It's not a road map, it's just a direction
It took less than five minutes for Marlow to realize that she was meant to be in the same place as the woman who stopped to pick her up. The spell she cast was supposed to take her where she wanted to go, but the closer they drove to the beach, the more certain she was that her spell had been hijacked to take her where she needed to be.

Something was coming, and Sydney and her daughter a part of it. Somehow. Ultimately very bad. Marlow didn't have all the answers. Hardly any answers at all, but she had a gut feeling and the voice in her head telling her to stay.

It would be helpful if Clea would give her a bigger hint than just a whisper that somebody was coming. Sure wouldn't be Santa because her luck didn't run that way.

"You know of any place around yours that I can stay?" she asked Sydney. "Somebody looking for a roommate for week or two?"

Sydney glanced over at Marlow. "I don't know any off hand, but you are welcome to stay with Zoey and me until you can find a place. There's couch space."

It was on the tip of somebody's tongue to say it wouldn't be long because there was something coming, but Marlow managed to not say it. Sydney was being nice and it would be bad luck to scare her over something she couldn't control.

"That would be great. I'll pay you."

"Not necessary. I'm just building up some good karma," she said and kept driving.

A cheer came from the back. Apparently Zoey was happy about having a guest.

"You have a quite a bit already," Marlow answered without thinking, Zoey's cheer surprising her. She was used to children not liking her much. Children were all emotion and didn't usually like the energy around her.

Syd smiled. "One cannot have too much good karma." She made a right at the next intersection. "Never know when it's needed."

"Ain't that the truth," Marlow muttered as she looked out the window. "Have you lived around here long?"

"No," Syd replied. "I grew up in San Francisco. Zoey and I moved down here around three years ago. My sister lives down here and we wanted to be closer to her."

"Auntie Bryn!" Zoey pinged in.

Zoey gave her an energetic nod. "Yes! I like to build sandcastles and play in the water."

"I've never made a sandcastle." Marlow's upbringing in the Dark Dimension didn't include a lot of things, but what she didn't know she couldn't miss. "Doesn't the sand get inside your clothes?"

"What about you? Where are you from?" Sydney asked.

"I'll show you how to build one!" If she wasn't strapped in a booster seat, she would have been bouncing up and down. "It does."

Marlow blinked. Where was she from? "I move around a lot," she hedged. "Seems like I'm sent where I'm needed and left without a handbook."

"I'd like that," she said to Zoey, turning a little in the seat to look at the child. Seatbelts? Didn't even register what those were and why she should be wearing one. "Though I'm not sure about the sand in my clothes."

Syd nodded. "Understandable. I know a few people that don't stay in one place long."

Zoey smiled. "Yay! That's why you change clothes."

Marlow had only the clothes she had on. Procuring new ones was not much of a problem. "I don't do anything harmful," she assured Syd. "I like to help out where I can."

"I'll give it a try," she told Zoey, "but the sand part sounds really scratchy."

"I believe you," Syd said. She had feeling that this woman was just lost. Lost didn't mean bad or evil. "Helping others is always good in my book. At least that's how we were raised and how I'm trying to raise Zoey."

"It's not too scratchy. It's more fun."

Marlow strove for Do No Harm, but sometimes it happened anyway. Clea said she needed more training and practice, but it didn't always turn out as Marlow hoped.

"That might be why I'm here," she said thoughtfully. "Things sometimes happen that way."

"Could be and until you figure out what you need to do, you have a place to stay." Syd looked over at her. Marlow wasn't carrying any bags or anything else. "I may have some clothes you can fit into. Otherwise, there's always the thrift stores."

"Can we go?" Zoey asked. She loved going to the store with her mother. Mom always bought her a small toy whenever they went.

"Not now," Syd said to her daughter.

Marlow was catching on to the Zoey dynamic. Zoey wanted to do everything. She might've been impressed with the lack of whining or cyring if she'd known that those were tactics many children used to get their way.

"Clothes aren't a problem. The problem is figuring out why. And who."

"I'm sure you will figure it out before long. Until then you are welcome to stay with us."

"Can I have ice cream?" Zoey asked.

"When we get home. We still have some in the freezer," Syd answered.

"Yay!"

"Thank you." Marlow took a copper coin from her jacket pocket, forgetting where she'd picked it up, and held it in her clenched fist for a moment before offering it to Zoey. It now glowed a dull gold color.

She sighed a little in relief and surprise that it didn't turn into something other than gold.

"Only gold," Syd muttered. Since her parents died, life had been a struggle when it came to paying bills and putting food on the table. "Zoey, what do you say?"

"Thanks!"

She recoiled a little at Syd's tone of voice, unsure of what she did wrong. Gold was still acceptable, she thought, and shiny enough to be a toy for Zoey. The teenager inside ignored Clea's voice and looked out the car window.

"You're welcome, Zoey."

Syd made a left and then pulled the car into a small parking lot. "We're here. It's not much and it's a bad part of the city, but it's home."

"Home has a protection all its own." And it would have more now, Marlow resolved, as long as she was with them. And more gold coins, if she could manage to transmute them into gold instead of something like banana flavored fluff.

"Thank you again for letting me stay."

Marlow got out the other side and stretched, looking around. She didn't see what was so bad about the neighborhood at first glance, but she didn't mind finding out.

"It seems quiet."

"It's not. Don't be surprised to hear gun shots in the middle of the night. Come on in," she said as motioned for her to follow. She put her key in the front door and opened it up.

Gunshots? Marlow took an extra moment to look around, searching her mind for a spell to protect them through the night.

She entered after Syd and Zoey, smiling at Zoey's bouncing.
