The Daily Prophet ;; 12 February, 1976

Andromeda scanned the front page and tutted as she read what MARA were up to now, "Bloody fools." She muttered to her toast as she continued to nibble at the jam covered slice.

Her reading done, Glenda grinned when she guessed what the girl across from her was muttering disgustedly about. "Aww, but Dementors are so cute! All cuddly and...frostbitten...and stuff."

She leaned over a bit to snag the jam, and applied it to her cream puff, in traditional Glenda disgusting-taste fashion.

"But yes, they're a bit mental. You'd think that the Prophet would know better than to but them on the front page--it just makes the issue get thrown out that much quicker."

"And you would let them roam around? In danger of where they could be seen by muggles? It's almost a security disaster, imagine explaining one? It's hard enough to explain to magical children." Andromeda screwed her nose up at the jammy cream puff concoction and sniffled delicately, "It's be terrible too if they just floated around, making everyone sad. Quidditch would be rubbish for example."

Glenda bit into her sugar-laden cream puff thoughtfully; it was a testament to years of practice in cream-puff eating that none of the cream exploded out the other side.

"Well, I don't think Muggles see them--they'd just feel deathly chilly and maniacally depressed. So psychiatrists would mysteriously begin to profit enormously, and we get our very own soul-hungry watchdogs! It's genius."

She took another bite, and paused to lick the raspberry jam off her fingers.

"Quidditch would be rubbish, though, and I suppose we can't be having that. Could we get unicorns to protect us? I'm rather fond of unicorns."

Andromeda eyed the cream puff dubiously in case it spewed cream all over her jumper or even her face.

"Muggles surely would know something was wrong though, oh well, the Ministry will never let it happen." She finished her slice of toast and picked up a pear, "Rumour has it there are unicorns in the forest here, but no one's seen them for years. I'm also not sure they can protect us from Dementors."

"Yes, they'd probably notice something, but empirical evidence shows that they would never connect it to invisible ghostly black-robed figures sucking the happiness out of them; Muggles are a bit obtuse like that."

Her cream puff finished, Glenda scooped a hearty serving of eggs onto her plate, topped it with horseradish, and started hunting for the ketchup.

"Andy, unicorns can do anything. I have faith in them."

"I'd suppose not, they don't quite have the mental capacity we do. I suppose if we didn't our minds would explode - must be a fairly similar situation when muggleborns get their letter, well for their families at least." Andy eyed her friends latest dish and decided to stick to the pear.

"For a Ravenclaw you put a lot of faith into one mystical animal."

"I daresay we have our minds exercised from a very young age. Also, for whatever reason, Muggles are very intolerant of magic, society-wise--books tend to be rather vague on the subject, but I think we had a hand in that. It's quite convenient for us that Muggles send all the people who see fairies and people riding broomsticks to the loony bin."

Glenda looked sadly at the last bite of her concoction, mourning the end of an era of egg and condiment goodness.

"The one mystical animal with the natural equivalent of a sword protruding from its head. I say my faith is well-placed."

"I suppose muggles just do as they please, 'cept that one writer chappy who found the photo of fairies, he was adamant magic was real. Wrote some pretty good stuff as well."

Andy stared in wonderment as her friend looked mournfully at a forkful of egg, "Just eat it, you'll have more tomorrow no doubt and we have class in 10 minutes."

"I take it you've drawn up a list and weighed the pros and cons of each mystical animal and decided that unicorns are best? Or is it just a childhood love you're clinging too?"

"Good point," Glenda said, brightening instantly. She finished off the last bite with relish--not to be confused with the actual relish she had added to her eggs halfway through eating them.

She grinned at Andy's query.

"Well, it was about half and half. My mum drew a picture of a unicorn on my nursery wall, so I guess that stuck, but also, unicorns surpass dragons by a hair, mostly because I'm not a fan of being accidentally burned to death."

She toyed with her fork for a second, in deep thought.

"Or maybe not-so-accidentally. Dragons are rather nasty."

Abandoning the fork, she got up off the bench, scrounged up her bookbag from under the table, and gestured at Andy with a grand flourish.

"Shall we, mademoiselle? Herbology awaits with bated breath."

"Dragons are dangerous, but luckily we should never need to cross one. Unless, no, I gave up care of magical creatures." Andy picked up her bag and moved off with Glenda into the crowd.

"Thrilling, plants. Just what I love." She said sarcastically, "More my sisters forte."

"Oh, did you hear about Flitwick's sleepwalking again? He got into greenhouse 1 somehow the other night."

"I still say it's a shame that you did that. We've now got a pool running on which limb Kettleburn's going to lose next. I've got a sickle down on his left foot, and since he's missing two fingers on his left hand, the odds are promising."

