i would do the breakup for sure, but for the casting dilemmas i've always wondered this myself. if the character left, i'm not sure if the character still existed in our world or if they just never existed, therefore your character would always have been the one originally cast... or if the character DID exist, and your character replaced them through a scheduling conflict/studio decision/etc.
