While there were things about your application that we liked, and did find parts of it to ve very creative. However, at the moment there's just not enough elaboration.

1) The background and personality feel a little short. Give us more elaboration on Shikamaru's years through school, and how he felt about being labeled as a genius.
2) Have you discussed this background with the Ino-mun? Please either discuss it with the mun, or remove it from his background (or replace Ino with an NPC).
3) Also to be pointed out is the text message from Ino in the third person sample, this is godmodding and not allowed.

With these in mind, we're going to have to put your application in pending for the moment. You'll have one week to rewrite certain areas and add more elaboration, and then repost.

Background History: Shikamaru Nara was brought up on a deer-sanctuary run by his father, Shikaku, in Helena, Montana. For several generations their family has been running a successful conservation and breeding centre for endangered subspecies of Sika deer, Dybowski's sika deer and Formosan sika deer. As a child, Shikamaru enjoyed helping his father out with the herds and was content to do little at school. Due to his horribly lazy attitude, put in no effort whatsoever, safe in the knowledge that he had a secure future inheriting the family business. As a result, his grades were horrible and his teachers wrote him off as being utterly useless and doomed to a life of flipping burgers. He spent more time in detention for not paying attention than he did on his work outside class. However, at the age of twelve he surprised everyone, including himself, when a schoolwide IQ test revealed that he had an IQ in excess of 200. To the exasperation of all his teachers, and his mother, this newly acquired knowledge did not motivate him to do better, as Shikamaru was still as lazy and unmotivated as he had always been. To him, the fact that he was now technically a genius mean exactly nothing, only that now people seemed to expect more from him and were failing to hide their disappointment when he underperformed. The problem was motivation, and if Shikamaru couldn’t be bothered to do something, then it would not get done. This behaviour carried on until his mother lost her cool and ended up screaming at him that he would be thrown out of the house and cut off without a penny unless he got his act together and did something. Grudgingly, Shikamaru put a little effort into things and actually started to do homework. His grades went from abysmal to acceptable, and he continued to live uneventfully at home with his parents up until he graduated high school.
Shikamaru had absolutely no desire to prove himself, he simply couldn’t see the point. While other kids at school had aspirations of amazing, if not improbable careers, Shikamaru had never held the usual lofty childhood dreams of being an astronaut or a rock-star. Fame and recognition were never something he craved; he didn’t try out for sports teams, despite being good at quite a few games, he never started a band and never dreamed of dating the head cheerleader. Occasionally, he would help out some of the younger kids in town by volunteering to read to them at the library at weekends and listening to them read in return. Unlike most boys his age, he was a sucker for little kids and, despite the irony and never having amounted to much himself throughout his school career, he wanted to do all he could to help them achieve their full potential. He himself was quite content to watch all the absurdities of high school pass him by as he kept his head down and got on with things. He had friends, and while he wasn’t Mr. Popularity, he was incredibly loyal and dedicated to his friends and they were loyal back. All he wanted, truthfully, was to get a little house, not too far from the farm, where he could get married to an average girl, have two kids fairly quickly (a girl, then a boy), take over from his dad running the farm when he retired and then wait until his son was old enough to run the business so that he could take it on, and Shikamaru could retire and play games of shougi and watch the clouds. As he got older, he realised that in order to do this he would probably have to find some kind of paying work in order to keep a family in relative comfort- deer didn’t pay well- but there was no way he could see himself working a nine to five. It was just too boring and troublesome.

