Eating Crow
Vincent had needed a distraction after the events in Symkaria, and more to the point, in Latveria. He'd reorganized his lab, run some upgrades on his aide droids, and upon attempting to clean up some of his old journals, had started re-reading them.

He smirked and shook his head at himself as he read about his and Kristoff's first meeting. Various incidents with Valeria and Franklin. Pranking Grimm with Storm's help.

And then he got to the outing where they clashed with the Serpent Society, and the talk with Kristoff afterwards.

He felt his stomach fall to somewhere remote.

~~~
"Kristoff?" He was still holding the journal. "Do you have any time?"
"A little while, certainly. What is it, Vincent?" He had just gotten Miranda to bed.
Vincent held the book to his chest, arms crossed. "I've been doing some reading... and a lot of thinking." He takes a seat.
"I told you once that my motivation was.. that if there was hope for me, there was hope for anyone. I threw that to the wind when he, Taliesin, showed up. I'm sorry Kristoff. If I can find him, I'll apologize to him as well." He wants to keep talking. To say that after the Asgard incident he was afraid of growing further apart in light of Kristoff taking in someone else. To say that he was just plain scared of someone that might be more like Doom than either of them.
But he doesn't. He just apologizes.
Kristoff listens. He'd tried to tell his brother, after it happened, how much it had hurt. How it had seemed that Vincent's claims to want to give people a chance were only true when it was convenient, or gave him a cute story to tell. But he'd known that some of it would take Vincent's own realizations to really sink in.
He just sets a hand on Vincent's shoulder. "That is good to know, phral."
Vincent looks up. "Do you think I should go looking for him? I don't think he could really make himself that hard to find, for me."
There's a little bit of hubris in the approximation, but the intent is sincere.
"Let us give it just a little more time before we do that. Even though I wish things had happened differently, I have to recognize that he probably feels threatened and there would be a great deal of danger involved in approaching him right now."
Vincent nods solemnly.
"On another topic..." He pulls a roughly rendered schematic out that had been tucked between two pages of his journal.
"I'm still feeling out a suitable name for the project, but the concept is for nanites, a lot of nanites, that could tunnel into historical structures and create a support skeleton. A way to preserve famous architecture, retard the deterioration of ruins like the pyramids, the Colosseum..." He voice pauses, but he gives Kristoff a favoring glance. "..certain European castles, without all the mess of conventional drilling, scaffolding, contractor unions, etc."
The schematic lacks the programming details, and notation for a cpu, but it seems to be headed in the right direction.
Kristoff looks it over and smiles. "Some good ideas here, phral."
Vincent smiles warmly at his brother. "Thank you. I felt like making something beneficial. I would need some help though. It's a far cry from working on my own armaments and equipment."
"I will happily make time to help with the hardware, but I have a recommendation in terms of the programming."
Vincent raises an eyebrow, leaning back warily.
"Who could be better than you?"
"Miss Stark is a specialist."
Vincent furrows his brow. "...and there's some other reason you think I should ask her." It's not a question.
"I highly doubt she's smarter or more experienced than you."
He's not arguing the recommendation, yet, he's just curious.
"I did not say she was, and I repeat that I look forward to working with you on much of this. But she is a programming specialist with involved nanite experience, and I think working with her on this could be a good learning experience, phral."
"Ah." Well yes, that was the sort of thing Kristoff would do.
Vincent quietly rubs his chin for a moment. "I believe that would be acceptable. I'll need time before approaching her to draw up some baseline programming parameters first."
"If you'll excuse me then, I have some logic trees to map." Vincent stands, and almost walks away, but instead goes to his brother and hugs him.
"I am sorry. I'm going to do what I can to make things better. Slowly."
Kristoff notes the 'slowly' with appreciation. Dr. Samson has been helping, apparently. He holds him tightly for a moment.
"I love you, Vincent."
"Yes.. I know, and it's past time I started living up to that. I love you too, Kristoff." He tightens the hug momentarily, then wanders off to his workspace.
