En Route
She was still on the plane. Which actually was completely according to schedule. It was just a little odd to consider how long this took in comparison to traveling with Father. Which made the copy of Travel Impressions: In Switzerland particularly valuable in keeping from going out of her mind. It was so sweet that Andrew had remembered she was a sucker for Dumas.
Of course, he was always sweet. Really sweet. And so smart.
And her mind needed a subject change. After a few more minutes concentrating on her book, she eventually looked over to him. "All right. This isn't so bad."

Andrew is working his way through the latest treatises of UN members. Absorbed in them, really, as usual. Enough so that he starts slightly when she speaks.

"Hmm? Oh, oh right... yeah, I told you. Its almost restful."

A smile. "Sorry to abruptly interrupt you there. Yes, almost. I'm going to need to find somewhere to run around for a bit when we've properly arrived, though."

"No, no, its ok. If you didn't interrupt me now and then, I'd starve to death in a sea of books. Hmmm, what would you like to do?"

"Hmm. I don't know. Isn't the standard procedure in New York City to jump around between various rooftops?"
She shrugs a little. "Maybe just a good long walk."

"Actually, I believe the standard for visitors in New York is to go shopping. I also believe they're rather fond of their distinctive pizza and hot dogs. We're already set on hotel reservations, and have a lot of time to kill, so we could get up to whatever you'd like."

"I can't begin to think what I'd want to shop for, but I could definitely go for some pizza in addition to making sure my legs don't atrophy from disuse." A slow smirk. "And the sooner we get you into something that passes for a regular eating routine, the better."

"The odds of that happening aren't good unless you're planning on joining me... and keeping track, breakfast, lunch and dinner. But to start out, pizza sounds good, and maybe a walk about to get to know the city a bit, sure."

"Your Mom," Giovanna can't always keep the traces of Audible Capitalization out of her tone when talking about Andrew's family. "Was operating under the disadvantage of familiarity with the concept of cutting her losses and getting other things done." A smirk. "I can be stubborn beyond rationality."

They were coming in over the city now. She looked out the window -- and quickly calculated which building it would be best to teleport to with Andrew if Anything Went Wrong.

Its a good thing Giovanna thinks of such things, which, of course, is part of why she's along. She can both handle the job assigned to her, and is less obvious and threatening than a typical security detail. In any case, Andrew definitely isn't thinking on security or tactical reasoning, he rarely does. He's occasionally barely aware of where he is once he gets a book or newspaper in his hand.
"Believe me, I know. I think I passed morning classes because of you. Thank you, by the way."

Giovanna's just fine with that. As usual, he'd think in the months and years and eons, and she'd think in the split seconds and the hours.
The smile got just a little bit sheepish. "I'm sure you'd have managed somehow anyway, but you're welcome."

She smiled again, and soon the plain was landing, and there wasn't even time for the miniscule discomfort in her ears to fade completely before she needed to get used to the vast discomfort of being constantly grossly outnumbered began. New York was a big city, and quite, quite Other to Giovanna's reckoning, especially in comparison to Hammer Bay.

But she was good and outwardly calm as they went through the processes of getting out and settling in. She blinked longer than usual when she thought her eyes were about to flare up enough to spook someone, even.

Andrew switches back to English once they're off the plane and talking to customs officials. He handles the paperwork quickly and efficiently, and answers the questions regarding their papers. Better to let Giovanna stay on alert and answer only what she has to. Once they're through customs, he goes through the effort of contacting half a dozen embassies in follow up to earlier discussion, then heads for the gift shop to pick up three local newspapers.

"Alright, I think we're set. If we have any problems, since we don't have official recognition here, we have three embassies who'll give us a place to stay and legal aid if we need it. Our hotel room will be ready when we get there so we can drop our things off and start walking. We'll have limousine service from the curb, and on call, but we don't need to use it." Grandfather and mom would prefer he stay behind tinted glass and out of the way, he knows, but in general, he hates limos. Too ostentatious.

Giovanna listens, and nods, and makes sure she understands which three embassies and where they are.

"Let's get our stuff to the room, then," she says, eager to get some fresh --- well...some outdoor air. Able to understand both points of view on the limo issue, Giovanna leans towards Andrew's. He doesn't need anything tacky to stay safe; not while she's around.