Due to the nagging of his mother and childhood friend Ino, and quiet entreaties from his father and other best friend, Shikamaru grudgingly sat university entrance examinations and not only aced the tests but was offered full scholarships to most of them. Even with such a remarkable and promising future laid out at his feet, the perennially lazy Shikamaru was on the verge of turning down all the offers until his father persuaded him to defer entry and go out and spend a year deciding what he wanted to do with himself, urging him to get away from the familiarity of the farm and to see more of the world and try to find his place in it. Maybe something would jump out and grab his attention and stir something in him for the first time in his life.
"The world is at your feet, son. You owe it to yourself to find out where you belong.”
The funny thing was that Shikamaru had got himself a germ of an idea in his head about what he had wanted to do. He wanted to do something that he could do from home and get paid for that would still allow him the same freedom as he got from lying on his back and staring up at the clouds. Interestingly, his time spent at the library had given him an interest in stories (his mother had hoped that it had sparked an interest in him to be a teacher). Maybe someday he’d write a book or two, but he didn’t know if the same story could keep his interest for however many chapters and pages. Scripts, on the other hand, were a different matter. Shikamaru wanted to write, and he wanted to write for the movies.
He must have sent a dozen scripts out to various studios when he finally got an answer back from one, offering him a position as an apprentice writer for Feel Good, Inc. Without thinking, Shikamaru packed up his stuff, threw it in the back of his car and drove from his hometown to Reno for what could be his big break.
Well... everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Personality, Likes & Dislikes: At first glance, Shikamaru appears to be just another lazy bum who’s spent his life mooching off his parents. This is only half true- he would never dispute being a lazy bum, but hasn’t ever taken anything off his parents. He is also frighteningly intelligent, having a genius level IQ, but because he’s so lazy, he can’t be bothered to advertise this particular trait of his. This doesn’t stop him from making very astute observations and quickly drawing the correct conclusions left right and centre though, but that’s just the way that he is. He isn’t flashy or cocky, he’s pretty quiet and likes his own company, but will do just about anything for his friends. When Shikamaru does deign something worthy of effort, he will do it and do it thoroughly and cleverly, and if he happens to be complimented on it, it really won’t inflate his head too much. (He finds egotism too troublesome.) This of course means that Shikamaru’s career as a writer is likely to be marred with long delays in his productivity until he can find someone to whip him into shape and nag him into sticking to deadlines.
Shikamaru’s favourite thing in the world is just lying on his back and watching the clouds. This is closely followed by his enjoyment of strategy games like chess and especially shougi- a chess like game from Japan. He not only enjoys these games, but is nigh on unbeatable- the only person to ever defeat him is his father Shikaku. His favourite food is mackerel, but he also loves Korean barbecue; getting some with his best friend is a lifelong habit. He taught himself the guitar at a young age, finding an old one of his father’s discarded in the barn and taking it on, and likes to play uncomplicated, old stuff. Sometimes he sings too, but never in public: too much hassle with the mics and the crowds etc. He has an eclectic taste in music, not preferring one genre over another and just listening to what he likes- usually on his iPod while watching the clouds on a warm patch of grass. As long as the song is interesting and the lyrics make sense, he doesn’t care who sings it. His favourite writer is Agatha Christie, because her books kept him guessing and entertained. He’s something of an animal lover. Deer, unsurprisingly, are his favourite animal, but he has a soft spot for cats- his family own a fat, lazy calico who spends the majority of his time sleeping on Shikamaru’s bed at home.
Shikamaru doesn’t like things that are more hassle than they’re worth. Other than that, he’s pretty easy going. Being incredibly loyal to people that he cares about, he won’t stand for people being needlessly cruel to his friends. He claims not to like bossy women, but... seeing as he’s spent most of his life surrounded by them, it’s highly likely that he is somewhat receptive to their charms. His least favourite Disney movie is ‘Bambi.’ He has a practical approach to animal conservation, understanding the need for humane culling, but cannot stand illegal hunting, which has come from a lifetime of raising endangered deer and having to keep poachers off his family’s land. His least favourite food is boiled eggs.

(Having thought about it, would it be possible to make him 21 instead of 20?)

Sorry for the delay in processing your application, the mods have been busy this past week.

It's fine to make him 21, but we have one final issue before you can be officially accepted. Please either talk to the Ino-mun about including her in Shikamaru's history, or remove that point from it. But other than that, looks good! As soon as you get back to us, we can accept you.
