Re: Inuzuka Kiba Part 3

By the time he was sixteen, Kiba was drummer in a small rock band with several friends. It was at this time that the Inuzuka also took up vocals, leading a few songs at some of their gigs. Little by little, his impetuous behavior returned. When confronted with a view differing from his own he usually spoke out regarding the issue, though Kiba rarely got into spats with his close friends.

The end of high school brought about even more excitement for him. It meant he would finally get away from his small community and out to see the world. The happy discussion about their plans to take their band across the country turned into a heated debate over who would sing lead. The leader of the band slash main vocalist snidely claimed Kiba’s voice was "...not as well developed. So he best keep his whiny ass back behind the drum set". Bad words led to worse and before long the teens broke into an all out fistfight. In the end, the group sided with the leader and booted Kiba out the band. Even without his band Kiba wasn't beaten. Returning home long enough to pack a few items and tucking his drumsticks in his pocket, he was determined to set off and see the world anyway. He'd never had a real job though other than caring for the animals in his mom’s kennel and playing gigs with his band. His mother never paid him for his work at the kennel and as far as Kiba was concerned it was his responsibility as man of the house to help so he never expected payment from his mom anyway. Not to mention that playing with his band had never felt like what he thought real work was like.

Inexperience aside, the seventeen year old left his mom a note and hugged his sister goodbye and left home with just the clothes on his back. It was not easy saying goodbye but Kiba felt he had no other choice. Sure it was impulsive and he was angry but getting away from the small town that night seemed like the perfect idea. Kiba had always wanted something more than what his surroundings offered. New experiences for Kiba are as necessary as breathing to others. He had believed the band would be enough but now it was no longer a possibility. But he had made the decision to finally see the world and he wasn't going to let one little set back stop him. If by chance he ended up in a place he really liked one day, then maybe he would settle down for a while and enjoy himself.

After a few months of wandering on his own, Kiba landed a job on a construction site that paid good enough for him to settle down a bit and enroll in some college courses. Never one to remain in one place long Kiba changed jobs a few times but determined to understand what it takes to be a musician he struggled through his college. When a place no longer held his interest, he switches schools on a steady trek across country, not sure where he was going or whom he would meet along the way. That suited Kiba just fine. He enjoyed the adventure all the same. His stage name circulated among small bands in a few places he visited. Snagging a gig for a few bucks usually help keep food in his belly.

Not really a vagrant but damn close Kiba sent letters home whenever he remained in one place long enough to get a return reply. On one particular occasion, Kiba sent home a large package containing his associate degree in marketing and music. The single post card converted photo showing him grinning for his mother and sister holding up three fingers representing how long it had taken to get his degree. The return letter arrived a mere two days later by special carrier.

A delivery trucked pulled up in front of the hotel while Kiba sat at the bus stop near the road. He paid little attention to the rather annoyed carrier as he spoke with the hotel manager. Kiba had his headphones in his ears, he hadn't heard a word. The commotion would have gone unnoticed if Kiba hadn't felt a tug at his pocket soon followed by hot wetness. Kiba jumped up with the scent of urine filling his nostrils as the wet sensation traveled down his thigh.

Nose lowered to the ground between two rather front paws seemingly too large for it's body, a small bundle of white fur barked his tail wiggling wildly. Kiba quickly scooped up the pup and brought it nose to nose. He arched a brow curious how the pup had gotten there unnoticed, why he'd peed on him and where exactly his owner was. At that moment, the anxious carrier followed closely by the hotel manager approached the pair. After the recieving the package the carrier had been trying to deliver, Kiba stuffed the squirming pup in his shirt while reading the enclosed letter from his mom. His mother thought that since he has a degree now that it is time to show some responsibility. Apparently, a bitch and her pups had been dumped at his mom’s kennel and she needed to find homes for them. The last of the puppies was the runt that no one wanted. So she'd sent him to Kiba telling him in the letter that he could keep him or come home for a visit and return the mutt.

