Why did you bend and break...
We never see how close to the edges of things we are, until we're standing there with the wind in our face and the yawning chasm of the unknown before our eyes. It's easy to pretend until that point we've been entirely in control of ourselves. When we've really been gripping the wheel and holding on for dear life while struggling in vain to make the car go the other way. In reality, you're just kidding yourself with the oldest shell game humanity has to offer.

Denial.

Tyki had lost control. Completely. Utterly. For a moment in time his ability to reason and think beyond instincts had been blasted to dust. The result was a mess even he was ashamed of.

And no one would care. He was just a weapon sheathe for the part of him...the memory long gone that was the real power. All the times it had been taken for granted, considered as much as a part of him as his fingers, his heart, and his very soul were suddenly turned over and over in his mind. They spun through his recollections like a black and white movie without any traces of sound. Just the pictures. The bloody gruesome things that they were.

Or maybe that was the bits of flesh and bone clinging to him, helped to stick by the coating of blood all over him. A tooth slid down into his line of vision but, he didn't bother to pick it off. He supposed it was a testament to everything that had happened since he'd come to this hellish place. And it all started with the boy.

Images played again in his mind of his hand reaching inside one white haired Exorcist with the intent to rip a heart out. Clean. Simple. Controlled.

Right. Like his blood hadn't been singing with the prospect of the fear generated when his victims realized he was all powerful, absolute. Their God that decided whether they lived or died.

He didn't want to think about it. Or how he'd love to shred that offending arm that made everything so complicated. The brat relied on it too much.

And what about you?

He didn't answer himself. It was better not to entertain those thoughts. Especially when he was still feeling a smoldering sense of rage coiled and twisting just beneath the surface. Only this time, more than large bear would be torn to shreds.

Ah. Speaking of that...

He glanced behind him.

It had been a towering bear once, almost as big as he was. The thing partly phased through the tree branches and trunk to hold it in place, couldn't be called anything with a name or label. It was just shredded meat and organs barely hanging onto the skin. What was left of it that hung together was in the tree. For a good six feet or so in every direction around the tree, lay the pieces of the rest. And all this because he lost control when he'd been in the middle of crushing its windpipe.

The gender was even a mystery. He hadn't bothered with it and now well...

No point.

There was no sense in hanging around either. He didn't notice his device falling out of his pocket and opening on the grass. It wouldn't have mattered anyways.

He didn't care.

Tyki wandered aimlessly, without a thought or reason until he found himself at the edge of a river bank. Thoughts of Rhode wove through him then, reminding him that tracking mud, or dirt, or anything into his house (because it was his first) would get him reprimanded.

...

And that was how he found himself sitting by the river side and watching the fish swim by without doing anything to clean himself up. The blood slid sluggishly down his frame, staining his clothes, and making the little peaceful spot a vision out of the darkest nightmares.

But he didn't care.

[He tenses at the statement, his eyes narrowing further and back muscles tense.] Do I look like I care?

[No nicknames, no teasing, just a flat tone. He'd lost control and now, everything was unhinging.]

Why are you here? Just for that?

[He starts laughing of all things. Not sounds of mirth, or joy. Twisted, parodies of it. He presses his bloodied hands to his forehead and he folds in on himself from it.]

So that's it!

That's what it was all along...

[All restrains are shattered, the raw blood-lust and sheer rage unleashed in a torrent of violet energy to color the air and send the birds flying as fast as their wings will take them away from the monster in the woods.

There's no man in the depths of the shadow that whirls around, cold and unfeeling if you ignored the betrayal in his eyes and the hiss before his teeth are gritted.]

What am I? Just a replacement for that bastard until he came back?! IS THAT ALL I WAS?!

[His voice rises until it's like thunder against the senses. And falls quiet, soft yet still so angry. Almost hateful.]

First, is constantly gone, shying away from even looking at me....

Only to send you here like a dog obeying a master you won't even serve! [There is no mercy in those eyes.]

Answer me. What am I?

