Harrison, Leah
Harrison was lying on a bench outside under a streetlamp. The halogen bulb spilled cool light around him and he looked as if he could have been on stage instead of just out on a curb. He didn't have a home to speak of, and most nights he just roamed around, dodging cops and talking to people. It helped that he was a vampire; the talents that came along with that unnatural blood were helpful tools to have for a street kid.

But with the advantages came the disadvantages, namely the whole burn in the daylight caveat. He did his best each morning to find a suitable hiding spot, whether it be in a cemetery, or under the streets he walked at night. There were a few homeless shelters he frequented to get showers, but he always turned down the offer of food or clothing, much to people's dismay. Tonight, his hair was wet from a recent trip to the Ninth Street shelter facilities. When he heard footsteps on the otherwise silent sidewalk, he sat up quickly, hoping it wasn't a cop bent on moving him along.

"County." He laughed. "County. I couldn't get to another country unless I hid in someone's luggage. And I don't fold up so good." Even though he'd folded into some pretty tight spaces recently to get away from the sun and it's horrible effects.

Leo could have looked in neighboring cities, even states, but Harrison was counting on the fact that maybe he hadn't. Stepping back to sit back down on the bench, he patted the space beside him for her to sit. "I got back into town a week or so ago." Time passed differently for him these days, so even he didn't quite know how close to the truth that may or may not have been. "And I'm staying around. You know me. Always bouncing from couch to couch." Though in this case it was from mausoleum to grave, any corpse kind enough to share.

The touch was nice, but he looked down into his lap, feeling an overwhelming sense of 'lost' now that he'd been found by a friend.

"County," Leah repeated, her cheeks flushing as she laughed in embarassment from what she'd obviously misheard.

Still, it was a little odd. Leo always went all the way with an investigation, then again... This was just a favor she'd asked of him. Maybe it was different. She would have to ask him about it later, and she planned on it, filing that information away.

"Well, I'm glad you're back," she told him, moving to sit down next to him.

She took a moment then to look him over, taking in his appearance and expression with interest. He looked all right. A little pale and tired, maybe. But he didn't seem sick or hurt. That was good.

"Where are you staying tonight? You should come to my place, I have an extra room," she told him, reaching over to settle her hand over his. "I mean it. If you say no I'm going to sit here with you all night, you know." And she would, she was stubborn that way.

"I'm up all night, sleep all day. You're going to stubborn yourself into getting no sleep tonight; you know that, right?" But he liked her offer because it meant she cared, and that had been a very limited thing to find for Harrison these days. "It's just easier to find places to sleep during the day, and when it gets cold, it's nicer to sleep when the days are warm." That was his explanation, and one that was true in many cases with human homeless people.

Deciding to shift the subject, he leaned back on the bench, reaching over to touch her shoulder. "Why were you out walking so late? This isn't the worst end of town, but it ain't the best either."

"You'll give in," Leah said with confidence as she settled against the bench and hugged her jacket more tightly around her slender frame.

She kept her blue eyes trained upon him as she dipped her head down, hiding her mouth and chin against the warmth of her scarf. She couldn't imagine how hard it must be for him to be all alone like that, having to sleep on the streets, and she didn't like it.

"I'll tell you if you take my offer and sleep on my couch tonight," she told him with a sly smile as she lifted her chin up out of her scarf.

She was right. Harrison had always been the sort of person to give in, and Leah was someone he had an impossible time denying. Perhaps he'd be safe there. There were ways to avoid the sunlight without really being in a coffin or the like. He also didn't like the fact that she was so obviously cold when he could barely feel the temperature against his dead skin.

"All right, offer taken." He stood up and put out a hand for her, wanting her to take it. "Now tell me; I'm dying to know." He caught his own irony and smirked a little to himself.

When Harrison agreed, Leah beamed happily and took a hold of his hand so that she could stand up with him. She laced her fingers up with his and let out a soft breath as she tipped her head to the side. His hands were a lot colder than she'd expected them to be, even colder than her's, which was strange.

"Well," he said as they started to walk. She kept her hand in his. "I got into a fight with my boyfriend."

She hadn't had one when Harrison had disappeared, but it had been a while, enough time for her to obviously develop a relationship anyway.