Kiba grinned at his new companion, his sharp canines making an appearance. Nudging the sleeping pup in his jacket, he decided he would go home some other time. For now he'd keep the puppy and they would hang out for a while. Turned out the bus Kiba had been waiting on did not allow pets. So Kiba ended up hitching a ride to the next town where he made camp for the two of them. After spending money on some basics to keep his new friend pest free, he really did not want to spend anymore on a room. He eventually named the wily pup. He chose Akamaru because of the pups favorite pastime, rolling in red dust no matter where they happened upon it regardless if he'd just had a bath or not.

Personality, Likes & Dislikes:

Inuzuka Kiba is the personification of impetuosity. He has a short fuse that readily lands him into brawls constantly. He tends to boast about his exploits to anyone in his proximity. Although at heart Kiba is generally modest, he rarely ends a conversation, either determined to prove his point or to understand the other person’s position. The dog lover often lands himself in awkward situations due in part to his curiosity. This is usually the root of most of his physical altercations.

With age, Kiba does sometimes manage to tame some of his rebellious streak, choosing instead to utilize his verbal skills to avoid most scraps. He is a happy man, keeping the peace is usually his objective, even if his temperament often draws the wrong type of attention. Kiba is able to work around most people. He is not a coward by any definition he enjoys a fair fight whenever a situation is beyond any other remedy. Fair meaning one on one, Kiba does not adhere to any particular fighting style. The boy is an ‘animal,’ hence, the nickname his friends coined before high school.

Kiba is also fun loving, nature enthusiast; the great outdoors is his haven. He prefers the forest and tree top ceiling to the claustrophobic confines of an apartment. This keeps him constantly moving from one location to another. It’s a wanderlust he more than likely inherited from his father, who did not stick around long enough for him to remember the man’s name. The only son in his family, Kiba feels a need to be a better man than his father was to his mother.

Growing up, Kiba was not immune to some teasing from his peers. One of the school yard bullies favored weak points were the oddity of Kiba's overlong canines that at some point became vamp acceptable. Though Kiba is the first to scoff at the idea he's into that type of thing, he found it amusing all the same. He also had to endure ridicule from his peers growing up fatherless. He felt abandoned by the man. Kiba never mentioned this insecurity to his mother. As the oldest son, he did not want to worry her about his emotional turmoil over the abandonment. Kiba’s mother has an extreme temper. He imagines that she will take her frustration out on him, so he hid his sorrow about the old man. This cumulates into Kiba’s need to defend anyone he feels is ridiculed, abandoned for the most part loners. Usually leading to a verbal exchange with those responsible and if circumstances warrant physical altercation.

His attitude can seem clueless at times although once people get to know him it’s not difficult to understand his quirky questions are sincere. Abstract thinking confounds Kiba. He is more likely to take theoretical concepts literally; it is a charming innocence. Some believe his jovial take life as it comes temperament indicates his lack of intelligence. On the contrary, Kiba has attended some college it is a personal choice that he approaches each new person without preconceived ideations. He has no idea what he is looking for but knows he will discover it if he keeps his nose to the ground and his attitude positive. Wandering from place to place, he will take odd jobs whenever possible. Kiba is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He actually prefers manual labor to sitting behind a desk shuffling papers. He will not endure for any length of time a job that requires more brainpower than physical strength.

He enjoys the simple things in life. As long as he has food for his dog and himself and a warm place to sleep, Kiba is satisfied. Therefore, it never takes much to satisfy the Inuzuka. He can make friends easily; will develop his own opinion over time, if his friend Akamaru does not give him a reason to feel differently. Kiba relies heavily on his oversize pup to keep him on the straight and narrow since Kiba takes people at face value. He usually needs overt actions before he realizes someone is untrustworthy.

Likes: hamburgers, chicken, fish, eating, campfires, crotches, his teeth, laughing, shy people, funny faces, dogs, hair, candy, swimming, drums, music, vocals, dancing, beer, sleeping outside, dirt, working with his hands, sex, nice scents.