[Just a pawn. Just a piece easily discarded when the real one comes along. He curls his black fingers into fists and never looks away from the target of his fury. Then he lunges, clearing the distance in a move too fast to be human one of those fists streaking for anything it can hit.]

[Still, on instinct, Allen grabs the fist aimed for him before it hits. Though his teeth grit at bracing from being staggered by the force, he leans into it when Tyki pushes back.

Left on right.

When did you become like this, Tyki.]

[Something flashes hard in his eyes for a moment, determination and dedication and--sadness? Before they steel again, holding his smaller frame against the strain.] Tyki Mikk! [Shouted. It could be an angry reproach, or--]

[A squeeze of the other's fist, shifting his feet to plant his weight more firmly.] ... Tyki Mikk.

[Still leaning hard, but it's more for emphasis, with clarity than with anger.

It's frustration but understanding. You know this, you accused him of the same.]

[He pushes against Allen's hold and leans in with a low growl in his throat that threatens to come free. He could let go, of his humanity, of everything and let Joyd swallow it all. He'd be out of pain. Out of suffering and everything would go away.

There's a whirlwind in his eyes of so many emotions but the strongest of all is betrayal. It is the heart of the storm in him and why really, why he's swinging right now at all.]

[Both hands gripping Tyki's--like a mollusk holding on to prove a point as much as to prevent them from landing.] Weren't you the one who told me...

[Pushing metaphorically and not.] Because they might be seeing someone else?

[It could almost be mistaken for raw, the tone in his voice, except it's not quite. It's backed with splash of emotions so strong it makes his voice raise, but it's tempered despite it.]

[It's empathy and sad from it.]

I'm
Allen Walker and you're Tyki Mikk. It doesn't matter what else there is! Isn't that what you tried to tell me? Tame whatever else there is and live on anyway as yourself?

Tame it all. Make it bow to you. His own words yet. All he could see was Rhode stepping away from him. And the empty house and how she lavished attention on others. But it wasn't the attention that bothered him. It was how he'd been shut out. told to obey and bow to orders to her when there was nothing family about the emptiness.

He shuts his eyes and grits his teeth. He wants to roar, to do something and there's a lot there.]

[Some might say it'd be easier, wiser to just let Tyki go like that. Let him disappear into the woods, let Rhode continue to slowly break down and fray at home, breaking things apart and both of them dividing themselves from each other.

(Caramel and hot chocolate with strawberries...)

It's better if Noah aren't unified, isn't that what any of the other Exorcists might say? The Order?

But then... maybe that's why he's Allen Walker first now, if still an Exorcist in his own right.

Why would she ask me to look for you if that's true? It was your leaving that hurt her, not anyone else's.

Gritting his teeth and squirming for a moment at the pin, his left hand coming up to grab Tyki's (hard, punctuating), but he doesn't try to shove him off just yet.]
And I'm telling you it's you she's upset about!

[Hard to breath and wincing, but not batting an eye.] Not anyone else and not him.

[He's shouting back now, leaning forward actually with his other arm bracing him up. Sparking but only tightening his grip on Tyki's hand. Playing with fire, maybe. Pushing all of his rather miserable luck, but:] Of course she contacted me. If you leave then who else is there?! [Which he—absolutely doesn't want but such is how it is. Suddenly. He doesn't want to hold back the torrent. Because everything he's saying isn't getting through and the furious roar of power rolling through him reminds him to never forget. The hate, the rage, and that's when he spots something else.

Allen has no mark.

And he came from talking to Rhode. The world dissolves in his mind to a cold featureless plain. But in reality there's suddenly a silence in the rage, in everything but his arms harden like armor and he drives sharp claws down aiming to tear into a shoulder.]

You know where she was?

Not where I was at all.

[The violet energy rolling over his back to snap at the ground. And if he gets that blood he wants he's going to twist his fingers because he wants it to hurt.]

I didn't leave then. I stayed.

In that empty house.

[Loyal. Loyal even when she didn't want to look at him. Loyal when she avoided him. Until now.]

Tell me now Walker.

