Evil twins?
Part of every young person's education involved practicing what they were studying, and young mages were no exception. Dr. Strange was using the Sanctum for something and the training room at HQ was still recovering from whoever had used it last. So Martin was stuck with using the other HQ rooms, and since he needed more space for this, he'd set up in the living room, moving the sofas out of the way to make space.

On the floor of the living/rec room was a massive seal he'd drawn on and was concentrating very hard to put the finishing touches on at the moment.

"Hey, Martin!" Jack pokes his head into the room, at ceiling level. "I'm going out for ice cream. You want to come?"

Martin frowns in concentration, not looking up from his work on the seal. "Can't, I'm working on a spell."

"What kind of spell?" Jack crawls further into the room, munching on a piece of pizza as he stares at the scribbles all over the room.

He traces more lines with a gloved finger, leaving glowing blue lines as he goes. "It's complicated," he sighs in frustration, not interested in explaining it at the moment since it took a lot of concentration. "It's a special type of portal spell is all." He hoped Jack wouldn't get in the way or distract him more, this might mess up, and he was already iffy when it came to control even if he had been showing some improvements.

"What kind of portal? Where does it go?" He plucks a pepperoni off the slice, eating it separately, settling in to sit cross-legged, rooted to the ceiling.

"What else have you been doing lately?"

The questions were annoying to get while he was working, and rather distracting. "It goes wherever I want it to go, and it's a portal for different universes but so that it only works on one side," he explained, a little frustrated as he had to go over a part that he'd messed up a bit due to Jack distractions. "But don't stay too close or stuff might happen," he frowned and adjusted his gloves, stretching out his hands before he'd start the spell.

"What kind of universes? Is there one where we're all, like, animal people? Or tiny and super-deformed like on Super Buddies?"

He descends on a line to get a closer look, but doesn't touch.

"There's a universe for everything," he grumbles, clearly exasperated by the questioning, but closes his eyes and puts his gloved hands down on a certain part of the seal, not seeing Jack descend for a closer look.

The seal taking up the whole room bursts with light and the crackling sound of magic as the blue magic rises up from the lines and swirls about the center, almost like a tornado of magic, rising up to the ceiling and...running into the young man hanging from the ceiling.

All at once the magic that comes into contact with Jack recoils in as loud a manner as possible, springing away and abandoning the tornado form to dive straight back at the seal on the floor, exploding on impact and filling the room with magic blue smoke.

First and foremost, Martin is angry that Jack got in the way and messed up his spell but that quickly goes on the backburner since now he had to worry if all his magic had done something to his teammate. Using magic on teammates probably broke a rule, and he didn't want to get in trouble.

"Jack?" Martin coughed amid all the smoke, unable to see the other boy. He was about to call out again when he freezes.

The mind scan he was in the middle of doing to see where Jack was had picked up...two other minds. Ones that felt very familiar yet just slightly odd.

Oh no.

Two voices cut through the smoke.

"I'm right here, Martin!"
"I'm right here, Marty."

It's the same voice, and almost the same words, but... not the same. One of them sounds typically uncertain and alarmed, and the other is... sharper. Not just more confident and aware, there's definitely that, but sharp like the edge of a dagger, and just as friendly.

"Well... isn't this special." The sharp voice continues, laughing gently.

"Don't call me Marty." The frown could be heard.

Martin blinked. He'd been about to say that! And oh dear, the spell had backfired hadn't it? And now there were two Jacks and two...hims.

As the smoke cleared the two thunderbolts would come face to face with...themselves.

"Oh hello," said the other Martin, who wore a black dress shirt instead of white and a grey vest instead of the usual black. He still had the hat though, at least there was that. But his eyes were different, they glowed bright blue with magic, something that he usually only let happen to him during spells but it seemed to be the usual state for this guy.

Jack...you made the portal go the opposite way

It's entirely possible that other-you was casting something on his side!

Funny, that's just what I was going to say.

The other Jack was similarly costumed, but in photo negative. His face was exposed. He was more angular than the Jack Martin knew, less of the rounded features and shaped jaw that made him look... well, heroic.

