Leo, Hiro

When Leo had gotten home that night, he'd stared at the phone number on his hand for a long time. The man who'd written it there had been incredibly attractive, but so much so that it made Leo suspicious. People weren't that alluring without some sort of nefarious purpose, or at least they weren't in his world. Eventually though, Leo had scratched down the phone number onto a slip of paper and tucked it under the phonebook before he went to go wash up for bed.

A couple of weeks later, it wasn't that Leo had forgotten about the encounter, but he was surprised to see the number flutter out onto the floor when he picked up the phonebook to order pizza. Glancing down at it, he rolled his bottom lip in between his teeth thoughtfully. After a good five minutes of staring, he reached down to pick it up and grabbed the phone in one bold move. He told himself it was because Hiro was suspicious and he was intent on finding out more about him. Really, it was because Leo just wanted to see him again. Dialing the number, he listened to the phone ring.

Hiro definitely hadn't forgotten about Leo, either. There was something about that man that had been entirely too intriguing, and that was exacly why Hiro had scrawled his number onto Leo's palm in hopes of hearing from him again. After a few weeks, though, he figured that Leo just wasn't going to call, so when the phone rang he was a little surprised. He didn't recieve phonecalls all that often, and despite how well he'd adapted to changes over the years, technology always seemed a little bit annoying in his opinion yet he did find it to be useful.

He plucked up his cell phone from the coffee table as he lounged around on his couch, enjoying a foreign movie, though really it wasn't all that foreign since it was in Japanese.

"Hello?" he answered, his voice mellow and a little lazy sounding.

Leo liked the sound of Hiro's voice, but he was surprised it held just as much magnetism over the phone line. Still, Leo felt more in control of his own reactions now that Hiro was reduced to a clunky receiver held in his hand.

"Hi. We met a little while ago. You wrote your number on my hand." He spoke as if he thought Hiro wrote a lot of numbers on a lot of hands. "I'm Leo." Because why would someone like Hiro remember his name? It was even more awkward an opening than Leo had expected from himself. Shutting his eyes, he put his fist to his forehead in a mock knock to his skull.

The moment Hiro heard Leo's voice, he recognized it, and it brought a little smile to his lips. He let his free hand settle agains his abdomen as he listened to the other man's words, and his smile only grew.

"Yes, I remember you," he said after a moment, "I was beginning to wonder if you'd call at all. Been busy, have you?"

He glanced down at his little grey cat as it walked by and he reached out to gently scratch the animal behind the ear as he waited for a response from Leo.

Leo didn't want to breathe a sigh of relief when Hiro said he remembered him, but he did. "I don't really know what I've been lately. Things have just been weird." The cases he was working on were full of dry leads and strange circumstances. And some of his best informants were going silent, if not turning up dead. It just felt like something big was on the horizon.

"But here I am. I was going to order pizza and I called you instead."

"Weird?" Hiro repeated, though he said the word as if it was a question, a hint of curiosity lingering in his voice. He wet his lips and closed his eyes as he stretched his legs out a little bit.

"Well, I guess it's good to know that I won over a pizza," he added almost teasingly. Sometimes it was hard for him not to be flirtatious, even if he was rather mellow. "So what made you decide to call?"

Leo tried to imagine what Hiro was doing on the other end of the line. There was really no telling, but his mind had him lounging since his voice seemed to exude that. He wondered what his own voice indicated: standing at the kitchen counter, shifting his weight anxiously from foot to foot. "Your number was under the phone book and--" There was more to his reasons, but he hesitated to say what he was thinking.

Finally, his own blunt honesty won out. "And because I think anyone was interesting as you are just by existing is trying too hard, and I want to know what's up with you."

The words brought a very amused smile to Hiro's lips, and a brow arched up in quiet curiosity. Leo's choice of explanation was a little humorous, but mostly because most people would never say such a thing.

"You want to know what's up with me?" he asked, a soft little chuckle slipping past his lips. "I'm not sure what you mean by that."

"Yeah, what's up with you. What's your schtick? Your purpose? Your game?" Really, Leo hadn't called with the intention to shake Hiro down. But it was shaping up that way and he grimaced at his own lack of grace by comparison. "I mean, I deal with a lot of charismatic people and they've usually got something up their sleeve. I've been thinking about you a lot, and I just can't help but think you're after something."

Like what, he had no clue. If Leo had taken a moment to step back and actually listen to himself, he'd realize he sounded like a paranoid freak.

"I don't have a schtick," Hiro replied, saying the word slowly, as if he didn't quite understand it even though he did. "My purpose is to live, like everyone else. I don't have a game, I'm not a very athletic person to be honest. Unless you're referring to games that don't pertain to anything physical - but I'm not sure what games those could be and," he paused with a sigh. Some human habits were hard to break, even after living for so long as a vampire. "This is all because I'm charasmatic and you can't stop thinking about me? If this is your way of asking me on a date, it's not a very good one, you know."

