Family Demon Hunting Road Trips!
Bumping along a dirt road in  what, to any sane person, was probably the most outlandish and least safe car ever, Martin looks out the window at all the wheat fields. Now surely somewhere in there was a demon. There had to be! The detector in the car said so! Granted, at the last stop it had lead them to the ghost of some old lady that was very dull, and her dog which had just been noisy, but still...it should work eventually. He needed to tell Marlow how much he liked this car again. Charmed to the brim meant: bonus! He could touch stuff. And hey, that was a rare thing with him.

Anyway, they were better than the Ghostbusters. You had to call those guys. Nobody had called them!

The Great Demon Hunting Road Trip continues!

Marlow had worked on this car a long time, nearly a month. She'd layered spell over spell over spell to make it able to drive itself, and teach her in the process. It was sea green, her favorite color, and it sparkled in the sun. Right now it was so sparkly that it blinded the birds overhead.

It was meant for family trips, and Martin was always up for an adventure. To make it even more fun, she'd given it DPS, demon positioning system. It was supposed to take them to demons so they could kill them!

It kinda sorta worked. It found supernatural things. That dog was really noisy. She'd tried to step on it.

"Why do you think demons even come out this way? It seems pretty boring."

"Maybe so they can eat people in peace an-ah!-d quiet?" Those bumps were hard to get used to. But it was still the best road trip ever. The DPS had actually found them demons. Tiny talkative ones that were more like leprechauns, but still...it worked.

"Actually, why do people even come this way? There's only wheat..."

Talkative demons were the worst.

"Yeah." The road bumped really hard and she bounced in her seat. "If they wanted bread, they could go to the store and buy some. Maybe it's a wheat eating demon out here. Hopefully there's a town soon."

"A wheat eating demon would be boring though...I mean, even non-magic teammates could deal with that. I hope the next one is real big! I was looking up spells to try, and the bigger the better." The next bump has him almost hit his head against the roof.

"So what sound was it again that meant demons?" He taps the DPS with his hat hoping to make it do what he wanted.

"I tried a laugh, but it didn't work to well, so I used a fog horn. It confuses them because there's no ocean around here." At the time she thought it a brilliant idea. /She/ would look for an ocean if she heard one.

"Do you have the map? Is there a town nearby? We'll need to get some gas for the car and wash off the dust." The car was practically alive if Marlow's efforts were anything to go on.

Maybe the Defenders should've found her a pet.

"That's a good idea! They'll be looking for boats then instead." Marlow was pretty smart in his opinion, and that the car actually worked was proof of that for him.

"Yep!" He digs into his hat, going past elbow deep, which might look odd to a normal person considering the hat wasn't anywhere near that tall, and fishes out an enchanted map. "Umm...there should be one soon I think?" The map adjusts itself midair as he squints at it. "Has a stupid name though so maybe it's not real and just a joke. I wonder who names these things..."

Marlow looked up at the map hovering between them and blocking the windshield. She took her hands off the wheel and tugged at the corner to bring it closer so she could get a good look at where he was squinting. The car continued on, driving much better than it did when she was trying to be in control.

"Fearnowville. That's weird. It's like a sign not to go there. I bet they have really good hamburgers. All weird places are supposed to have good food." Because, of course, that's what the TV said.

"Maybe it's a park like Disneyland but for weird stuff."

"Really? Is it only weird places on this plane because all the other ones are weird and have no burgers." At the mention of a theme park Martin peaks around the map to see out the windshield, "That'd be so cool. Maybe a theme park with a bunch of demons. I hear they like that stuff." Sadly he sees no tall rides in the distance, only more wheat.

"You know, we need pictures of our demon hunting. People always take pictures when they go on road trips."

"I didn't bring a camera. We'll buy one at the store in town." Martin had some great ideas. She thought he was pretty smart for his age. Families had picture albums to save their memories. They needed one too. She would make copies of it for Clea and Doctor Strange to show them they were putting their magic to good use.

"It's supposed to be small mom and pop places, and holes in the wall." Personally, she would never eat anything that came out of a hole cut in a wall, but Martin might and she would get to see if it was safe. "I'm getting hungry, too. Let's get to Fearnowville as soon as we can."

In response to her words, the car picked up speed.

Martin nodded along. To any passer-by he'd look like a sixteen year old, despite still being thirteen, the result of a magic adventure mishap. This was on top of spending the three years since his powers manifested secluded with Dr. Strange and only dealing with magic...well, that doesn't promote normal social development either.

"I never knew why they called it that. Because the moms and pops have their kids working there too." He's suspended in mid-air for a moment as the speeding car hits another bump and nearly hits his head.

Martin gives up on watching out the window, having determined a while ago there was nothing interesting, and instead focuses on following the moving sea-green dot, he was quite proud of getting the colour right, on his map.

"Do you have any money? I don't carry any." It wasn't practical considering not paying attention while touching any might result in the money turning into something else. He's pretty sure he has some, he vaguely recalls something about the Thunderbolts getting salaries.

Thanks to Sydney, Marlow had money with her all the time. She had been given a leather fold that carried a credit card, her Defenders card, and one hundred dollars in twenties. The wallet fit neatly in her front pocket and was also spelled, one spell to keep it from getting lost and another to keep everyone out unless she wanted it to happen.

