Leo, Hiro

When Leo had gotten home that night, he'd stared at the phone number on his hand for a long time. The man who'd written it there had been incredibly attractive, but so much so that it made Leo suspicious. People weren't that alluring without some sort of nefarious purpose, or at least they weren't in his world. Eventually though, Leo had scratched down the phone number onto a slip of paper and tucked it under the phonebook before he went to go wash up for bed.

A couple of weeks later, it wasn't that Leo had forgotten about the encounter, but he was surprised to see the number flutter out onto the floor when he picked up the phonebook to order pizza. Glancing down at it, he rolled his bottom lip in between his teeth thoughtfully. After a good five minutes of staring, he reached down to pick it up and grabbed the phone in one bold move. He told himself it was because Hiro was suspicious and he was intent on finding out more about him. Really, it was because Leo just wanted to see him again. Dialing the number, he listened to the phone ring.

Thirty minutes. It seemed as if he'd gotten what he wanted, but a dart of anxiety ran through him before he could respond. "Yeah. Yeah, half hour works fine." His mind was already racing about what it was he should wear.

When he hung up, he glanced at his watch and went into his room to attack his closet. He didn't know which would be worse, looking like he'd tried to hard or looking like a total slob. There was a high likelihood of both. Leo had little to no fashion sense, and before this moment, he'd staunchly defended the fact that such a skill was utterly superfluous. Finally deciding on casual slacks and a Pink Floyd t-shirt, Leo headed down to the street so he could walk the few blocks to the cafe.

Arriving shortly thereafter, he grabbed a booth and looked around. Hiro was going to look out of place here. Then again, Leo figured the man looked out of place lots of places.

The tone of Leo's voice let Hiro in on the fact that the man was a little anxious. Not only that, but Hiro could feel it dripping through the phone. He had to admit, though, if he was human he probably would have been feeling a little anxious, too. In all reality, he did feel something but it had been such a long time since he had felt anything like it that it was difficult to put his finger on just what it was.

"See you in a bit," he said softly before he hung up his phone and tossed it on the bed.

It wasn't difficult for him to choose what he wanted to wear. He'd always been somewhat fashionable, though he had the tendency to keep everything very simple. Simple worked. Sophisticated and simple were his two main stylistic choices. He settled on a pair of navy slacks with pinstripes and a thin white button up dress shirt. He left the cuffs lazily undone, rolling them up to his elbows loosely, and didn't bother with the last two buttons or the first two, either. After he slipped on a pair of black shoes, he grabbed his cell again and pocketed it before he headed out of his room to grab his keys. His fingertips moved over the buttons of the alarm system by the front door and once he was outside of his flat he locked it up, then headed outside.

The air was cool, but still not cold enough that him arriving with no jacket would seem too odd and out of place. The walk was actually calming and it didn't take long at all. Leo was easy to spot, and Hiro smiled faintly before he headed over to where the man was sitting.

"Hello," he greeted as he slipped into the seat across from Leo. His hair was a rich auborn color this time, rather than the stark blonde it had been before when he'd first met Leo.

They said that when leeches latched on to have a meal, they made the skin go numb so that the host didn't know what was happening. Not that Hiro was doing so on purpose, but the man's presence was a mixture of numbing and thrilling, causing a unique swirl of emotion in Leo's body when he looked over at him. With an excellent memory for detail, he picked up on Hiro's sense of style quickly and was surprised by the change of hair. Mostly, however, he was just pleased to see him and it showed on his face despite his usual glowering expression.

The waitress, seeing that the second had arrived, hopped to their table and Leo launched in on a rather large food order and when he described the cup of coffee he wanted, he had to use his hands as if he was holding a bowling ball between them.

Hiro, unlike Leo, didn't order a huge meal. He'd fed earlier on in the evening, a willing participant and his cheeks were even a little bit more vibrant. He did order a cup of coffee, though, not that he needed or wanted one, it was just for appearances really.