"I wasn't!" He blurted, but when it came right down to it, that's kind of exactly what he was doing. Going silent for a second, he wondered how ridiculous it would be to just hang up and disconnect the phone entirely.

"All right, I was. Or I was going to after I interrogated you. That's how I pick people up, bare-bulb, good cop-bad cop, book 'em Dano. The works."

"You weren't?" Hiro said with a hint of amusement in his voice as he managed to scoop up his cat with his free hand and he lifted the animal up to settle it against his chest.

"You were," he smiled, once Leo admitted it, and his smile grew into a smirk. "I guess I'll have to hand it to you, you do have an oddly unique approach. So you're trying to figure out if I'm some... strange drug dealer or if I'm involved in something creepy like people trafficing before you ask me out?"

"Don't you think it's a good idea to make sure any dates aren't crazed serial killers? What if I'm a crooked cop involved in a sex ring? You should probably at least try to figure that out before you agree to go mini-golfing with me or something." It was kind of a sad way to live life, expecting every appealing person to be a criminal unless proven otherwise.

Twisting the phone cord around his fingers, he pinched the coils and fiddled anxiously. "You don't really seem like the mini-golf type, but the fact remains, you never know who the bad guys are."

"Mini golfing?" Hiro asked with a softened smile. "You're right. I'm not really the mini golfing type," he added as the cat laying against his chest started to purr.

He wondered if Leo had any pets, though if he did, Hiro couldn't imagine that the man would have a cat. He seemed like more of a dog person to Hiro. After a moment, he furrowed his brow a little. It was often he thought of things as random as that about a person.

"So, are you a crooked cop involved in a sex ring?"

"I'm as straight as they come." He blinked at his own choice of words. "As a cop." He clarified, even though he probably didn't need to do so.

After a long pause, he sighed. "Do you just want to meet me someplace? Anyplace?" He wanted to see the other, felt a compelling desire to lay eyes on him and find out more about him in person. Just his disconnected, velvety voice was driving him crazy.

"I'm sure you are," Hiro said with a smile.

After a moment he gently plucked the cat up from his chest and sat it down on the floor before he swung his legs over the side of the couch so that he could get to his feet. He headed towards the his bedroom, stretching an arm over his head as moved.

"Sure we can, where would you like to meet?"

He looked at the time. It was a little later than dinner and he'd plan to order enough pizza for lots of leftovers in case Leah was hungry when she got home. Still, there was plenty in the fridge, so he didn't feel too bad just going out to fend for himself.

"There's a cafe on the corner of 9th and Liberty. Really small. Good food. The best coffee." Little did he know Hiro probably wouldn't care much about how good the food was.

Hiro ruffled a hand through his hair with a smile and he nodded his head a little despite the fact that Leo couldn't see him. He slid open the doors ot his walkin closet, then moved to lean against the edge of the doorway.

"All right, I'll see you there in about," he paused, mentally calculating how long it would take him to get there. He knew it wouldn't take long, but he wanted to change. "Thirty minutes?"

Thirty minutes. It seemed as if he'd gotten what he wanted, but a dart of anxiety ran through him before he could respond. "Yeah. Yeah, half hour works fine." His mind was already racing about what it was he should wear.

When he hung up, he glanced at his watch and went into his room to attack his closet. He didn't know which would be worse, looking like he'd tried to hard or looking like a total slob. There was a high likelihood of both. Leo had little to no fashion sense, and before this moment, he'd staunchly defended the fact that such a skill was utterly superfluous. Finally deciding on casual slacks and a Pink Floyd t-shirt, Leo headed down to the street so he could walk the few blocks to the cafe.

Arriving shortly thereafter, he grabbed a booth and looked around. Hiro was going to look out of place here. Then again, Leo figured the man looked out of place lots of places.

The tone of Leo's voice let Hiro in on the fact that the man was a little anxious. Not only that, but Hiro could feel it dripping through the phone. He had to admit, though, if he was human he probably would have been feeling a little anxious, too. In all reality, he did feel something but it had been such a long time since he had felt anything like it that it was difficult to put his finger on just what it was.

"See you in a bit," he said softly before he hung up his phone and tossed it on the bed.

It wasn't difficult for him to choose what he wanted to wear. He'd always been somewhat fashionable, though he had the tendency to keep everything very simple. Simple worked. Sophisticated and simple were his two main stylistic choices. He settled on a pair of navy slacks with pinstripes and a thin white button up dress shirt. He left the cuffs lazily undone, rolling them up to his elbows loosely, and didn't bother with the last two buttons or the first two, either. After he slipped on a pair of black shoes, he grabbed his cell again and pocketed it before he headed out of his room to grab his keys. His fingertips moved over the buttons of the alarm system by the front door and once he was outside of his flat he locked it up, then headed outside.

The air was cool, but still not cold enough that him arriving with no jacket would seem too odd and out of place. The walk was actually calming and it didn't take long at all. Leo was easy to spot, and Hiro smiled faintly before he headed over to where the man was sitting.