"I have money," she assured Martin. Her stomach rumbled. She made the attempt to wrestle control of the car from, well, the car and pushed her foot down on the gas pedal. It resisted her efforts to hit ninety. "We'll get supplies and find a place to spend the night. Maybe they've seen some demons in town."

"Okay, you can take some from my account. Someone made one, I don't know how you get money from it though, you'll have to ask Anya or Bea. They know this stuff." He'd let Marlow handle anything that involved actual physical contact with people or objects, including paying.

"I hope they tell us if they have," he says while the engine protests against the attempt speed up. "I don't think this car likes us." At least according to the map it wouldn't be much farther. He was looking forward to these supposedly good burgers.

"Sydney said if I was going to have a car I had to learn how to drive by the rules, so I spelled the rules into it so it would teach me," Marlow said with a hint of grit in her voice. "It doesn't like to break the speed rule, but I'm hungry."

The car relented and let the speedometer creep up a little more.

"The car will take care of us," she told Martin. "And find demons."

The bed and breakfast they checked out after lunch had more runes carved into the picket fence surrounding the property. Around the small town, runes were discreetly etched into curbs and carved into trees, set into building near the eaves and front entrances. Once they realized there were more, they saw them everywhere. Always tiny and unobtrusive, but still present. Marlow realized her car needed a lot more work if it could miss a place marked with dormant spells. They had to be dormant, she reasoned, or very old. She felt only a brief shock of weak energy when she touched one on a fence slat.

Everywhere they went, people stared. Hard. As if Marlow and Martin were aliens. Maybe they were. No one smiled or talked when greeted.

They eventually made their way to the square in the center of town where a gazebo stage dominated the park like area. The sun was beginning to set and more people arrived. Marlow hoped things were about to start so they could get on with their demon hunting.

Martin leaves the touching of runes to Marlow but quietly wonders about them. Dormant spells? Maybe this had been a magic town! That'd be cool especially since it usually meant the spells were there to keep demons out...or increase the power of the ones inside. Either way a good sign. If only they weren't probably old spells...

Shame though.

While people gather, Martin can't help but be hopeful they'll find a demon here. The DPS, staring, runes and the fact that this was the most promising location by far all helped the feeling of excitement that was building. He didn't even care that parties meant more people being too close to him, which is why he usually hated these things.

This road trip was looking even better now.

Despite the number of people showing up, they really weren't that crowded. People smiled at them, still staring, but didn't come within touching distance. Maybe they had a phobia about outsiders. It would explain the staring, but not the runes. She'd have to touch at least one person to see if they were spelled into acting funny and she'd have to be aggressive about it.

Another odd thing occurred to Marlow.

No kids here. We're the youngest people we've seen today. How weird is that?

Martin blinks in surprise and looks around to be sure.

So...I'm the youngest in the whole place?

Granted, he was usually the youngest in most situations but to be the youngest in the whole town? This was only getting weirder.

Perfect.

I so bet there's demons. Or at least magic.

He can barely stop from bouncing on his feet and shoots Marlow an excited grin. Perhaps someone with an actual sense of danger might be nervous, but it wasn't like he had much of one.

There's magic all right. She spotted an empty park bench and motioned Martin over to sit and watch the crowd. Flopping down on it, she saw another rune etched in the wooden seat.

Look, there's another one. I wonder what would happen if we gave it a little push.

Only one way to find out...

And without further ado he gives the rune a firm tap with his hat. Sense of danger? What was that?

WAIT! Marlow's caution was loud enough to be heard outside their heads, but too late to keep Martin from activating the rune. Dark light shot out from it, then engulfed the bench. It spread down to the ground and then across the grass to encompass the entire square.

She jumped up and away from bench. "I said a /little/ push!"

They now had the open and unwavering attention of everyone present.

Then he notices the countless staring eyes. Oops.

A hat in the hands of crazy strong magic!

Marlow blinked back at the crowd. Did they all seem...bigger?

"I think we found our demon," she said softly. "I think we found them all."

Okay well not like he always took that into account. Still, innocent enough tap he'd insist.

Really, at the start of this he'd thought, best case scenario, that maybe they'd find a large demon. Or a handful of somewhat smaller ones. Really he wasn't too picky.

But at the crowd in front of them he can only stare in shock for a moment before whispering back. "...Apparently we're better at that than we thought..."

One by one, the normal faces began to change, revealing demonic ones.

"The DPS worked!" She probably shouldn't be so elated at her success in the face of the downside of DPS. It found a whole town of demons. They might not live through it.

The crowd didn't just move toward them. It surged in their direction.

"Nice! " The victorious fist pump and jump that follows only indicates that his sense of danger? Nope, hasn't kicked in yet. Perhaps later.

"It worked it worked it worked! You're a genius Marlow!" He was completely ignoring the fact that a slight flutter in the gauge meant a demon town. But those were details. There was demon hunting to be done!

And he had so many spells to try.

"And this is why we should've brought a camera," he says as he feels his hands crackle with magic from all the excitement of their search being successful. Now which spell first...