Dislikes: bubblegum, bad breath, bad teeth, his teeth, flying cock roaches, smelly crotches, cracks in the sidewalk, smoky cars, bullies, mental work, taking pills, ugly toes, being hungry.

So what do you think Akamaru!? We’re finally here! Reno is really beautiful and smell the fresh mountain air! That’s the scent of opportunity right there buddy! Ahh... no that’s probably a just a cat big guy. Don’t worry buddy we probably won’t run into any. I mean this is the city with some of the finest Asian restaurants around, no way you’ll find too many stray cats. Joking!!! We wont eat any cats... today.

Where should we get something to eat? That old lady on the bus, you know, the one that smelled like broccoli. I couldn’t even eat my bologna sandwich. I kept thinking a big crunchy green thing was going to roll down my throat. How exactly do old people get that smell? I mean is it something they develop over time or is it like a special prize produce trophy?

I bet that’s it! You ever notice whenever we help an old person cross the street, what’s on the top of the bag? Definitely not chicken. Some of them don’t have teeth. It’s kind of sad. Fuck that Akamaru, I’m never losing my teeth! I'll keep 'em forever!

We won’t get on a bus for a while but next time I use the blind man act to get you on the bus walk real close to me. You left me hanging and that girl chewing bubblegum grabbed me! And Maru you know how much I hate gum and she just kept blowing bubbles and stretching it with her fingers. Why do people do that? I am a blind man. How is trying to be cute by pulling stretching candy out your mouth gonna get you in my pants? I know I’m not really blind Akamaru! I’m just saying… you know it’s just wrong.

I’m not mad at you buddy but if you had just waited she wouldn’t have told me her number like twelve times! Blind not deaf. There’s a difference. Then because she thought I'll forget or something, as if I was trying to remember, she wrote it on my hand! SEE‼!! I’ll get us a room just for a hot shower cause tomorrow we need to tighten our belts and get a job.

Third Person

The day after hopping off a bus with Akamaru, Kiba pulled out his finest pair of blue jeans and nice pullover shirt that could pass as new. He wanted to make a good impression on any potential employers so he cleaned up at the local public gym before taking Akamaru out to breakfast. He found a small diner that offered outdoor seating and ordered a plate of beef sausage for his buddy and sausage with eggs for himself. Not long after his coffee and food arrived, a man in his late fifties joined him asking if he needed a place to stay.

Akamaru sat up cocking his head curiously at the man before resuming his meal. Kiba grinned broadly wondering if he gave off the little lost lamb look or maybe it’s his backpack. It did seem odd to have a random man ask him if he need a room. Kiba's bright eyes narrowed a bit, wondering if the old man were making a pass at him. He scrunched up his nose before he could stop himself.

“No, son don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not that way,” the nearly balding man offered face blushing. “I own a Bed and Breakfast not far from here, not much to look at.” He continued flustered. “My names Baltimore Henderson, I see you have a dog and most of the places around here won’t take him. My price is reasonable and I can really use the company.”

“Well thanks! We really need a place for a few days.” Kiba exclaimed rather loudly and then ruffled the thick fur on Akamaru’s back. "Maru appreciates it too you really saved our butts.”

The owner wheezed out, “Oh it’s a big help to me, so thank you.”

It turned out that the old man owned a make shift bed and breakfast that was a one hundred year old colonial building with a sagging wooden porch and peeling paint. It certainly wasn't what people usually expected when they heard the term B&B. It had a bit of a musky smell, the made Kiba and Akamaru scrunch up their nose the second they climbed out of the owner’s truck.

They took a quick look around ending up in the backyard after the owner showed Kiba his room. The owner pointed out the pin his dog once used.

“Your dog is welcome to take up a spot in there,” he sniffed. Kiba blinked in surprise. He never let Akamaru sleep outside if he was inside. Somehow it just seemed wrong. “Uh… you ok?” Kiba didn’t know how to say what was on his mind especially with the man looking so upset.