"Hello," he greeted as he slipped into the seat across from Leo. His hair was a rich auborn color this time, rather than the stark blonde it had been before when he'd first met Leo.

They said that when leeches latched on to have a meal, they made the skin go numb so that the host didn't know what was happening. Not that Hiro was doing so on purpose, but the man's presence was a mixture of numbing and thrilling, causing a unique swirl of emotion in Leo's body when he looked over at him. With an excellent memory for detail, he picked up on Hiro's sense of style quickly and was surprised by the change of hair. Mostly, however, he was just pleased to see him and it showed on his face despite his usual glowering expression.

The waitress, seeing that the second had arrived, hopped to their table and Leo launched in on a rather large food order and when he described the cup of coffee he wanted, he had to use his hands as if he was holding a bowling ball between them.

Hiro, unlike Leo, didn't order a huge meal. He'd fed earlier on in the evening, a willing participant and his cheeks were even a little bit more vibrant. He did order a cup of coffee, though, not that he needed or wanted one, it was just for appearances really.

Once the waitress was gone, Hiro let his blue eyes flickered back towards Leo and he smiled a little bit.

"You must be hungry," he teased.

"I'm always hungry." He confessed. Leo's metabolism was a blessing considering his love of food. "You're really just going to drink coffee? They have amazing pie here. You should get a slice--my treat." Leo didn't exactly mind being the only one eating, but he thought it was a little strange Hiro wasn't at least munching on something.

The coffee came first, of course and Leo's mug was considerably bigger than Hiro's. They knew him pretty well here. Instantly bringing the cup to his mouth, he had a swallow. When he set it back down on the table, his face was a mask of pleasure, that first taste of really amazing java doing wonderful things to his tastebuds.

"I ate all ready," Hiro said casually as he leaned back in his chair, allowing himself to just sort of lounge comfortably as he focused his gaze upon Leo's face. "But thank you."

It wasn't hard to admire Leo, in fact it was quite easy. Hiro liked his dark hair, and how round his eyes were. Their color was warm too, with a distinct hardness about them, though. He couldn't remember the last time he'd met someone so guarded.

"So, you're a night owl, I take it?" he asked, reaching for his cup of coffee when it arrived.

"Oh," was all Leo said to the fact that Hiro had already eaten. It was believable enough, certainly. It didn't seem to hinder him from digging into his own meal when it arrived. He ate with zeal, enjoying every bite.

"A night owl, yeah--you could say that. Kind of when the bad guys come out, you know?"

"Yeah," Hiro said slowly with a faint smile, his eyes lighting up with slight amusement. "I'm just a night owl, no particular reason aside from the fact that it's just..." He paused, wetting his lips as he traced his fingertips along the rim of his coffee cup. "In my nature."

Quirking a brow, Leo laughed. "Did you think I was calling you one of the bad guys? Maybe being a bad guy is in your nature and that's why you stay up so late?"

He shook his head, holding up his hand, not requiring an answer to that question. He was just joking anyway. As much as he wanted to pin something terrible on Hiro, just to avoid being attracted to him, Leo couldn't manage to find anything but mild infatuation for him. "So how does one get into art?"

Leo's comment got a mild laugh out of Hiro and he simply shook his head some as he let his shoulders droop in a completely relaxed state.

"I didn't, no," he answered, the smile on his face a little warmer than most of his smiles were. "I think one is just born into art. How does one get into detective work? I think that is a much better question."

Leo gave Hiro a look as if to say: Seriously? "Born into art? Way to try and change the focus back to me. But no one is born into anything. Everyone chooses what it is they really want to do, parents are just a convenient excuse." Leo held onto the belief that whether people were miserable or happy, it was their choice to be so.

He was keen to find out more about Hiro and he wasn't about to get sidetracked by talking about himself, even if it was tempting to tell the guy his life story.

A warm laugh slipped past Hiro's lips, and he simply shook his head as he let one of his hands move to rest ontop of the table, next to his cup. He could feel the warmth from the coffee radiating against his skin, and he liked the way it felt.

"I just meant that... a person is usually born with a love of art or a talent for it," he explained, "That's all." And he'd been born with both, but since he'd been embraced it was a lot more difficult to create art so he had the tendency to just appreciate it instead.

Such was Leo's next question. "A love and a talent. Do you create art too, or just collect it?"

The food was disappearing bite by bite, and eventually, the waitress came to take the plates away. Being left with just his coffee, Leo looked down into it and curled his hands around it. The cafe wasn't crowded, but it was alive with sound. Regardless, Leo was unable to be distracted, focus entirely on Hiro.

"I use to create it," Hiro replied honestly, seeing no reason why he should try to lie about it. "I guess I lost my creative drive, though. Sometimes spurts will come, still. And I'll paint something, but those moments are growing further and far between."

It bothered him, and it was actually a little obvious as he drummed his fingertips against the tabletop with a soft sigh.

"Appreciating is sometimes hard. Wishing you'd been able to make something so beautiful, but knowing you didn't."
