That finally gets him to break a bit of a smile. "I do my best."