“Come here,” he waved a withered hand for Kiba and Akamaru to follow him.

A couple hours later, Kiba found himself surrounded by pictures and reminiscing with the other man over a dog that had died nearly a decade ago. It could have fooled Kiba because the house still smelled strongly of the animal. It broke Kiba’s heart to see how devoted the man was to his long lost buddy, but seriously disturbed him when Akamaru got his attention by licking his ear.

“What?” Kiba shivered the lick had always made him feel wiggly inside.

The dog ducked his head looking over his shoulder at the fireplace mantel. Kiba's sharp blue eyes followed Akamaru’s gaze falling directly on the stuffed pooch.

He leaped up from the sofa. “You know I better go and check out some of the local places. You know get a job.” He nodded shifting on both feet and scratching behind his head anxiously.

Kiba left quickly followed closely by Akamaru both eager for fresh air after having spent so much time in the over-furnished and stuffy old house. Taxidermy confounded Kiba. It seemed wrong to treat your best friend like that after they died. To Kiba, once the animal had passed away, he or she was gone and should be put in their final resting place.

Akamaru nipped Kiba’s fingers, whining a bit as if he too felt bad for the long gone animal. Kiba knelled down petting the pup’s large head. “Don’t worry big guy, that’ll never happen to you!”

It took some coxing but he eventually calmed Akamaru down with a promise of steak after their first payday. Feeling more upbeat Kiba set off in search of a job, certain something will pan out once he stretched his legs about town.

Several hours later Kiba sat on the sagging front porch watching Akamaru enjoy a can of dog food given to him because he helped unload a truck at a local deli. Everywhere he searched the answer was the same, no work sorry. The fancy casino hotels were no different. He sighed with only enough in his pocket to cover him a few days he should probably check out of the bed and breakfast, but camping left him rather dirty to get a job he needed to look his best. Kiba decided to give it one more day before he told the owner, Mr. Henderson, his goodbyes.

That night after taking a walk with Akamaru, he returned to see the old man fussing with a trash bin, as he dragged the oversize receptacle across the yard.

“Hold up, I’ll get that for ya Mr. H,” Kiba quickly assisted the old man and in no time he lined up three large cans along the sidewalk. A toothy grin brightened his face all day he’d been itching to get his hands dirty. “Hey you have anything else, I’m a hard worker.”

It turned out as Mr. Henderson had several jobs suited for a strong back. Kiba couldn’t have been more thrilled. That night he moved out two busted loveseats, stripped wallpaper in the dining room, emptied an old rusted water heater, and replaced it with a dusty newer model. Akamaru even helped scatter a litter of possums under the front porch.

The next day Kiba set to work, repairing the porch, following up with scrapping peeling paint off the side of the house. He discovered usable white paint in the basement, and set to work painting the entire house over the passing weeks.

Bronzed and beaming a month later, Kiba stood at the bus stop saying his goodbyes to the old man. Kiba extended a calloused hand after lowering his backpack. “Nice meeting you Mr. H! Thanks for taking me and Akamaru in, we had fun.”

His eyes tearing up Mr. Henderson gripped Kiba’s hand tugging him into a fatherly embrace.

Akamaru whined as the bus honked. Kiba ducked his head wiping his face while sniffing. “I’ll try to come back up this way you take care.” He grinned again rubbing his partner’s furry head. “Ok Maru lets go, this driver is a friend of Mr. H so you can ride big guy!”

Offering a final so long, the two filed on with the other passengers, once seated Kiba stared out the window. He felt good it was time to move on and thanks to Mr. H there is a possibility he can work with a company in Reno. Kiba squirmed in his seat, pulling out the clipped article and reading over it again, he nudged Akamaru who seemed rather with a woman with a large basket in her lap.

“Hey it’s not nice to stare,” Kiba stared at the woman curious too. Then shaking himself out of his daze he showed the article to his dog snickering about no experience and the chance of a lifetime.
