Who: Kirley Duke & Oliver Wood
When: Evening,  20th January
Where: Riverside, 10 miles from boat
Rating: PG to start
Summary: K's thinking too much, so went for a walk.
Status: Complete

The news in the Daily Prophet had left Kirley with a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach and he'd had to leave the boat behind to clear his head. He knew the news has affected Orsino; his best friend had gone quiet -always a danger sign- and retreated to beat the shit out of his drums. K had peeked round the door to check on him before leaving, but O hadn't acknowledged him, again this was ordinary when he was upset. For some reason he didn't like people to see him angry, Kirley on the other hand loved to yell at someone he was annoyed with. He had half a mind to march into the Ministry and kick up a fuss, but he didn't really think it would achieve anything in the long run. Instead he had posted on his journal, then headed out for some fresh air.

Walking had always helped him clear his head, sometimes it even managed to tire him out sufficiently enough to actually get some proper sleep. Hands in pockets and head down, he strode along the footpath beside the river, his usual bouncy walk was more subdued as his mind turned over the words of the article. Not only were they persecuting 'halfbreeds' and muggleborns, they were now against homosexuals too. Their laws were rapidly sending wizard society back to the dark ages. Next thing you knew you'd be sent to Azkaban for sodomy. Huffing out an annoyed sound, he shook a cigarette free of the pack, lit it with his wand and took a long drag, trying to out walk his thoughts.

Oliver had thrown his copy of the prophet into the fire before he even finished reading the first page. He knew the Ministry's new laws would change the lives of several of his friends and, if they decided to bring in their ridiculous law about homosexuals, himself. Running was the first thought that came to his head and was what had resultuted in him currently running along the riverbank.

One foot fell infront of the other as he continued to run, he wasn't even really paying that much attention to where he was going, thoughts running to quickly in his head. Living on the river meant that Oliver didn't really need to think about where he was running as it was a course that he ran quite often.

Not paying attention had it downsides though, it meant that he occasionally ran into things and today it seemed was one of those days. Oliver swore as he ran into someone, his quick reactions, thanks to years of quidditch, stopped them from falling to the ground as he grabbed the other person steadying them both.

Kirley was too busy watching his feet to notice what was going on around him so when someone collided with him, hard, he didn't get angry. A surprised squeak was all he managed before he felt himself falling and he expected to hit ground, flailing slightly, only to be caught and steadied by a strong grip. He latched onto the stability, taking a moment to make sure he really was right on his feet again.

Looking up though his hair where it fell across his eyes, he managed a shocked smile as he saw who he'd walked into. 'Lo Nimbus.' Oliver Wood, friend with lots of benefits. 'Sorry, wasn't paying attention.'

He was still holding on to the younger wizard and probably should let go, though he felt oddly reluctant to do so. 'You okay?'

Oliver swore under his breath as he caught the person he had bumped into. Without even looking at them he started to apologuise, "I'm so sor.." he paused as he looked down at who he had stopped from falling. "Hey K, me either, sorry," he grinned slightly, he hadn't seen the musician in a while.

Not having let go of Kirley, Oliver licked his bottom lip, "I'm good, well kinda. Somethings pissed me off this morning, hence I'm out here running," he paused, "so what brought you on a walk along the river?" he asked, not knowing if it was the same reason he was out running.

Kirley's hand slid from where he was holding Oliver's wrist to tangle his fingers with the Keeper's instead. His eyes showed recognition as Nimbus spoke of being pissed off that morning. K certainly knew what that felt like. He glanced around, suddenly realising how far he'd walked and how much the sunlight had faded. It was almost twilight, he'd need to head back soon.

'Oh.. the fucking Prophet.' He kicked at a stone, sending it into the river with a final sounding splash. 'I was so angry and O's been locked in his room all day hammering at the drums.' His hands flew to his hair and he twisted black strands through his fingers, a clear sign of anxiety from the guitarist. 'I just-'

He flopped down onto the bank, sitting on the grass and hugging his knees. 'I didn't know what to say to him. He's Muggleborn, you know? They're banning same sex marriages because of a decline in magical babies, but they're ignoring all the capable, brilliant witches and wizards born into muggle society.' He looked up at Oliver out of wide green eyes. 'It's fucking ridiculous.'

Oliver gently squeezed Kirley's fingers as they tangled together. He spotted the recognition in Kirley's eyes, figuring he knew what had pissed him off.

"Yeah that..." Oliver watched the stone fly into the water, thinking of how wizarding society seemed to be doing just that, sinking. The ministry appeared to want to go backwards, undoing all the good that previous miniters had done. Hearing Kirley continue Oliver nodded, "I'm not surprised O started attacking his drums," Oliver watched Kirley's hands flying to his hair, knowing just how much this was bothering the older man.

Oliver sat down behind Kirley, his legs either side of the older mans, arms winding around his waist. "I know, no doubt he is taking this really bad." He sighed and pressed a light kiss to Kirley's shoulder. "It is fucking ridiculous, they want to take us back to the Medieval ages. There are amazing muggle borns out there, O being one of them. The same as there are some amazing werewolves and other people. They just want a purist world and need to pull their wands from up their arses, though they are so deep they probably can't find them," Oliver paused, then blushed as he realised he began ranting.

