Burns suck
He's glad Aya is away at college.  She shouldn't have to see his scars or smell the ointment he's long been sick of.  The nanites were confused by the EMP pulse the blast carried and he had to shut them down, which slowed his healing and made him do something only sobering up or failure ever could - feel his age.  The nanites keep him biologically almost as young as his wife, but in this rehabilitation process, it's not enough.  the nanites are not responding to his new instructions and the frustation and fatigue are starting to wear on his well-concealed optimism.  He keeps repeating the mantra - I will be healthy when I see my grandchild.  I've earned it.  Knowing Anya that grandchild was going to be very far off because there will always be more for him to do, and he will not ever pressure her oon the subject.  There have been larger problems then even the battle in the stock market for his own company.  there have been bigger villians, but whoever did this managed to find his Achelles' Heel and ally him or herself with Tony's worst enemies - time and his own body.

He sighs and tries a new code.

"It would not hurt you to take a break once and awhile," Natasha said as she kissed his cheek and set a cup of fresh coffee down next to the keyboard.

Though she wished he would take it easy and let his body heal, she knew he wouldn't. He was a workaholic like she was. If not more. Almost four months of being laid up probably felt like four years and Natasha would give him space to get back into the thick of things. She did once and awhile encourage him to take a break and take it a little easier, but she wasn't going to nag.

"Who, me?" Despite the light tone, he's tense; more tense then normal.

"Actually I was talking about the other workaholic I know. The one I married. You know, the mad genius with wonderful assets? He might get a little jealous if he knew about you." She joked and tried to keep things on the light side. The last thing she wanted was for him to see how much she worried about him.

"Mmmm, so..." He turns on the bedroom voice. "Is he the jealous type?"

"Hrm, I don't know. You tell me."

The spy in her couldn't help but to look at the screen to see what he was working on. Computer code. One area that was a bit over her head. She could break into computers, but she couldn't program them. "Anything interesting?"

"Oh, he probably is if he's smart." He tries to shrug it off, but he has tells. "Nanite code. It's going slowly."

"One of the smartest people I know," she said with a small smile.

She sat down in an empty chair next to him. She took one of his hands in hers. She wanted to tell him to take it easy and not push himself, but there was that nagging thing. Not to mention she'd be a total hypocrite for doing so. She was just as bad as he was when it came to pushing herself after an injury.

"Anything I can do for you?" She smiled. "Or to you?"

He actually stops and rubs his face. Years, before he would have brushed her hand away and kept working. He's a genius, but it took him awhile to actually get smart.

"Tasha..." He squeezes her hand. "You know, it hurts," he admits. "The company, my legs, the nanites -" He gestures to the screen. "Things not working. But -" He turns back to her and moves that same hair through his hair. "It's not you. It's not Anya." He smiles. "It's not even that alien kid that keep taking over the flat screen TV and hits buttons all day...and it's not the Avengers."

She smiled and brought his hand up to drop a kiss on his knuckles. "It's good to know that, Anthony." It really was. There are always doubts in her mind. The relationship, the marriage, the kids, but little reassurances like that went a long way. A very long way.

"I know all of this is hard, but we're all here for you. What is it that our daughter says? United we stand, divided we cause more chaos, or something like that? You tell us what you need or need us to do and we'll do our best." They weren't a Norman Rockwell family, but they were family and when it came down to it, family was always there for each other.

He winces. "I love that kid. She's God's plague of humility. I can almost see Thor going to some bringer of souls of something and going 'See yon mortals! They needest a kick in the teeth. Send down a lass filled with the sense her parents lack and with a tongue of mono-filament...'Wait, they wouldn't know what the hell that was." He slumps a little.

"Just be patient with me. I'm not patient with me. I'm learning and - I hate it."

"I will agree with you there. She is some sort of divine justice on both of us." Natasha smiled. "She's a great kid, they all are actually." Natasha was still trying to figure out how that happened. It had to be some sort of joke the universe was playing.

"You've done a great job with her. I know I don't tell you that nearly enough."

Her head bowed for a moment before she looked at him. "I will as long as you're patient with me." Maybe if they remembered that, they could get this right this time around. "That's all I ask."

"Now that's incentive if I've ever heard any," she said with a wink. "Get better and we'll see how easy patience can get."

There was something she wanted to talk to him about, but...that's right. Now she remembered. "You have a birthday coming up, Mr. Stark. What would you like to do? Might as well mention it now before the kid plans something for you."

