Just Trying to Help (Test Scene B)
Jo breaks up her seventh mugging of the evening, sprinting out of the alley and along the streets of Metropolis, trying to ease her brother's workload. Jon's been working overtime since Dad died and he's had some other things on his mind, but he wouldn't ask for help, not from her at least.

So Jo Kent is out on the streets as...whoever she's supposed to be, trying to help her big brother one of the few ways she knows how.

She comes home to find that Mom is still sound asleep upstairs and hopes that she beat Jon home, because it wouldn't do any good to have avoided Mom waiting up for her only to have her brother doing the same.

"You always know the right thing to say, Jon. Just like Dad." Jo says, hugging him close. She'd had no idea that her brother ever felt anything other than confident or brave. Jon not only looked like their father, he reacted to things in the same way. He didn't take shortcuts and he always did the right thing by those around him.

"I never want to let you, Mom or Dad down. Somedays, I think I really could be happy just being a reporter or an anchorwoman or even a writer and going around the world and telling people about things they need to know, but don't.

But then...sometimes I help save someone or I go for a run to Egypt just because I can and I want to help that way, too." she says.

"What was it like for you when you went to learn about Krypton? Do you feel like it helped you decide about what to do when you came home? Did you ever think about /not/ coming back?" she asks.

He nods. "You're a great journalist. And telling people about the things that Lex Luthor, or whoever is doing and trying to hide... that's brave too... and someone needs to do it. If that's what makes you happy - do it."

He pauses after that.
"No. It helped in that I got some time away, to kind of see more of the universe past Earth. But where Krypton was... there's no answers there. I don't know why I thought there might be - but going to Tamaran, visiting the New Gods, a lot of that - helped with some perspective. Still, it was never going to be permanent. This is my home, and I've always wanted to be a super hero."

Jo nods at Jon's words, thinking things over as they talk. She used to wonder if Jon would ever come back some days and she was glad when he did. The world needed him the same way it needed Dad.

"It suits you, you know." she says. "You're okay with being part-Kryptonian and everything that comes with it. There were a lot of things I didn't get to ask Dad and now...I probably never will." she says.

He nods. "Me too." he agrees. "I was just never sure what to ask. With no Krypton, its hard to say just what being half-Kryptonian means... that's part of why I went out there. And I never really did get any answers."

"Were they any other races out there that ever knew the Kryptonians and what they were like? Some besides Dad has to have some records or something, right?" Jo asks.

"The Kryptonians... weren't xenophobic, precisely, but they were pretty.... well, for all their science, they had a small town mentality as far as I could figure. Considering there weren't any off-planet when it blew up? Other than exiles in other dimensions and all. Not a lot of galactic contact, seemingly by choice. I couldn't find any."

"I guess that makes sense, though with a few notable exceptions, all the Kryptonians Earth has ever seen usually want to take it over. Grandpa Sam isn't fond of meta-humans and the like, even after everything Dad did to save the world over and over again, after everything the Justice League has done, it's like he just can see past Superman being an alien.

I'm glad the rest of the world doesn't think the same way." she says.

"True, but then a number of those were considered criminals on Krypton too, so they're not a very good measuring stick. You're right though, some people are always going to see things through whatever lens they've decided fits. Really, that's part of why people like you and mom are so important - you change and shape the world every bit as much as people in costume do."

Jo thought that over. Mom and Dad had shown that words did have real power. Their articles over the years had both raised and brought down many businessmen and politicians who thought they either had no chance or that they were untouchable and Mom's words had helped the heroes a lot over the years.

Maybe Jo could do the same for Jon and everyone else.

"So, do I get an interview with Superboy in the near future?" she asks.
