From what I can see this is just supposed to be something fun to do with ourselves while we're stuck here. Since the dress code isn't that formal, I'm pretty sure you don't have to act formally yourself.
I'm personally going as the 'date' of someone I don't know very well myself. I don't think lowly of Jou or anything, but I'm really just seeing him as a guaranteed dance partner and someone for me to chat with if I'm not speaking to someone else. If there's no romantic feelings between you and your date, you might try thinking of it that way.