"We'll see what we can do about those," she said as she made a mental note to mention it in passing to Anya about the nanites. Tony wouldn't ask her for help.

"But I think to celebrate we'll have a nice quiet family dinner out somewhere." Though family dinners were always far from quiet. "You, me, the kids and if Anya wants, she can bring Steve along." Yeah, she was still wrapping her brain around the fact her daughter was dating Clint's kid. Still, it could have been worse.

"Vodka is banned from the table." He's had it with those dinners.

He raises an eyebrow. "How's your brain doing with our daughter and that thought?" Ooooh, Tony remembers the circumstances meeting Hawkeye all right.

"You won't hear an argument from me on that issue." Strange. Four months without a drink and she didn't miss it.

"She's happy and as weird of a thought as it is, I'm not going to say anything or do anything about it. Unless of course he hurts her or breaks her heart." She shrugged. "It could be worse."

"How are you with it?" She remembers that along with all the fights and arguments Tony and Clint had through the years.

He frowns. "Come to think about it...Did you stop drinking?"

He has to laugh. "Did our daughter actually find a way to make you squeamish?" He looks at the ceiling. "I found you on the job. She works all the time. Clint's a good parent out of sheer effort. I'll bet he's either amused or...something."

"More or less." She wasn't going to tell him that she was too worried about him to think about having a drink. She shrugged. "Just haven't wanted a drink."

"I'm not squeamish about it," she defended. "It's just weird." Natasha chuckled. "I bet he is. I'd say we should have dinner with Clint and Bobbi, but you don't need to be arguing with Clint the whole time."

He wraps a strand of hair around his finger. "Thank you." He's not as bad as he used to be. It doesn't bother him that she likes her alcohol, but he's still more comfortable not having it around.

Mmmmhmmm..."Who me? Argue?"

She smiled. "You're welcome. Yes, you. We used to have a betting pool about how long it would take you and Clint get into an argument."

"I love you. I know I need to say it more often."

"I am going to go workout a bit before bed. I think my ass may have gotten bigger from sitting around so much." She stood up and kissed his forehead. "Don't stay up too late. You have physical therapy in the morning."

"What? I sat in a chair for almost three months. My ass is bound to get bigger because of it." She felt softer than normal and it meant she had to spend more time in the gym. "What do you think?" she asked as she turned around to show him.

"I'm afraid Ms. Romanov," he replies, his voice, just a little higher pitched then it normally is. "That my calibration tools are a little uncalibrated at the moment. A completely non-scientific assessment says the world's most perfect ass if still in your possession..."

She laughed and turned back around to kiss him. "Don't ever change." Her brow wrinkled in thought for a moment. Ms. Romanov. She had gotten so used to being called Mrs. Stark that Ms. Romanov now seemed strange.

"Heal up and I'll let you do a hands on assessment."

He never dared ask her about taking his name. She was who she was and the thought she would like "Mrs. Stark" would actually floor him.

He clears his throat and maneuvers his chair towards the door. Before he's there, he stops. "You know," he remarks. "Last time I was in this chair and you were staying with me we got Anya out of the deal."

That got a long pause. While it was true and things did happen that way...no. He couldn't. Could he? Sure it came up the day of the bombing, but...she had to be imagining things. Right?

"I suppose you're right," she finally said. It was all about she could say. She wanted to ask if he was suggesting something, but the words would not come out.

He was actually thinking 'what kind of trouble do we get into now,' but...that pause made him think about what that sounded like. Would she? Would it kill the good thing they had going? Was he too chickenshit? Was that really how he wanted to spend his retirement?

In the end, all he could think to do was wheel himself away, lost in his own thoughts as well.

Why did she suddenly feel like she just dodged a bullet? She let the breath she didn't realize she had been holding out.

While it wasn't an idea she was totally opposed to, it was one that would mean a huge change in life and she wasn't sure she was ready for another one.

To be honest right now she was enjoying the relative quiet life with Tony.

The two of them hadn't had much time to focus on each other in the past. Now the kids were mostly grown and could more or less fend for themselves. They didn't need noses wiped, diapers changed, or Tasha and Tony to dress them. They were out of the house more than they were there so in essence it was just Tony and Tasha.

Maybe in a year or two.

Besides, she'd have to be ready to hear from her kids on the matter and right now she didn't want to hear it.

"Don't forget about what I said about staying up too late," she called after him.