The ride is a fairly short one, and the bags aren't excessive. The hotel is very helpful and attentive - the best money can buy and used to foreign dignitaries and diplomats with all kinds of odd requests and used to service. Again, not Andrew's preference, but he navigates it all fairly well, verifying that Giovanna should have an extra key to his adjoining room, and she should get all the wake up calls - he's likely to sleep through them or barely notice if he's reading.

By the time they're settled in, he's obviously relieved to get away from the hotel, limo and the rest. "Alright, pizza, then. The hotel recommended a bunch of places that sound... not quite what we're looking for. How about we just see what we can find?"

Everything seems satisfactory to her, too. "Let's."

And off they go, Giovanna enjoying the exercise and the company but watching the surroundings like a hawk.

Andrew isn't totally oblivious, its new enough that he keeps some focus on his surroundings, but not nearly as intently as his companion. He's enjoying the scenery far too much.

"Wow, look at all the stores. You could live here and never need to go more than four blocks for anything."

She nods, still slightly regretting voicing the thought and bringing down the mood, but not much. Not really that much at all. Not that she'd doubted Andrew's understanding of things at all, mind you.

A little more walking, a lot of smells in the air.

He's the grandson of Magneto, he certainly understands, on more levels than he cares to. He just tends to get caught up in things now and then. The occasional trip back to Earth is handy.

"Hmmm, how about that place across the street? Smells like good pizza to me."

She can tell his certain appreciation for this and will just be happy for him there. They wait in a spot that's not too crowded, not too many people brushing past, thank goodness.

Eventually, she asks, admittedly out of the blue "Are you going to want to visit your uncle sometime?"

"Yeah, no telling." Giovanna's not sure if "very unwelcome" or "not unwelcome enough" would be more of an annoyance, actually. But that was contrary to the point of her desired commentary. "Just wanted to say, if you eventually did want to, I'd try to make the least nuisance possible."

"I'm not in any hurry to test that. Especially with all the telepaths around. I trust Xavier, but not sure about some of the others, and I'm sure they'd like to know more about grandfather. I appreciate their dedication, but I'm Genoshan first now."

Giovanna nods. "Good call." She's very glad of it, but it had seemed right to make sure he knew she'd try.

But then they actually were sitting and it was necessary to acquire ice water and ascertain that oregano was most definitely available.

The menu by itself amazes him. Back home, while he had the best of what they had, there was only so much import, so the options were often limited to what grew or was raised in Genosha. This has... everything.
"Large coke for sure, yes, bread sticks." he replies to the waitress, then looks back to Giovanna once pre-ordering has been made and they have menus.
"I appreciate it, but I know where my loyalties lie. I'm not as extremist as grandfather, but I believe in making Genosha work. Not all of the X-Men do."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

It is a sign of how very good friends or something they are that Giovanna doesn't say 'Your Grandfather isn't extremist' on near-autopilot.

"Mhm" She'd certainly heard and read a few things about what some American mutant advocates and heros thought about Genosha. The phrase 'an oversized mutant ghetto at the very best' had been used at one point in a publication she'd gotten her hands on a year or two back. Via Andrew, actually; most of her outside materials came from him.

"With so many possibilities, I'm tempted to take refuge in the familiar," she says.

He knows its not a political statement, but answers it as such anyway. "Which is exactly why we can't do that. Sticking with what's known, safe, familiar - is precisely what a lot of our enemies do. What a lot of the mutant haters do. The only time minds change is when they're exposed to new thoughts and ideas. We need to change their minds, or a few, and open some eyes... but Genosha needs to be open to international trade, diplomacy, scientific exchange... and occasionally embrace the unfamiliar."

He glances at the menu and smiles. "I think I'll start with the three cheese with prosciutto, almonds and porcini mushrooms, unless you have a suggestion? Half the menu looks... different, but good."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Giovanna listens, and, albeit slowly, smiles. He was right. Of course he was.

Then, as just putting a little oregano on a cheese pizza is apparently right out, now, she studies the menu. "Okay, I kinda like the idea of avocado and nicoise olives. We can get small orders and give each other's a try? I have no idea how almonds work on pizza."

Fortunately, her choice would still go well with oregano. She liked it.
