Shadowy mastermind villain is also about as classic a trope as it gets. :)
Damien isn't Lex - they have their similarities, but Damien is much more mastermind than battlesuited megalomaniac. Still, everything in the plot sounds perfectly like things he'd do - just without letting himself be known for who he is. :)