The other Jack surveys the surroundings. "Man... what a dump. Hard to believe there's a room in any version of headquarters that doesn't have a gun-rack and a liquor cabinet."

Hardl- I can hear you, you know.

Martin gritted his teeth at both the alternate versions butting into what should've been a private mental conversation. While his features looked largely the same in the weird version, the other Jack did look different. He supposed it made sense given the nature of his powers but it was still odd to look at.

The other Martin leans back on the disc he's floating on and casually shrugs as he looks around. "It doesn't seem like they have the really destructive defense spells on either. That's lame. What's the point of magic defenses if you don't put up something that can fry intruders?"

The correct Martin bites his lip and glares, he wasn't going to put up lethal spells, that wasn't allowed! Oh great, how was he going to put these two back where they belonged now?

"It's a sad, sad state." Other Jack shrugs, chuckling. "Come on... let's go check out what's fun around here." He starts walking out of the room, before stopping and looking at the native Martin over his shoulder. "Oh, and Mad Hatter, if you're going to use telepathy, maybe be smart enough not to use it on the only other person there's two of at the moment. You'll give yourself a headache."

Jack just puts his hands to his head. "Oh man... Anya and Bea's gonna be so mad at you, Martin..." He looks at Other Martin. "And that guy sounds way too much like Kelly."

The native Martin's own eyes glow a dangerous blue at the comment as he seriously considers zapping the Jack. It wasn't this Jack so there should be no rules against it...

But he refrained for the moment just so he had time to plan before he had to fight these two. "And you're even more annoying in that universe, but I don't want to know what Kelly is like in that one. It'd be weird," he frowns then registers the first part. "What? Why mad at only me?! You're the one who got too close and caused the spell to backfire! I told you not to get close and you didn't listen!" Argh!

In the meantime the other Martin had teleported off to explore the HQ with the other Jack. "I hope he at least put the fun spells on his own room. Let's check the kitchen, I want to see if my exploding stove is here too. That time you blew off your arm using the first one was fun."

It doesn't take Other Jack long to reach the kitchen, Native Jack hot on his heels. "What the hell's with all the ice cream sandwiches? Where's the frozen yogurt? Man, some universes..." He starts pitching items over his shoulder, in search of something deemed palatable.

"Hey, stop that right now!" Native Jack starts grabbing things before they splatter or break. "I don't care if you're from an evil universe, you're just a jerk!"

"'Evil'?" His double stops, and turns around, taking in the native version. "Hmm..." He gives him a calculating stare. "Brighter primary color on top, highlighting the face and arms... rounder features..." He looks around. "A distinct lack of proper defensive measures...

Hey Marty! I think this is one of those worlds where the good guys don't kill!" Alternate Jack just about bursts out laughing.

"Y...you shut up!" Native Jack sputters for a response, trying to muscle past him to put away the frozen things before they start melting.

Still fuming at Jack, Native Martin teleports to the kitchen to see weirder Jack raiding the fridge. "Don't touch my stuff! And nobody eats frozen yogurt anyway." Yeah, he liked this Jack even less than the normal Jack. Much less.

The other Martin has finished his short tour of the kitchen while sitting on his disc and frowns. "It's a normal kitchen...why?" So much lost potential there. At alternate Jack's comment, his eyebrows go up. "Really?" He turns to Martin. "I get no killing magic people, magic people are better, but...even no killing or hurting non-magic people? Come on...they don't matter you know." This Martin's manner was rather similar to the normal Martin, with his boyish shrugs and way of looking at things and explaining, there wasn't anything sinister about him, he just had disregard for anything not-magic ramped up to 11.

"I mean...only reason I hang out with Jack is because he's great for testing out spells. You can blow him up and he won't die! Just reform after a bit. Well, if he couldn't he'd probably be dead and then I wouldn't hang out with him, he'd make a really annoying ghost don't you think? But anyway, see?" At the last part, Martin shot a mystic bolt at the Jacks, large enough that at that close range it'd at the very least hit one of them if not both.

Native Jack screams and dives out of the way, as his alternate is struck squarely by the spell. A third of his body is ripped apart, the rest of him standing there, still holding a jar of pickles.