Not thinking about how cold his hands were, or how weird that might be for her, Harrison simply squeezed her's as they walked. He knew the way from there, remembering Leah's and Leo's place vividly, even though sometimes his former life seemed like a dream.

"Boyfriend? No shit?" He wasn't shocked she had a boyfriend, just that it was a new development. It was good news, except the fighting part. "Guess things change when you've been gone, right?" Swinging their arms slightly as they walked, he focused his eyes ahead, making sure there wasn't anything threatening in their way. "What happened?"

Leah lowered her gaze down to their hands, smiling a little when he squeezed her's. She blinked and lifted her gaze back up to focus ahead of them as she huffed a quiet sigh through her nose.

"Well," she started, giving his hand a squeeze back, "He's been hanging with this crowd that's basically... you know," she made a face, "Bad. I don't even know how it started, you know? But he's getting into drugs and I think he might be dealing and if he is well then we're pretty much over."

Glad to hear her sense, Harrison smiled a little. Not that he wanted her to break up with her boyfriend, but he liked the fact that she was still so strong. "Pretty much over and I imagine your brother would kick the crap out of him. Or arrest him." Because Leo wasn't the type to lose it like that, except perhaps when it came to Leah.

"Bad crowds can get pretty sticky." He agreed. His current state was the same sort of situation, the imprudence of selecting friends poorly. "How did you meet him?"

"He'd definitely arrest him," Leah said with a soft laugh.

Though she appreciated Leo's protectiveness over her, sometimes it got to be a bit of an annoyance and she grew frustrated with it. She knew her brother was just looking after her, though.

"I Adam in my philosophy class, which he has stopped going to," she explained with a dramatic sigh. "He's pretty much stopped going to all of his classes. Leo doesn't like him," she paused to glance over at Harrison then with a smirk, "Are you surprised?" Leo didn't like anyone, or so it seemed.

Harrison wrinkled his nose. "I'm stunned. Leo is such a warm, friendly person." Clear sarcasm edged his voice before he laughed. For a couple more blocks, he just enjoyed the company, and the night. A few times in his short vampiric life, Harrison had missed seeing the sunrise, but mostly he just missed his friends from his previous life. At the moment, he was happy to be reunited with Leah, no matter how brief it might have to last considering what he was.

After a bit of silence, he glanced over at her. "Do you love this guy?"

Leah bit down on her lower lip in thought the moment he asked that question. She canted her head to the side and let a quiet sigh escape her nose before she glanced over at Harrison with a little smile. She shook her head.

"No," she answered. "Maybe I could. But I don't, not yet. Which is why I should get out now, I think."

He nodded. "You should." Because he thought maybe that's what she wanted to hear. She seemed to be leaning in that direction, and Harrison was built to please. That, and he didn't want to see her get hurt. Thinking about that reminded him that he hadn't had anything to eat tonight, and maybe it wasn't the best idea to go to her house hungry.

It wasn't like he could break away at this point though. Biting the inside of his cheek, he was careful to avoid his canine teeth which had sharpened at the very idea of feeding. "I've gotta go to the bathroom." He said suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere. Dropping her hand, he stepped back and glanced around for a spot, someplace to go to get away from her for a few minutes in order to find a quick fix.

Leah nodded her head in agreement with Harrison. She knew that she was right, but it helped to talk to someone who wasn't Leo because Leo had a way of telling her what to do and not letting her decide things for herself. Or, well, not wanting her to. Leah realized it was mostly because of the terrible things he'd seen, though. She could hardly blame him.

When Harrison mentioned having to go to the bathroom, she looked at him in slight surprise. A soft laugh escaped her and she reached out to gently tug the sleeve of his shirt.

"We're like, a block away, you can wait can't you?"

He fluttered his eyes closed, aware of how warm she was and how much it contrasted to the air surrounding her skin. Harrison could forget things, like blood and hunger. But when they flickered to his mind, he had an impossible time shaking them, especially when his physiology kicked in.

"No, I totally can't. I think--I think there's a place just over there. Wait here, okay? I'll be right back." His brain was working overtime as he walked backwards away from her, out of her grasp. It was true, he couldn't wait, so at least that part wasn't a lie. He gave her one last look before turning and running toward the alley that was back a few feet, ducking into the shadows. Once there, he looked around, panicked and not knowing what to do.

