Sunday evening (open)
Without a best friend to hang out with anymore, Sammy had taken to spending her free time away from the helicarrier at a 24 hour coffee shop near her apartment. The coffee was plentiful, the wait staff friendly enough, and she could hold down a seat at the counter as long as she liked. Her version of the colonel's Fury Files were practically updating themselves with regular attention and caffeine shots. If she kept this up, her final papers would be written months before they were due.

Good thing she hadn't gotten around to buying plants for the apartment. Between the helicarrier and the coffee shop, she wasn't home enough to remember to water them. The last thing she needed was to be a plant murderer.

Josh's regular coffee shop was undergoing renovation, so he chose to try another place until it reopened. Still, he was surprised when he noticed Sammy.

"Morning, Miss Fury." He avoided saying "Agent" in a public place. "Would it be okay if I joined you?"

Sammy blinked out of her caffeine haze to see Hoskins standing over her. The one agent she could have sworn would walk over fire to get away from her.

The Miss part gave her a way out of blurting Agent. "Mr. Hoskins? Uh, sure. Have a seat." She moved her tablet out of the way and gestured to the stool next to her. "What brings you over to this side of town?"

"Thank you." He took a seat across from her. "My usual coffee fix is undergoing some reconstruction, so I decided to try somewhere else."

"They do a really nice cone drip here. Fresh dark roast." She paused to close her notebook. "This is my usual place. I live nearby."

"Hmm, I may have to try one." He notes her paperwork. "What were you working on?"

"School papers. I'm working on a criminal justice degree. And some notes for work." She shrugged a little. "It's a habit I picked up, making notes on people, places, situations, just in case it comes in handy later. I've noticed you doing the same thing at work."

"Where do you go to school?" Josh asked curiously. He nods, confirming what she said. "Also a habit. I picked it up during my time in the CSA."

"ESU. Did the classroom work when I was with the previous team, now it's all online." She half smiled. "The deputy director's theory on why employees are younger every year is online education. How long were you in the CSA?"

"Sounds like a logical hypothesis. Why go through all the trials of school when you can learn from the comfort of your own home." The waitress brings Josh his order. "About a year. At first I thought I was making a difference, but after awhile it just seemed like the CSA was less about fixing superhuman problems and just pursuing an anit-superhuman agenda. I've got no patience for bullshit lie that."

That had Sammy nodding in agreement. "It's a sad thing when the superheroes themselves are working harder to fix the problems than the elected officials that are supposed to be looking out for everyone's best interest. But then, they really never have, have they? You substitute one group for another and it really hasn't changed for anybody." She bit her lip at her rambling. "Sorry. Political science minor. I'm supposed to study the very groups I intend to piss off greatly in the future. All it does is infuriate me."

He nods at all this, taking a sip of his coffee.

"It's why I joined Shield. Sure there are a bunch of hidden agendas, but at least it's actually trying to help people." he waves it off. "No problem at all. I majored in it in college. I know there's a lot of BS involved. I'm surprised your dad's never shot any bureaucrats by now."

"He wants to, but he's become good at looking at big pictures. He's seen it all happen more than once. That's the kind of bedtime story I got as a kid. I bet your dad had some great bedtime stories." Josh Hoskins had his very own file on her harddrive. Looking toward the future meant keeping track of all potential allies and enemies.

Josh's face seemed to darken a moment upon mention of his father, but it passes. "Yeah..yeah he did."

The Famous Fury Tact strikes again. Subject change. "So, SHIELD hidden agendas aren't high on your list of things that bother you about SHIELD. I'm going on out a limb with an observation that you've been spending time working working on who's hiding what because you like to know about things."

He shrugs. "Guilty as charged. I tend to be nosy, making sure projects that Director Fury likely wouldn't approve of don't get too far along."

"I could've done without that last mission," she grumbled into her cup before setting it down. "It won't be quiet for long. The colonel lends me out between missions on occasion. Can't decide if he's trying to keep me out of trouble or building goodwill in other places. You're not much for fieldwork, are you?"

"I think a lot of lasting changes can get done behind the scenes, but I did do a fair amount of fieldwork for awhile. Been a bit though. My last tour was in Slorenia, saw the Bloodwraith giant striding across a dead country. ..It was a poignant experience, and a reminded why we have teams like the Avengers out there."

That shut her up for a few minutes. It was an experience she hadn't had yet, and hopefully she never would.

"The Colonel wants our particular special ops team to take a place beside the Avengers and the others, and go into places they can't. What do you think our chances are?"

He sets his cup down. "I think it's something we need. The fact is there are situations out there that your standard superhuman team isn't equipped for..or ready to do. I admire the codes of ethics that a lot of those teams possess but sometimes..some fuckers just need to die," Josh said quietly.
