Some Things You Don't Want to Know
Kassia returned to the hotel she was sharing with Marrina, but it wasn't as quickly as she had made it seem like it would be.  Instead of being back in just a couple of hours it was near four in the morning when she made her way back into the room and smelling faintly of alcohol.  Her eyes were wide and her entire person seemed rattled.  She came into the room and sat down on the couch, the bag with evidence from Frost dropped on the floor as though it were the least of her concerns.

And for the moment, it was.

Marrina had been sitting on the bed, legs pulled up and looking a little nervous and tense.

"I was starting to get worried," she said. "Thank God you're all right."

"No, I'm not."

Kassi frowned and slumped a bit onto the couch.

"Dad's not behind things. Sebastian Shaw is. Marrina, is murder ever acceptable?"

Marrina frowned as she watched her sister.

"It... depends," she said, carefully. "If it's in self-defense or if it comes down to saving someone else..."

"It would be justice for someone else."

Kassia stood up and paced the room before punching a wall...and putting her entire arm through it.

"He sold my sister. He sold my sister." Her voice darkened and sounded disturbingly like their father's when he was angry.

"He did what?" Marrina gasped, her surprise doubled after Kassia's wallpunch.

She got up from her spot and went to stand near her sister, to hug her.

"Oh, God... I'm sorry..." she said, softly.

She had to be careful about this, talk Kassia down carefully from where she was.

"He needs to die for this, Marrina. He does. AND he's destroying Mom's stuff? No. No. You don't do this and expect to live. Tina is harmless! She's sweet! She's always been kind and trusting and..."

Kassia was shaking now, her voice getting darker by the second and her visage hardening as rage worked its way just beneath her skin.

"People who prey on the weak need to die."

Marrina held her sister tightly. "Kassia... you can't. No matter how horrible he is"--and he was, Marrina's royal blood was fairly boiling to shout something Latin--"you can't sink to his level."

"Then how do I obliterate his stain on my family!"

Kassia shouted, shaking a bit.

"How do I make him pay?"

Marrina took an involuntary step back, surprised at her sister's forcefulness. She didn't know she had it in her.

"There's... there's legal ways," she said, quickly. "Maybe not as satisfying... but he'll still pay."

"No, Marrina. He won't pay if this goes legal routes. He's Sebastian Fucking Shaw! He buys judges and police as a hobby! There has to be another way to deal with him." Her shoulders sagged. "There has to be."

Marrina frowned. Politics were way outside her usual domain, even with the books on them Namor had insisted she study.

"We... we should talk to Namor," she said at last.

"Probably not a bad idea," she agreed and while she was no longer shouting, her face still had that hard and slightly dangerous set to it, her voice still dark.

Marrina was still worried about her sister, though slightly less so than she'd been earlier.

Not that Namor would be any less dangerous an option, but... he could deal with that himself. Marrina felt responsible for Kassi.

"He's good at this kind of thing," she assured her sister. "He'll know what to do."

"Fine. Call him."

Kassi went back to pacing around the room.

Marrina nodded and went to their luggage, pulling out the small communications console they'd brought with them just in case there'd been an emergency.

It took a minute to boot up and another for her to find a secure channel.

Namor has just received word that the attacks he coordinated against Frost Industries were successful when the call comes in. He takes a deep breath, then goes to speak with his daughters.

"Marrina. This is a pleasant surprise, my darling. Are you well? Where is Kassia? I would like to tell you both about a new 'Save the Whales' promotion that I am thinking of having Oracle do." Namor says.

"That's... that's great," Marrina said, quietly, gathering her nerve. "We're okay. We... were worried about Kassi's sister and went to the States. Did a little investigating. We... think we know what's going on."

"Sebastian Shaw is attacking my mother's interests," Kassia blurted out. Her voice crackled with rage. "And I found out far worse things. Daddy...he hurt Tina."

Namor does not look pleased at Marrina's mention of them being in the United States. They were too close to his campaign against Emma. If either of them were hurt while those mercenaries did the work he paid them for...

"I see." Namor says simply, waiting for his elder daughter to speak, even as Kassia rushes in to fill the silence.

"Sebastian Shaw is the one behind the attacks? Yes, that...that would make sense, but it's just speculation." Namor says, considering her words as though he hadn't expected them.

"Unless either of you have some kind of proof that Shaw did what you're saying he's done, there is little I can do to stop him through legal channels." Namor says.

When Kassia mentions Tina, Namor's mind goes back to a far-off place from several years ago, to another girl who needed a father as badly as Kassia and was denied that and more by her mother.

"Kassia, I want you to calm down." Namor says, mentally blinking at himself for telling anyone to calm down.

"Tell me what you mean when you say Shaw hurt Christina." Namor commands.

Marrina looked over to Kassi, trying to figure out what she should say here. She put a reassuring arm around her sister. "It's okay," she said. "Take it slow and tell him what you found out."

Kassi started shaking again, though it seemed less from rage and more out of uncontrollable hurt. Her father telling her to calm down helped somewhat, but the issue she was dealing with was beyond calming down over.