Was it before or after she had you that she asked you to find me?

[Take a second and think about that boy. What a better way to keep you roped and still use the pawn for something. Make it feel like someone cares. Normally he didn't think about these things but, all he'd been left with is his own thoughts. And the hand on the throat is tightening, with sharp claw tips trying to dig into flesh.]

[Claws shred his coat and hit because he doesn't try to block them. Why? Maybe because he has a point to prove. Maybe because he still knows—believes—you won't kill him. Promises to the Earl who's no longer here? (The Earl who Rhode... saw in him.) Whatever understanding or delicately balanced trust-and-not from working together for months?

It's scary, though. Scary because even if he pushes himself past it he remembers what it was like to see—feel—his arm being broken down. That Tyki could try it again so easily if he wanted to.

(But you can't break his Innocence without first killing him.)

Though cut him and he does still bleed—does still cry out, even if he grits his teeth a second later and squints through the pain.]

—It's not... that simple, either. What I'm saying is...

[Raggedly, still not blinking:]
People get hurt... when things happen to people they care about—and you both are.

Some part of him enjoys the pain, the fear, all of it is like a wine that he'd drink were this any other situation.

And his eyes narrow when the hand closes over his wrist. The hated Innocence is thrumming like a machine warming up to be used. And mother of mercy, hallelujah the brain works. I kept trying to say this situation wasn't simple and I needed time to cool off.

[Even if he was planning on months of that 'cooling off' and not a few days. Petty, yes. As the energy fades and the rage dies down to the dull roar that comes when Innocence touches him, he shakes his head again.]

But look at the situation. [Really look at it, child. See through his eyes a moment, as he gets up to let you up.] I'm still not coming back for a few hours. I need to think and if you made a mess in my house, you're cleaning it up.

Though as much as he's like to gasp for air at the release of his neck, he just inhales a low breath slowly, watching Tyki back off with hooded eyes before he starts to sit up as well.

Exhaling then, he's almost surprised by how much relief comes from it.]

—She's the one who made a mess before I even got there. [It might be a quip, as dryly as it's said, but his expression remains serious.

Except there's still something that doesn't quite make sense to Allen—what started this, other than it was building for a while, other than nothing was still really solved... The 14th would still hang between them.

... And that it was something he, perhaps, started as well.

But even so... strangely, Allen feels a little better about the situation.

But maybe he doesn't need to know whatever happened that pushed this over the edge, even if it makes him uneasy if it happens again and next time it won't just be bears and Rhode's feelings (sanity?) that suffer.]

That's a different kind of mess. You're a man, and men clean up after themselves instead of being dicks and making other men clean up after them. [Tyki scrubs the blood off of his pants and feet with practiced ease. The experience can from washing dirt and coal dust off of his body after a day in the mines. Sometimes he missed that work. Ones that never left him completely. His hair was easy to clean even if he held it up like he was going to chop it short.]

Wash that shoulder out or it will give you trouble later.

It's not even that he's standing close to Tyki, but close enough they're still there and for all practical purposes cleaning themselves up in the river. Exorcist and Noah. Blood and dirt in the water.

It's surreal after moments ago; even Allen knows that. And it still doesn't sit well with him, not at all, but he's here. After all, we're both messes now, Tyki, aren't we.

Allen has to pause as well, bending to wring some of the bloody water out of the shirt but watching Tyki from the corner of his eye for a moment.

But we're getting better, too.]

[Tyki raises an eyebrow at the flat stare. Whether he meant it crassly or not, he wasn't going to pass up an opening like that.] Your mind jumps to that rather fast.

[But the black finally recedes, as he peels off his shirt and scrubs it in the water. There's a hint of it before it fades entirely, leaving just the full view of his bare back and chest. Normally he kept the scars mostly covered up, now they were exposed. He tried not to be too self conscious about that.

They stretched from one side of him to the other, grim reminders of the lethal ability of Allen's blade.

Yes, we're both messes. He watches the Exorcist out of the corner of his eye for a moment and snaps his shirt out, free of blood and gore.]
