First Flight (Years ago)
The plane explodes, through no fault of Hal's own, and he finds himself hurtling toward the ground at brain-melting speed. He's not afraid, however, because he's still got a parachute and a secret weapon to his name, one given to him only days ago by a dying alien named Abin Sur. He still can't believe that happened.

He pulls the level on his seat to deploy his chute...and it doesn't open. It's jammed. He gives it several more tugs, but no dice. Okay, time to call in the secret weapon. He concentrates on the green ring itself, feeling it several miles away, back at the airfield, but realizes another important thing when he focuses it on it.

He forgot to charge it this morning. Okay...that's going to make things difficult.

Don't panic, Jordan. You're used to not working with a safety net. That ring didn't make you the best; it's not going to do that now, either.

Of course, he's still falling.

"Okay. It seems that you and I have gotten off on the wrong foot." Hal says, trying to defuse the situation, though this guy is pissing him off the longer he speaks.

Then he's dropped unceremoniously to the ground and /that/ tears it.

"Look, pal. I'm sure that, wherever you're from, people hop to attention and scurry around like chickens with no heads because you raise your voice. But I'm the Green Lantern of this sector, and you need to learn about a little thing called respect. Don't insult my planet or my people simply because we don't have whatever super-technology you're used to." Hal says irritably.

"I don't wear the ring when I fly because I don't like working with a safety net. I have a life, a job and other commitments outside the ring, but it, and Abin Sur, chose me to wield it." Hal says.

"If you don't like it, you go talk to the little blue men and lodge a complaint in the complaint box that they aren't using. Otherwise, start by telling me your name, what sector you're from and what the hell you're doing in mine and on my planet." Hal says.

I see his true face. Arrogant, rash, short-tempered. Sinestro looked Jordan in the eye, his alien eyes seeming to glow yellow in the bright sun. The human did not flinch, not for a second. Likely a result of alien social mores, rather than true courage Sinestro thought.

"I am a superior officer and you will address me as Sir." Sinestro was feeling generous, however, perhaps because he approved of fiery response the Human had given, when Sinestro had insulted his species. Sinestro was still right about humanity, of course, but he didn't expect any earth-man worthy of Abin Sur's attention to openly declare their inferiority.

"I am Sinestro, of sector 2815. Called 'the Greatest Lantern to Ever Serve' by Corps and Guardians alike." He said softly, dangerously.

"Okay, that's all well and good, Sinestro, but this planet is a lot like others. I'll respect you as someone who's been in the game longer than me, but other than that, you've got to earn it.

Blowing up my expensive plane and threatening my job security isn't getting you anywhere." Hal says, getting up off the ground. He wasn't going to cower just because this guy said he was the 'Greatest Lantern to Ever Serve'.

"And we've got a saying here on Earth, man. There's always a bigger fish out there. You're the best now, but someone is going to show up and go beyond what you've done. No one stays on top forever, so you should treat people with respect. You never know if the next guy you bash on will end up being your boss someday." Hal tells him.

Sinestro laughed at Jordan's last comment. In truth it wasn't a very pleasant sound coming from him.

Sinestro's arms stayed crossed across his chest, in fact he didn't move at all, but suddenly dozens of constructs sprang forth all around them. Each one was completely unique, tailored to some specific task- some gathered pieces of wreckage and scrap metal, others bathed bent and warped pieces of fabric in green light- reforming them at the molecular level, and the rest did things of such speed and complexity that one could not be sure. Like a symphony of light, the constructs whirred around them.

"I know as little about the specifications of your primitive aircraft, as I do about siege warfare on medieval Thanagar," he said dryly. "But such knowledge is not required, when you truly embrace the power you possess" Sinestro said. The green constructs began to mass in the air above them, rebuilding the aircraft before their eyes. Sinestro came to stand beside Jordan, and looked up at the aircraft as the constructs worked "These are performing tasks so varied and complex that no one being could hope to possess the knowledge to understand them all..." he said. In under a minute, the plan was reconstructed, and carefully lowered onto the ground in front of them.

Every bolt was in place, every seal was firm, every circuit and byte of digital information was accounted for. The tank was even full of fuel- which seemed impossible, because surely that would have been burned in the explosion...

"To truly unlock your potential, you must realize that you do not NEED to know every aspect of what you require of your ring- simply possess the will and clarity of purpose to make it so."

Sinestro turned to Jordan, raising an eyebrow. "When you are capable of such a feat, THEN I will give you the respect you believe you are due." Sinestro said. He floated into the air, and looked back down at Jordan. "I will be returning periodically to monitor your progress. Make note of it."

After waiting for Jordan's response, Sinestro flew up into the atmosphere- and was gone...
