All right. He'd made it New York. Gotten off the train. He wasn't going to head straight for the damn school, though. Esteban was still annoyed at his mother and uncles for sending him away. If things weren't safe, then the family -- the parts of the family worth having -- needed him there all the more. He could take correspondence courses or something. He certainly didn't need ability training -- he had it locked down just fine -- so what was the point of Xavier's except living cushily while they were in danger?

Well, Esteban was going to take advantage of being away from home before he started the cushy life. He was going to go to one of the clubs Uncle Julio had talked about. With a small C, not that Hellfire mess. Well, he assumed not, who knew what they owned?

"It's a great city. So, you in business for shoes, electronics, or 'other'?"

"Nothing quite like that. I guess you could say I'm something of an informal bounty hunter." Not a complete lie. "A lady hired me to bring back her deadbeat ex-boyfriend. Dumbass ran off with some family heirlooms and went into Mexico to hide." Edmund smiled a little in satisfaction. "It didn't work."

"Eh, nothing like a job well done, right? My uncles -- the ones with the fancy American educations -- have done a little informal bounty hunting themselves. The government back home's hard pressed to get much of that stuff done formally."

"Nope, only thing better is a good time with a better woman." He smiles before continuing. "Yeah, Mexico has to deal with a lot of crap so I can understand the need for guys to just go and get things done."

Esteban rolled his eye. "Totally believe you, but now I'm trying not to think of the combination of the two in regards to my uncles. They 'celebrate' pretty loudly, in that 'We'll talk about it when you're older' definition of celebrate." Pause. "And now that I've spread the pain of that too-much-information, I'm Esteban."

Edmund's eyes widened a bit in comprehension. "Ah..that's okay. To each their own." Awkward. "Edmund."

He chuckled. "Yeah, guess so. So, got any recommendations for a guy who doesn't want to show up for enrollment yet, Edmund?"

"There's a good gym a couple blocks from here called 'DeSergios', just don't tell the guy that the name sounds like a pizza joint. When you say football, do you mean run into each other football or can't touch the ball with your hands football?" I know the place downtown hosts a couple concerts, think there might be one this week, though I don't remember who." Edmund raises an eyebrow in interest. "Cooking?"

He nods appreciatively at the gym and concert suggestions. "Cooking is totally a valid hobby. Particularly when you have uncles who take you on trips and should not be allowed near a stove. Admittedly, not as useful when deciding on things to do somewhere new. And yeah, I mean real futbol, no hands."

Edmund nods along before taking a look of mock annoyance.

"Okay first off, you're in America. As such you need to know that calling soccer futbol here will get your ass kicked. It's one of the country's 'asshole' laws. Right up there with pointing out that Greenland's not green."

"Oh, and don't start using the metric system. You'll freak people the hell out with that. We Americans are an odd bunch, it's part of the charm." Edmund thinks a second. "When you say cook, you mean like professionally?"

"Okay, well, my uncles explained feet. Oh, no, not at this point. But at home, we've got this itsy bitsy vegetable garden, and I've got a pretty good thing going. What about you? What are you normally into around here?"

"I go out of town a lot, but I've only recently come back home on a more permanent basis so I haven't really developed any new hobbies. I'm a bit of a heavy metal freak, so I like to check out any bands that come into town. Plus I sometimes check out the amateur performers around the area. Sometimes I go visit a friend of mine and we do stuff, but our schedules tend not to mesh so well."

Esteban listens politely and nods. "So tell me, Ed, are women in New York really more... 'aggressive'... than most other places, or have I been mistakenly afformed?"

"The New York women I've met are very confident and comfortable with who they are and how they look. It gives them a bit more of a predatory edge when it comes to men, but they're still women. Treat them with respect, don't be a douche, and you'll be fine." Edmund assured.

"Women in New York tend to have pretty good gaydar so you should be fine in that regard." Edmund raises an eyebrow before he remembers where he heard the name Richter from. "I heard the name spoken a lot in Guadalajara. Some seriously bad people. No relation?"

"Plenty of relations, unfortunately, but we're still working on that." Scowls. "Well, they're still working on that. 'The' Luis Richter was my grandfather, and it didn't get any better after he was gone, 'til when I was little and Uncle Julio came back from America with some serious concerns about the family business and a gringo boyfriend who knew two hundred different ways to kill a guy with his bare hands." Esteban pauses in a 'well, that was indiscreet. oh well. No fixing it now' way and shrugs. "Yeah. So. Anyway. Eventually it was decided I should go to school in America."

"Damn, I've met plenty of guys who claimed they knew a hundred ways to kill somebody, but two hundred..that's a first." Edmund took a sip of his drink. Despite himself, the professional in him was intrigued by just how you could kill a guy 200 ways. "I take it you'd rather be back home helping your uncles?"

"Well, maybe my estimate's a bit off, but Uncle Star was into some seriously weird shit before he and Uncle Julio got all Robin Hoody, and it got to the point where Uncle Julio made him stop explaining it to me." Esteban shrugged. "Yeah. Yeah, I would."

"Family do a lot of things to make sure their loved ones are prepared for the world." Edmund thinks about all his dad had done to prepare Edmund for the life he'd inherit. "Still, maybe these people you're going to see can help you be better prepared for when the time comes when you can help your uncles directly."
