Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
I managed to get a day ahead on making my cake for Cake Decor and Sugar Cookery. The cake has been baked, filled with coffee-flavored icing, stacked, imperfections repaired, crumb-coated, I made new/fresh icing, and iced the cake. So it just has to wait until I can decorate it. I'll be working on more icing roses until Tuesday when I have to decorate it in class. I'll make sure to take pictures, but until then...

Those are the 9 roses that I've decided I like enough to use. :3 I still have a few that i need to make... but I decided to do varying simplicities and colors so that it looks more realistic on the cake. :D Hopefully I'll get a good grade for it.

...I'm wondering though, since a large portion of our grade is based upon improvement, if I should stop trying to get better at each thing before it's due. >__>; I've been practicing by making tons of these with the intent of getting better, but now I'm thinking it might not have been such a good idea since our teacher is kind of old fashioned. She might not... really... understand that some people spend a lot of time practicing so they can improve over the course of a week. And believe me, those are improvements from my first ones. Which she didn't see because she was busy talking to her friends from the retirement home that had come to hang with her during class. -facepalm-

...I hope I didn't just fuck my grade over by being a good student.

That's a really handy tip! I'm like...a horrible mess when it comes to baking. I'm good at most everything else but baking and pastries and all that...yeah it's not pretty.

It's so cool to read about your school adventures. I'd like to be a chef myself (which worries me because I hope I don't have to take pastry
classes because I will fail that with flying colors) one day so I think entries like this are really exciting!

You might be surprised about pastries. I used to actually believe I was absolutely horrible at making desserts and was only good at meals and such, but after you learn a few key things about how to cook certain things (how to melt/cool chocolate properly, properly sifting your sugar, the different kinds of flour and why All Purpose Flour is good for "everything" and absolutely nothing at all, and a few other little things.)

I think... you might have to take a pastry class or two, but I wouldn't really worry about it. I'm aiming to be in pastries and cakes, so mine's more concentrated on those things... but there are a lot of classes that aren't, I'm sure you'll be fine. :3 But, I'll hopefully be able to continue chronicling my adventures in pastry land! We're decorating the cakes on Tuesday, so hopefully mine will turn out alright. My first decorated cake, I'm excited. X3
