Long Time Gone (Test Scene)
Conner Kent walks into Titans' Tower with his duffel bag, finally unable to stay to himself in Smallville anymore. Clark hasn't been home in months and the things going on the world are getting to him. The Justice League has been out of commission for years and he's been wallowing in self-pity and doubt for longer than he cares to think about. The world isn't getting any safer with everyone pulling in different directions...and Conner himself has recently seen the results of what will happen if things don't change.

"Bart? Tim? Is anyone here?" he calls out, hoping he didn't make this trip for nothing.

No, he didn't. If they aren't here, he'll just have to find everyone and bring them back.

"I like the sound of that. Hold on." he says, now shifting her to where she's simply in his arms. He walks the two of them over to the terrace doors.

The moment their outside, Conner rises into the air and flies North to Star City, which isn't far from San Francisco.

"I probably should have asked if you get airsick, but just hold on to me, okay? I won't let you go." he says, gliding along and looking up at the stars.

If he lost all of his other powers right now, he'd be glad if he could still fly.

"That's good to know, because I don't think my invulnerability protects me from projectile vomit...which is why I /never/ babysit." he chuckles.

Once they're above Star City proper, Conner simply stops and hovers in mid-air, looking down over the bustling city. He could hear all of the sounds, the whole pulse of every day life, in between Mia's breaths and heartbeat.

"Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be human. Truly human. I wonder if I could do it, now that I've seen all the stuff I've seen and know some of the things I know. I like to think I could handle it." he says.

"But then there are moments like this when I wouldn't trade what I can do for anything.

What's being human like, Mia?" he asks suddenly.

Mia was silent, mulling over his question in her head.

"Honestly, Conner...tough as all hell," she said, "I mean, anything is, but it isn't easy.

Bullets bounce off of you, Cassie can lift a bus over her head and not break a sweat, and Bart can dodge punches without blinking. You're all damn near invincible.

I'm not. Tim isn't. We can't deflect bullets, or lift buses, or dodge punches without blinking. We're...fragile. We don't act like it, but we are.

You try not to think about, but it's hard realizing that it could all end in the blink of an eye.

But it's worth every second. I've made some mistakes in my life, you know, if I hadn't made them, I wouldn't be here now."

Conner thinks over what Mia says, her words echoing some of the things Tim has said to him, as well as the talks he's had with Clark about the Kryptonia condition. Even Lex has offered some insight on the matter.

Conner continues to hold Mia aloft, her weight not even a consideration in the face of his strength. He thinks about how easy it would be to forget he was holding her if he couldn't feel and hear her heartbeat.

"I've never really thought of it being like that for you and Tim. You guys just handle yourselves so well that I forget you don't have powers like the rest of us. But Tim is one of the smartest people I've ever met. He can fight six guys solo and not take a scratch. He's a tough customer.

But the title of 'Strongest Person I Know' would go to you, Mia. If there was, like, a trophy or anything." Conner says.

"Yes, you've made mistakes, like you said. Everyone has, but you've never let your past or the future define who you're going to be and I admire that about you. You live in the moment. We could all stand to learn from that." Conner says.

He gently lowers them to the rooftop of a Queen Industries building to look over at the skyline.

"Where do you see yourself five years from now, Mia? If I can ask you that, I mean."

	"Thanks, Conner," Mia said, smiling at him. She looked out over at the skyline. "I want to be still making a difference," she said, "Whether it's as Speedy or doing something else. I want to help kids that were in the same situation that I was, Conner. I don't want to see kids forced to live out on the streets because it's too dangerous for them to go home." Clark often spoke of the issues that most people had that x-ray vision or super-hearing could pick up on. The things that Mia mentioned could only be learned by taking an interest in those around you, by listening to them and empathizing with them.

"Do you volunteer anywhere? Like at the YMCA or a Boys' and Girls' Club? I'm sure people there could benefit from your experience." he says.

"It's good that you're willing to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves. Superman always told me that it's hard to remember regular people when going up against things like Darkseid or the Appelaxians, but that we can't forget who we're fighting for." he says.

"I hope you'll stick around with the Titans, too, Mia. We could use someone who can tell us when we're getting out of touch with the real world. Tim could help with it, too, but he doesn't say what's in his head unless he's pressed for information." Conner says.

"I think I'll do that." Conner says, thinking that this might be his chance to get to know more people his own age and work at fitting in. He'll have to go in disguise of course, but it shouldn't be too hard.

"Mia, despite how you may feel about us, we /like/ you. Your HIV has nothing to do with it and you're not a part of the team out of pity or anything. You're a cool person and you're fun to be around.

I bet those kids at the Youth Center would say the same thing if I asked them." Conner grins.

He takes the menu and looks it over, seeking eggrolls, fried rice and orange chicken...because Panda Express is the sum of his experience with Chinese food. "What else is good here?" he asks.
