Awkward
'Hi, Iris. I got this for you, since I missed your birthday. Not that it's like buying your forgiveness or something--'
'Hey, Iris, what's up? How was your birthday? Hey, do you have any allergi-- oh, really should've asked that one--'
'Hey, Iris! I got somethin' you're gonna love! ...great, now it sounds like one of Jordan's pick-up lines.'

Teddy Knight really isn't good at this stuff. Where he went wrong was relaying the whole dilemma to his father, Jack. When you tell a girl that she deserves fancy dinners and puppies from guys, there's always the chance she'll get attached to the idea of a puppy. From you. So what does it mean when a girl expects gifts from you? And what happens if you... well, don't give them?

Jack seemed to think the appropriate thing to do is follow up on the remark, but he kept smirking as he talked. Teddy's pretty sure his old man was just baiting him for a laugh, although how, he can't be sure. Jack never did have much luck long-term with women, and he was constantly telling Teddy to "get a girlfriend like everybody else." No matter how much Teddy protested that not everybody had a girlfriend, and that he only wanted to be Starman, not chasing the dream of Mrs. Kyle Theo Knight and sippy cups. Then his grandpa would usually chime in that some men are married to their craft, and it should be respected, admired, and encouraged! Once that ages-old argument would start between Jack and the senior Ted, Teddy could sneak away.

More than likely, the middle Knight was just showing some (misplaced) pride in his son for finally showing interest in a girl. Jack probably couldn't conceive of a single male under 50 not actively seeking a girlfriend. But Iris was just a nice girl, and she did deserve nice things, and, well, Teddy had to open his big mouth, didn't he? It's as simple as that.

'Adults complicate everything,' he thinks to himself.

Carefully shifting the box with holes in it in his arms, Teddy reaches up to ring the doorbell of the West house.

"Hey there....Teddy, right?" Wally's familiar with the group of super-kids that his kids hang out with, but he hasn't seen much of Teddy around lately. "You here to see Jai or Iris? Jai's out with Henry somewhere, but Iris is around." He laughs, "At least she was about two seconds ago. She never really does like to stand still for long."

He looks down at the box and raises an eyebrow. "Whatcha got there?"

"Yeah." Teddy looks down at the box, too, and grins dumbly. "It's a puppy for Iris!"

'That was way too enthusiastic.'

"I mean, if that's okay. Mr. West. Sir. Uh." He lifts the box a little higher. A pink and black snout is sniffing at the holes.

Wally blinks. "You got her a puppy." He states in a monotone voice. "You know Teddy...." he sighs, itching the back of his head, "A puppy is a big responsiblity...and that's a pretty big present for no special occasion."

And he thought he was going to have to look out for Henry. Note to self- keep an eye on the Knight boy.

"Oh... yeah. Of course."

Teddy's a grimace away from visibly pouting, but his face doesn't keep that expression for long. "Well, it's not no special occasion. I missed her birthday. And before that, a bunch of us were talking? And she said how cute this guy was, and I told her any guy that wanted to date her should take her to dinner, and buy her a puppy, movies and fairs, y'know, stuff like that? And THEN she asked if I'D get her a puppy, and I'm like, well, I dunno, but dad said I should. And--"

He lifts the box and a snout pushes up the lid, searching. "She's really cute and from good stock! She'll behave. I promise."

Wally sighs, placing a hand on his temples. "Teddy...did it ever occur to you that Iris might be kidding?" Hard to tell with her though. He's sure hoping that Iris was kidding.

"I'm sure she's very cute...but you have to train her and feed her and take her for walks and play with her and..." The little cold wet snout sniffing along the lid of the box doesn't really help.

Teddy blinks. Kidding? Do girls kid about that stuff? Seriously? That's probably how half the world's castles got built... Oops.

"She's already paper-trained. We just got new neighbors in the building, and they couldn't keep her because of a pet policy with new management-- except dad always said they wouldn't let us have dogs, but anyway-- so she's good and everything. And wouldn't it teach Iris patience because you can't super speed a dog and it's responsibility and scheduling and, uh, good stuff?"

Against his better judgement, Wally scratches the head of the little head that's now poking out of the box. "A puppy's a pretty big gift to get a girl that's just a friend..."

"She's not just a friend!" Teddy scoffs, offended. "She's a teammate, dude! --I mean, uh, sir."

Wally lets out a laugh, holding up his hands in self-defense. "Just...let me see if she's around, okay?" He'll deal with the puppy situation...later.

"Okay."

That was weird and unnerving. Oh well! Teddy starts whistling David Guetta at the puppy while he waits.

And in less than a half-second, Iris is at the door. "Hi Teddy!" A slight shade of pink touches her cheeks. "Dad said that you...wanted to see me..." she glances down at the box. "Is that a PUPPY?!!!"

"Yep! It's a girl. Happy birthday, Iris."

Teddy holds the box out with an awkward smile. The bow is proving to be a little too sloppily tied for the puppy's curious head, and an entire snout is now poking out.

When Iris opens the box the rest of the way, she'll find a rather happy and cuddly irish setter puppy.

"Oh yeah. She likes purple chew toys." From his backpack, Teddy recovers a bright purple squeaky bone. The puppy seems to recognize her toy, and Teddy hands it over.

"She's really good, too. I hope your dad doesn't get too upset. I mean, you mentioned a puppy an' everything... well, after I mentioned it. But I thought it was a good idea, so I hope she's good to you and doesn't chew on things and stuff. Not that she chewed on anyone else's stuff! Just her stuff. She, uh, likes chewing."

He mentally winces. Did he really just say that?
