The day Carol found out....(Years ago)
He was going to tell her today.

The secrecy, the near misses, the ducking out at odd moments, and a million other things were adding up. Hal Jordan has dated a lot of women who weren't terribly intelligent (and a lot who were dumber than a box of rocks), but Carol Ferris doesn't even come close to being one of those women, despite Hal's desire to think so. Eventually, she'll figure it out. Hell, Bruce did, and it hadn't taken him long. Then again, Bruce Wayne was probably the strangest man he'd ever met.

The kiss was the last straw.

So Hal takes a deep breath and walks to the door of Carol's office, knocking before entering. He's wearing his usual brown leather jacket, his hands stuffed in his pockets. He can't show her the ring yet; he needs to prepare her.

"Hey, Boss Lady. You got a minute?" Hal asks, affecting his trademark playboy smile as he leans against the door frame.

"I need to talk to you about something." he says. "Something important."

He steps into the office and walks over to her desk.

"I haven't been completely honest with you."

All right, he had her full attention.

She sat back in her chair and gave him a once over. He definitely looked guilty about something to her, and that wasn't a good thing in her ace pilot. "Is this a sitting down confession or do you need to stand over me?"

"Actually, it's good that you're sitting down, because I'd ask you to if you weren't." Hal says.

"Look, I know I've been dodgy around you lately. We were out at dinner last week and I skipped out on you. I skipped out on you at the bar the week before that.

And two weeks before that, I called out ten minutes before I was supposed to go up because I was sick." Hal says, feeling bad that he hadn't called Carol about that; he'd told Tom to deliver the message.

"You've me the Green Lantern, right?" Hal asks, abruptly switching gears.

"You skip out on me a lot, Jordan." It was something she could ignore until he started listing the incidents. A suggestion of a frown crossed her face. "We need to talk about your flight schedule here, Hal. Skipping out on me is a lot different than skipping out on Ferris Air."

The abrupt switch made the tiny hairs rise on the back of her neck. "I've met the Green Lantern. Every woman's dream. What about him? Is he looking to moonlight at an air field?"

Hal's cocky grin returns as Carol describes her impression of the Green Lantern, but he quickly gets it under control.

"Carol, you're amazing, not only as a boss, but as a friend and more. I don't want to put you in an uncomfortable position, or mess up things around here, which is why I need to tell you what I'm about to say." he says.

"I'm the Green Lantern and I have been for quite awhile." he says.

"Every time I ducked out on you...it was because people needed help, and I had to be there." he says.

She blinked at him. Hal might not have been the most reliable guy she knew, but he wasn't a liar. Lame excuses, yes, but not outright lies that she could remember.

"You. Are. The Green Lantern." No, it didn't sound any better. Or worse. That was something. "How long have you been moonlighting as a superhero?"

"You remember that plane crash a few years back out in the desert? That odd aircraft they brought back and kept all hush-hush up at the Edwards Air Force Base when I still in the Service?" he asks.

"The ring came to me when the ship crashed. There was an alien, and Ungaran, by the name of Abin Sur, inside the ship." Hal says, his voice becoming quiet.

"He was dying and the last thing he did was send his ring out to find a new bearer. I got there as soon as I could after I found the ring, but it was too late. I've been doing this ever since." he tells her.

"The universe is divided into 3600 sectors, Carol. We're in Sector 2814, and there are a lot more populated planets than you know. I'm basically the top cop for this whole sector." Hal says.

It was true she'd never seen Hal and Green Lantern together. It made a crazy kind of sense. Maybe she could get him to introduce her to the Batman. Strictly for curiosity's sake, of course.

"I'm...surprised, but not really," she said slowly. "You've kept this from me for long time."

"I have. I didn't want to put you in danger, Carol. I wear a mask to keep my family and friends out of danger. I didn't want to lie to you, Carol, but it was that or tell you a story you might not believe." Hal says.

"Why are you telling me this now?" As soon as the words were out of her mouth she thought she knew. He was quitting Ferris Air. The demands she put on him must be interfering with the Green Lantern.

But it was a business she desperately needed to keep competitive and if that meant bribing him...with what, exactly? There wasn't much she could offer. She'd have to put herself on the schedule and fly some of the contracts herself.

Oh, great. She was just waiting to fire him.

"Carol, I'm telling you this because I wanted to be honest with you. I like that we work together, and that...we're friends. But most of all, I need you to know that I can't stop doing my job. I'm a Green Lantern.

I need to know if that's going to be a problem for us." he says.

"For us? I don't see how things will change. I'll know you're helping people as the Green Lantern and not ditching me for the the blonde in the sandwich shop two blocks over." Her mouth sort of smile. It was going to take some getting used to on her part.

"Business-wise, I'll need another pilot to fill in behind you when you're not available. We're stretched thin now and I don't have time to handle some of those contracts myself."

"I'll find you someone, or help out whenever I can. I never want to leave you high and dry, Carol. Besides, you're grumpy when you don't get what you want." he grins.

"I might even know someone who could help out, but I need to make some calls." he says.

"Oh, and the Sherri, the blonde at the sandwich shop? She thinks I'm seeing you, so she ended things. There goes my free lunch." he jokes.

"If that's a hint I need to raise your salary, you're dreaming," she said with a laugh. "The fact is, Hal, you're one of the best pilots out there and I don't want to lose you, even if you're hot dogging it through flight trials. I'll understand the need to be gone, but don't leave me hanging. You won't like grumpy, society princess me if you do."

"I'll still be grumpy if you have to run when we're at dinner, but I'll cut the princess act for that."

"You play the Ice Queen pretty well, Carol, but it's wasted on me. Besides, I'll just charm you into thawing out and we'll start this whole process again." Hal smirks.

"But I'm glad you didn't freak out over this. I should have known you'd take it in stride. So...to show my appreciation, and apologize for all those times I ran off, I'd like you to meet me out at the hangar at 8:30 tonight." he says.

"Oh, and don't eat beforehand."

"Show me my company's financial statement in the red and watch me freak out." She tried for Ice Queen now and knew it wouldn't work. If it wasn't related to her business, Hal could melt her quickly enough.

"I'm glad you finally did tell me. 8:30." She wrote it down as she said it. "Just promise to feed me afterward. I happen to know you just got paid."

"What, do you know my boss or something? She's a real hard-ass and she never lets up on me. Always calls me out on my crap. She's also one of the best people I know. I'll introduce you two sometime." he grins.

"And yes, I'll take you to dinner afterward, if you're still hungry. Just now sure how hungry you'll be after...well, you'll see." Hal grins, turning to go.

"Oh, and you don't have to dress up for tonight. Nothing fancy. In fact, the more casual, the better." he says as he leaves.

"I like her already," Carol called after him.

She swiveled the chair around until she was facing away from the door and anyone who might be looking. When the door closed, she quietly freaked out.

Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern. I'm dating the Green Lantern. The Green Lantern works for me.

Whoever said you didn't get your money's worth sure didn't have her employee roster.