A tiny smile crossed his face as he felt Oliver's fingers squeeze his. A comforting gesture as small as that was sometimes all it took to soothe his ragged nerves. Though if the Ministry got completely power crazed you probably wouldn't even be able to hug a member of the same sex in public.

His chest physically ached at the thought of Orsino being upset; he hated it. The drummer was his best friend and Kirley loved him a lot more deeply than he let on. He was perfect and the fact that the Ministry didn't see that really pissed Kirley off. So what if he was Muggleborn? He was still magical. The same went for his father, K didn't think he knew a smarter Wizard than his dad, or a better man.

Feeling Oliver settle behind him, he leaned back into the embrace, turning his head to rest against the taller man's shoulder. 'He is amazing... it isn't fair.' He snorted softly at Nimbus' rant, 'careful now, if you say that in public they'd probably arrest you.'

Oliver sighed softly as Kirley leant back against him. He hated that the usually happy and bubbly man was upset and other than hold him, Oliver had no idea how to deal with it. His owl feelings of anger, about the article, were pushed aside for now as he focused on the man that was sat between his thighs.

"That he is and no it really isn't fair. None of this is fair but the ministry seem to think just they know best and the truth is they have no fucking clue what is going on in the world as they are just wearing rose tinted glasses." Oliver pressed a light kiss to Kirley's shoulder.

Listening to the other Scot, Oliver couldn't help but chuckle. "It is the truth though. The next thing will be that muggleborns have to register where they are living and such. It's stupid elitism."

Oliver sighed once more and let his head fall forward until his forehead was resting on Kirley's shoulder. His fingertips tracing a light patetrn on the muscians thigh.

Kirley frowned at Mouthy's next words. What if the Ministry did decide to keep a register of Muggleborns, just like they did with Werewolves? What if they didn't stop there and started herding them together into designated areas like Fascists? Random examples from history popped into his head, making him sink his teeth into his lower lip. Sometimes he wished he hadn't gone to Muggle primary school; then he wouldn't know about such things.

Chewing on his lip, he felt his eyes stinging and closed them, pulling himself together for the time being. Instinct made him check his journal and he mumbled a soft 'oh no' when he saw that O was hungry. Stroking Olly's hair while he wrote back, K wondered aloud, 'do you want to come back to the boat? Or do your puppies need you?'

During his little rant, Oliver ran his hand up and down Kirley's thigh without really thinking about it. When they were together they were nearly always touching in some way, wether they were wrapped around each other or just holding hands.

Oliver looked down over Kirley's shoulder as he muttered under his breath. "Everything okay?" he asked, worried something had happened in the time it had taken Kirley to get so far from the boat. Closing his eyes as Kirley's fingers ran through his hair Olly sighed softly. "Polo will feed them, but they are in their outside run, well playpen kinda thing. I built it a little bit ago and they have a huge house with sofas and toys that's heated then a big fenced area with a protection over it to stop the rain and strong winds getting to them. So yeah, I'd love to come back to the boat." Oliver grinned.

"Oh I have a question, do you fancy mooring your house boat at the bottom of my garden for a while? I have spare rooms that you and O could steal if you get bored of the boat."

'I need to get some food on the way home.' Kirley replied to Oliver's question; upset that he'd wandered off without thinking properly about what Orsino needed. Yes, the drummer was thrashing his drums when K had left the boat. But that didn't mean he could be out for hours. 'Cheese for the rats and stuff to make fajita's with for O.'

He'd seen the puppies' outside home and nodded at Oliver explained they'd be okay. 'Good, I wouldn't want them to be neglected.' Slipping his journal away into his jacket pocket, he twisted round in Oliver's grip, till he was tangled thigh to thigh with the taller Scot. 'Wags might pout if we move away from his for too long.' He tilted his head, green eyes searching Olly's for a long moment. 'I'd like to be closer to you; but I'd need to check with O.'

Oliver nodded, "There is an okay shop close to me, owned by muggleborns, so they take both muggle and wizarding money," Oliver trailed off, thinking that if the ministry went much further, his little 'corner shop' wouldn't be there much longer. “They even have a stash of wizarding sweets under the counter; you just have to ask for them.”

“They won’t be I promise. I took them out for a run at six this morning. They like chasing ducks.” Oliver loosened his grip on Kirley as the other Scot began to wriggle round and face him. “Could do a month at mine then a month at his?” Oliver suggested, it wasn’t like he wanted to steal Kirley away from the world; he just wanted him to be that bit closer. Looking down into Kirley’s eyes Oliver nodded, “Of course, that is understandable. I would like to be closer to you too,” Oliver knew that Kirley and O came as a package; he also knew that O would always come first, but he accepted that.

“Shall we go find food for O?”

'Oooh we can get chocolate frogs and skittles at the same place!' Kirley allowed himself a small smile at the thought, even though he hadn't felt much like smiling since he read the news.

'Good.' Leaning up a little, he took Olly's face gently in his hands and kissed him softly. 'We'll work something out.' The idea of splitting their mooring time between the two places was a good one, but sometimes he and O just liked to drift along the river stopping at a different place each night.

Nodding in response to the question he sprang to his feet and tugged Oliver up with him. He trusted the younger man to apparate them to the shop. Mexican food and having friends all close by sounded like the perfect night to him.