"I was busy, Marty."

The other Jack's head is sitting on the other side of the room... talking.

"Oh... oh I think I'm gonna puke... can I puke? Is that a thing I can do?" The color has drained from Native Jack's face.

Native Martin blinked in shock. He'd obviously thought about zapping Jack before but his wouldn't have been that strong...more of a zap than...well taking out a third of him. The prospect of zapping Jack looked suddenly very different after watching an alternate him literally blow a hole in the guy.

"You can multi-task just fine, sheesh," the other Martin rolled his eyes.

Martin looked to his Jack, who was looking awfully pale. "I...don't know. But not here please, there's already enough to clean up. Can't you...reform? You can do that right? I thought you could..."

"Well I don't know about yours, but I guess we can find out," the other Martin shrugged and shot another mystic bolt, this time at Native Jack specifically before turning to other Jack. "And pickles? Eww, why pickles? You couldn't find anything else?"

"It's the principle of it. At least you just burst me this time instead of vaporizing... takes a lot of frozen yogurt to replace that much biomass." Alternate Jack whistles, calling to his arm, tossed to another corner of the kitchen. "Oi! Here boy, this way."

The arm shudders, then spasms to life, crawling across the kitchen to the head. It grabs it at the neck, and.. the head slithers across the kitchen like a nagha, rejoining the rest of his body. "Does get the kinks out, though..." he comments, rolling his neck from side to side. He shoots out a few weblines to grab his stray bits, subsuming them back into his form. "Ah... there we go."

Native Jack dives out of the way of the next bolt. "Stop that!" There's some panic in his voice. "I... I don't know if I can do that.." He looks at his double, still horror-stricken.

"What? Professor Mom never taught you? Man, what have you even been doing around here?"

Alternate Martin just shrugs, clearly not giving much care to the 2/3 Jack or his complaints. He's about to shoot another bolt to the other Jack when he stops, giving the native Jack an odd look. "You don't know? Do you just not...ever test your powers? Wow...I thought Jack wasn't the brightest but you're..."

Native Martin frowns at his alternate self. "Stop that, just leave him alone." Besides, he didn't want to get into /more/ trouble, Jack might not be able to die but if the guy wasn't sure if he could reform...that was a problem.

"Why do you care?" Alternate Martin spins on his disc to face his other self. "They don't matter you know, they're not magic," he says in such a matter-of-fact way, as if it was an obvious thing that he was surprised his double didn't know, as if his other had objected to swatting flies. "Magic is the only thing that matters. You're magic, I'm magic, they're not. What's the big deal?"

Native Martin just blinks at this way of thinking. Sure, he did think magic was the most important, but it didn't mean non-magic things didn't matter. And he had quite a few non-magic people he quite liked, he wouldn't hold such disregard for them just because of that. "Magic is the best," he says. "But non-magic things aren't nothing just because magic is the best. So stop it, this is our HQ, just go back where you came from." His own eyes begin to glow a threatening blue, adding an 'or else' to the end of that statement.

"Just shut and stop shooting me, you creep!" Native Jack screams, lunging at the other Martin, shooting a webline at each of his hands.

He's cut off mid-leap by his double grabbing him by the neck from behind. "Hey. Marty may be a jerk, and blows me up every now and then, but he blows up other stuff when I tell him to."

The Other Martin doesn't seem phased by the Jack attack. He'd have teleported away anyway, but the comment from his Jack got an eye roll. "That's not actually true," he tells his other self. "I blast what I want to, sometimes it turns out he wants to blow it up too. So he thinks I did it for him. He's a bit touched, but he's good spell fodder." As he spoke, he was watching the Jacks wrestle, but once he's done he turns to look at Native Martin, seeing the glowing blue eyes like his own, and the anger in them.

A slow boyish smile spreads on Alternate Martin's face. "Oh this could be fun," he says just as his other self shoots a powerful mystic bolt at him. Instead of blocking it, Alternate Martin teleports away, leaving the bolt to head towards the tangled Jacks. "Nice shot!"
