The Mourning After
Two days after the shooting at The Dot, Ben Parker still hasn't been back to school. He's been holed up in his room with the lights out, mostly. When he's awake, Ben is somber and silent, seemingly unable or unwilling to talk about what happened.

Now, he just sits at his desk in his room, going over old group pictures of Sidonie, Jake, and himself, and wondering if there wasn't something more he could have done to help his friend. It was his fault she was there in the first place, then that she died soon after.

If he'd had powers, like May or Guardian, Sidonie would have lived.

He just knew it.

Peter went up to check up on Ben to see how he was doing. He could tell he was taking his friend’s death pretty hard which he understood. The people he had failed to save still haunted him.

When he got to Ben’s door he knocked on the door and said, “Hey Ben is it ok if I come in.”

"Sure." he says, sighing a bit. He knew that Dad would come check on him eventually. Mom brought him home and they'd probably talked.

"Hey, Dad." Ben says, looking out the window.

He and Ben never really saw eye to eye about things, May had always been easier for Peter to deal with. Peter had wanted to just give Ben time and space, but MJ though getting both of them to talk through this would be good for both of them.

“You want to talk about what happened.”

"What is there to say, Dad?" Ben asks sadly. "One minute, Sidonie was alive and standing in front of me...and the next minute, she was lying on the ground.

I couldn't help her, like you or May could have. Guardian tried, but..." Ben trails off. He did try, while Ben couldn't do anything but look on in fear.

"Some spider-kid I turned out to be, huh?" he asks rhetorically.

“Ben not everyone gets the powers to do stuff like your sister and I can do,” Peter said, “and you know I didn’t even want your sister to get them.”

"But she has them, Dad! And she's Spider-Girl, and you're proud of her for it!" Ben says hotly.

"If I had powers, Sidonie wouldn't have died. I could have done something. I could have stopped those people who shot her. I could have made sure she didn't get shot in the first place." Ben says sadly.

"Why did it have to happen to her, Dad? She didn't hurt anyone. Sidonie was always nice to people. She was going to work for the New York Times and...take care of her mother...and..." Ben chokes up, feeling the tears behind his eyes again.

He's not going to cry in front of his dad. He can't.

"Why do good people die and bad people keep living, Dad?" he asks.

“I’m not proud of her because she has powers I’m proud of her because of how she uses her gifts.”

“I don’t know Ben, I just don’t know,” Peter said getting closer to his son, “That’s the kind of question that people have been asking since time began.”

Ben doesn't move away from his dad, but wonders about the answers to his questions. Sidonie didn't deserve to die, but the people who hurt her did.

"She was interviewing me for the school newspaper, Dad. I had her science notes and I was trying to give them back to her when it happened." he says.

"Things sure have changed from when you were a kid, huh?"

“Yeah they sure have,” Peter said, “and you could have never known what would have happened when you called her.”

"I just...I feel like there was something more I could have done, Dad. That I should have done.

Does it ever stop, Dad? The hurt? Will I ever feel like this isn't my fault?" Ben asks.

“No the hurt doesn’t stop,” Peter said honestly, “But it does get better with time. It wasn’t your fault though and with time I know you’ll see that too.”

Ben nodded, and was silent for a long time. He had a question for his father, but he wasn't sure if asking would make him mad.

Still, Ben wanted to know something about the man he was named after.

"Dad, do you still think about Uncle Ben? Does it still hurt? I know he was your best friend." Ben says. Ben doesn't know the full story of how his father's uncle died, or what came of it, but Aunt May says things sometimes. So does Mom.

Peter looks down at the ground for a moment before he can make himself say anything, “Yes I still do, a lot more than I like to admit and it still does hurt, some days are worse than others but I still working to make it up to him.”

Ben nods, not saying anything for a long moment. This is probably the longest conversation he and Dad have ever had without arguing. Ben won't readily admit it, but he likes this.

"I'm going to try to go back to school tomorrow, Dad. It's going to be hard knowing Sidonie isn't there, but I'm going to try." he says.

"Thanks, Dad. I'm really glad we talked." Ben says, yawning a little. Maybe he's tired enough to actually sleep now. He's tried recently, but it didn't work out so well.