She dodged around a first-year, yelping slightly as her heavily-loaded bookbag veered her more sharply off-course than she was comfortable with. However, as she was rather used to this particular effect of gravity, she soon righted herself.

"Really? Your sister? Which? Actually, it must be Narcissa--I can't imagine that Bellatrix has anything to do with plants other than using them for poisons."

"No!" Glenda said, with all the outraged joy of one who has found a prime tidbit of gossip. "Really? How'd they find him? Did he wake up the Mandrakes?"

Her back curved in a painful-looking C, Lily hunched over the table, her eyelashes practically grazing the paper. She ignored the delicious food and the loud gosiping of fellow students. She wasn't interested in the new Cleansweep, or Olivander's big sale. She read one part of the front page over and over again, her mouth moving as her brain tried to understand exactly what was being said:

"'I have no reason to believe Lord Voldemort will want to hurt chldren, but there is no reason to not take precautions. We will keep every student,of any blood status, as safe as possible.'"

It seemed a bit contradictory, and Lily frowned as she tried to piece together her Headmaster's logic.

Lucius, who happened to be ignoring the flurry of owls at the time and leaving for the common room. He spotted Lily Evans in a rather odd position, and couldn't help but want to irritate her. Redheads were supposedly feisty. He didn't want to miss that. He approached her quietly, bending down so his mouth was right next to her ear.

"Is it interesting, Evans?"

Without looking up, Lily frowned deeper as she read Dumbledore's quote for the billionth time while replying.

"Not real--well, I don't know. Maybe?"

That....wasn't quite the reaction he'd hoped for. Lucius sat down next to her, shoving the blonde girl down a seat. "What is it? I want to read." He held his hand out for the paper, assuming she'd give it to him.

"Hold on."

Lily read the quote one last time.

"Here." She surrendered the paper to Malfoy and finally took at her empty plate, which she decided to fill with a few eggs and a bit of toast.

"Do you see?" she asked, after finishing a few bites.

Lucius' eyebrows furrowed as he read the article. "That doesn't make any sense," he said when he was finished. "Why would they take precautions if we're not in danger? Isn't that like tempting fate?" Not that Lucius was worried. He was pureblooded. What did he have to worry about?

"Exactly!" Lily exclaimed in a whisper, excited that Malfoy had picked up on the same contradiction she had. "It seems a bit funny, doesn't it? Not Dumbledore's usual style."

She returned to poking her cooling eggs for a quick moment before turning to the blond.

"What do you think of all this?"

Lucius sighed. "I'm not exactly sure. I know Dumbledore's never been outright honest with us, what with his always speaking in vague terms, but this just doesn't make sense at all." He paused for a moment, considering something. "What do you think would happen?" he asks her, "You know, if this Voldemort bloke wasn't a legend or whatever it is they're calling him."

"I don't quite know," Lily admitted. "Sounds a bit different than the Dark Lord Grindlewald we learned about with Professor Binns, doesn't it? People didn't go missing like this with Grindlewald."

She pushed her half-full plate away and bit her lip. "I don't know the names of many of the missing, but some people say there's a pattern. That they're all. Oh, you know. Muggleborn."

Lucius made a face somewhere between a grimace and trying to be sympathetic. "Well, maybe the people haven't really gone missing?" Lucius offered , attempting to make her feel better. "Maybe Leach is right."

This made Lily's frown deepen. "But why would anyone lie about it? Why cause all this fea--this concern if nothing was wrong?"

Though she had bruised her elbow in her attempt to get the last cream puff, it sat cooling, abandoned on her plate as Glenda quickly read through the front page. She looked upset up until the point where she found Dumbledore's name in the article, upon which the furrow in her brow quickly smoothed itself out.

She set the paper down for a second and looked up toward the Head Table, scrutinizing the wizard in question as if he would suddenly look up and reveal his master plan.

When he didn't, she shrugged and turned the paper to page four. She had always liked unicorns.

Severus glared at the paper before him as he walked through the Great Hall toward the Slytherin table. He navigated past obstacles quite effectively, stepping ON someone's foot purposely stuck out to trip him and side-stepping a first year carrying a pile of books. Severus of course was nice enough to point out to this first year that a simple dunderhead could cast a spell to levitate the books and not worry about them being dumped over the floor.

Hmmm... I didn't think the Minster had enough innocence to have a unicorn. I am pretty sure the fact that such a magical beast is associated with him is hurting his image. Suave, indeed. Severus thought with a smirk on his face. The smirk soon left his face as he read the article about the Dark Lord. As Severus moved into his usual seat at the Slytherin table his eyes quickly read through the article. Once completed his eyes darted up toward the Head table.