Once the waitress was gone, Hiro let his blue eyes flickered back towards Leo and he smiled a little bit.

"You must be hungry," he teased.

"I'm always hungry." He confessed. Leo's metabolism was a blessing considering his love of food. "You're really just going to drink coffee? They have amazing pie here. You should get a slice--my treat." Leo didn't exactly mind being the only one eating, but he thought it was a little strange Hiro wasn't at least munching on something.

The coffee came first, of course and Leo's mug was considerably bigger than Hiro's. They knew him pretty well here. Instantly bringing the cup to his mouth, he had a swallow. When he set it back down on the table, his face was a mask of pleasure, that first taste of really amazing java doing wonderful things to his tastebuds.

"I ate all ready," Hiro said casually as he leaned back in his chair, allowing himself to just sort of lounge comfortably as he focused his gaze upon Leo's face. "But thank you."

It wasn't hard to admire Leo, in fact it was quite easy. Hiro liked his dark hair, and how round his eyes were. Their color was warm too, with a distinct hardness about them, though. He couldn't remember the last time he'd met someone so guarded.

"So, you're a night owl, I take it?" he asked, reaching for his cup of coffee when it arrived.

"Oh," was all Leo said to the fact that Hiro had already eaten. It was believable enough, certainly. It didn't seem to hinder him from digging into his own meal when it arrived. He ate with zeal, enjoying every bite.

"A night owl, yeah--you could say that. Kind of when the bad guys come out, you know?"

"Yeah," Hiro said slowly with a faint smile, his eyes lighting up with slight amusement. "I'm just a night owl, no particular reason aside from the fact that it's just..." He paused, wetting his lips as he traced his fingertips along the rim of his coffee cup. "In my nature."

Quirking a brow, Leo laughed. "Did you think I was calling you one of the bad guys? Maybe being a bad guy is in your nature and that's why you stay up so late?"

He shook his head, holding up his hand, not requiring an answer to that question. He was just joking anyway. As much as he wanted to pin something terrible on Hiro, just to avoid being attracted to him, Leo couldn't manage to find anything but mild infatuation for him. "So how does one get into art?"

Leo's comment got a mild laugh out of Hiro and he simply shook his head some as he let his shoulders droop in a completely relaxed state.

"I didn't, no," he answered, the smile on his face a little warmer than most of his smiles were. "I think one is just born into art. How does one get into detective work? I think that is a much better question."

Leo gave Hiro a look as if to say: Seriously? "Born into art? Way to try and change the focus back to me. But no one is born into anything. Everyone chooses what it is they really want to do, parents are just a convenient excuse." Leo held onto the belief that whether people were miserable or happy, it was their choice to be so.

He was keen to find out more about Hiro and he wasn't about to get sidetracked by talking about himself, even if it was tempting to tell the guy his life story.

A warm laugh slipped past Hiro's lips, and he simply shook his head as he let one of his hands move to rest ontop of the table, next to his cup. He could feel the warmth from the coffee radiating against his skin, and he liked the way it felt.

"I just meant that... a person is usually born with a love of art or a talent for it," he explained, "That's all." And he'd been born with both, but since he'd been embraced it was a lot more difficult to create art so he had the tendency to just appreciate it instead.

Such was Leo's next question. "A love and a talent. Do you create art too, or just collect it?"

The food was disappearing bite by bite, and eventually, the waitress came to take the plates away. Being left with just his coffee, Leo looked down into it and curled his hands around it. The cafe wasn't crowded, but it was alive with sound. Regardless, Leo was unable to be distracted, focus entirely on Hiro.

"I use to create it," Hiro replied honestly, seeing no reason why he should try to lie about it. "I guess I lost my creative drive, though. Sometimes spurts will come, still. And I'll paint something, but those moments are growing further and far between."

It bothered him, and it was actually a little obvious as he drummed his fingertips against the tabletop with a soft sigh.

"Appreciating is sometimes hard. Wishing you'd been able to make something so beautiful, but knowing you didn't."