"He...he assaulted Tina." She let the sentence hang for a moment so that Namor would get the meaning without her having to say the words so bluntly. "And then he sold her to his friends for six years."

She clenched her fists in her lap. It was taking everything to not punch the wall again.

It takes Namor a moment to gather the meaning of Kassia's words, but when he does, he can't help but feel a great wave of hurt for the young girl that Christina was when he left her and the woman that she had to grow up to be, under the thumb of that egomaniac.

His hurt and horror, however, slowly give way to a cold fury that goes deeper than nearly anything he has ever felt in his life. That could have been his little girl. It could have been Marrina, if the Smallwoods had not been the good people he'd learned of in all of his research upon them.

But the reasons for Kassia's and Christina's suffering lead back to one woman.

"Kassia, Marrina, I want you both to go home and not worry about this any further. You two have gone above and beyond what was necessary to aid Emma. I'm going to call her right now and tell her everything, and then she and I will make Sebastian Shaw pay for his crimes. I do not wish any ill to come onto Alpha Flight in this, so it is best that you two return to Canada and do not speak of it to anyone." Namor says.

"Not even Christina. She has suffered enough, but I will speak to her and let her know that I am here for her as well. I may even ask her to join you so that she is not connected to what will happen. Can I count on the two of you?" he asks.

It had been even worse than Marrina had thought. She felt her blood grow cold and her anger turn white hot. No one should ever...

She wanted to do something, anything. She wanted to hit something, like she had never wanted to hit something before. But that was also the extent of her plan. She had literally no idea how to proceed past this.

"Yes, Father," she said. "You can count on us."

She wanted to stomp on Sebastian Shaw's spleen. She wanted to set him on fire. She wanted to sick Charlie the Kraken on him and string his entrails down the eastern seaboard. But her father said he'd handle it. He'd call mom. He'd handle it. Grudgingly, she nodded.

"Yes, Daddy. You'll take care of Tina, right?" Not talking to her sister was the worst of this.

"Yes. I will send my people to protect her tonight, so that Shaw cannot come near her, Kassia. I promise you that." he tells her.

"Kassia, I must ask you something, and I want you to be wholly honest with me, no matter what you think my reaction will be." he says, steeling himself to ask his next question. If Shaw had done anything to Kassia like what he did to Christina...he might actually summmon a Kraken to wipe out New York, just to make sure that Sebastian Shaw didn't live to see another sunrise.

"Kassia, has Sebastian Shaw ever attempted to do to you what he did to your sister?" Namor asks.

Marrina steeled herself against the answer, trying to hold down any rage preemptively. She had only known her sister for a short time, but she had become quite important to her.

If Shaw had... she didn't like to think of what she might do.

Kassi was silent for a moment as she thought about her father's question. It was a valid one and Kassia rifled through her memories to see if anything was inappropriate where Shaw had been concerned. There was only one thing that chewed at her, a half-forgotten afternoon when Shaw had her alone in his study, playing with her hair and spreading compliments as though they were jam. Tina had walked in and was instantly angry. She'd yanked her sister back by the arm and told her to get out before turning to look at Shaw, her voice without fear as she told him to leave Kassia alone.

At the time, Kassi hadn't understood. Now she did and as the memory clicked in with meaning, she felt her chest go cold from the inside out.

"No. Tina wouldn't permit it. He never even had a chance to try, Daddy."

A lie of sorts. But Kassi had learned from a master how to make the truth appear cleaner than it was.

"He never hurt me. I was safe."

Namor's expression visibly relaxes as Kassia tells him that Shaw never had a chance to hurt her, because Christina watched out for her. But no one watched out for Christina, not even her own mother.

What kind of woman would let that happen to her own child?

"I am glad to hear that, Kassia. More than you will ever know. I am going to get started on getting Tina to safety, and helping your mother. Go home with your sister and wait for my instructions." Namor says, looking between his daughters.

"Marrina, I thank you for watching you for your sister and keeping her safe. I am grateful to you for helping her with all of this, though I know it hasn't been easy for you, all these changes. I will make it up to you." Namor says.

"Be safe, both of you. I will come and see you as soon as I am able." Namor says, before switching off the connection.

Once the call is terminated, Namor orders his General to active Sleeper Cells 12 and 17 ready them for action. When they arrive, he provides the first team of six Atlanteans rings and gives them their orders.

"Bring me Emma Frost, alive. She need not be unspoiled." Namor says darkly.

He looks to the second team.

"Find this address. The young woman who lives there is to kept from harm at all costs. Any one who tries to get to her that is not myself, Princess Marrina or Kassia is to be driven off.

If they will not go peacefully, then deal with them." Namor commands.

Marrina was not, by nature, a very good liar. Deception did not come easily to her and she had been raised by simple, honest people.

But even she could tell there was more to Kassi's story than met the eye. She would pull her sister into a hug, if allowed.

"I'm sorry," she said.