Leah furrowed her brow and gave him a strange look, but she let him go. If he had to go that badly, well, she wasn't going to tell him no.

She stood there quietly, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she watched him disappear, and she wasn't sure what to do then. So she just waited, crossing her arms over her chest as she stood there. When she was walking home alone, she was on a mission, but just standing there waiting she felt a little nervous.

Finding someone from whom to feed quietly had never been easy, but doing it under such serious time constraint made the job even more nerve wracking. He didn't have to go very far to find someone loitering. People were so often thrown away like garbage, it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary to find them sitting amongst the dumpsters between buildings.

When he was finished, he cleaned himself up, leaving the person alive, but so stunned he would probably just sleep it off like a bad bender. Returning about 15 minutes later, he looked as if he'd had a workout, cheeks pink from the blood running through him, just enough to tide him over so he didn't lose it around Leah. "Sorry." He said sheepishly.

Leah was starting to get impatient and a little worried after a few minutes. Honestly, how long did something like this take? She sighed softly and wandered over to the curb where she sat, but after a few more minutes she got antsy and got to her feet again, intending to look for him. Then, there he was. She nearly ran into him, and her eyes went a little wide.

"That's okay," she said after a moment, "Are you okay? I was getting worried."

The way he stood was incredibly firm, as rooted as an oak. His presence was somehow stronger now too. Putting out his hand, he caught her shoulder so they wouldn't collide and when he removed it, he was horrified to see a small smear of blood on her clothes where his hand had been.

"I--I'm fine." He glanced down at his hand, seeing the smudge he'd missed during the clean up. It was a stark red against his skin and he couldn't hide it. "Damnit, I must have scraped my hand on something." It even sounded lame to his own ears. Clutching his hand to his chest, he looked up at Leah. "We should get back to your place."

Leah was surprised how strong his grip on her shoulders was. She blinked and just stared up at him for a second, and she didn't notice the blood until he looked at his hand and she followed his gaze.

"You're bleeding? Let me see," she said softly as she reached out to try and take a hold of his hand so she could examine it. "I can get it cleaned up at my house..." she mumbled absently as she tried to get a look.

Harrison was adamant about not letting her see. His strength was immense, and trying to unfurl his arm was like trying to move stone. "No, no it's fine. I can clean it up when we get to your place." If she did it, he knew that she'd notice the fact there wasn't a wound to be found.

He started walking again, hoping she'd forget about it and follow him. Her house wasn't far, but he thought maybe she'd just forget about the supposed injury before they even got there. That, he knew, wasn't likely, but there wasn't much else he could do besides hope.

Leah struggled for a few moments, trying to let Harrison let her have a look, but he was a lot stronger than she'd anticipated. She didn't remember him being so strong. When he pulled away and started to walk ahead, she blinked in confusion but she followed.

"You're acting a little strange," she said softly, though she supposed he might have been tired. Living on the streets, he probably didn't get good sleep. "You don't need stitches, do you?"

"No, of course not." He glanced over his shoulder, pausing and waiting for her to catch up. It made him feel weird that she noticed his strange behavior. Maybe this had been a bad idea. Maybe he should have just told her she'd made a mistake and he wasn't who she thought he was.

When they got to her house, he was afraid Leo might be home. Shifting anxiously from one foot to the other, he waited for her to unlock the door.

"Good," Leah said, trying to lighten the air because it felt so heavy. Being sensitive to those sorts of things bothered her, but she'd learned to deal with it over time.

She unlocked the door and stepped inside, listening for Leo. She could hear music or the TV, but she motioned for Harrison to go down the stairs to the basement area, where she stayed.

Heeding her gesture, Harrison went down the stairs quickly, thankful he probably wasn't going to have to run into Leo. For some reason, he thought he'd have a harder time hiding things from him. Though clearly he wasn't having an easy go hiding them from Leah.

He was still holding his hand to his chest, but since he wasn't actually bleeding, he wasn't getting any blood on his clothes. Looking around, it was the same as he remembered it, flared with her style that he appreciated so much. "Thanks for inviting me." He said, also trying to keep his voice bright so that she didn't worry about him.
