09:01 pm: HallowCheap - Fast and Inexpensive Costumes for Halloween
Halloween is only a couple weeks away – plenty of time to put together an inexpensive costume.

For the next two days only, all Halloween costumes are 50% off with a student discount at Shindigz,

Spirit Halloween Stores are also offering 10% cash back on all purchases made through Student Rate.com

If you want to do it yourself, here are some ideas for costumes you can make with recycled or inexpensive materials. Get a start now so you don’t have to do emergency management at the last minute.

Scarecrow - Borrow some clothes from a larger friend including a shirt and blue jeans or overalls. Cut patches from an old flannel shirt or blanket and tape them to the clothes. Use rope for a belt, and to tie the ends of your sleeves and pant legs. Fill up the baggy clothes with newspaper, grocery bags or other clothes. Stick some straw out of the cuffs, wrists and neckline. Top it off with an old hat.

Static Cling - Wear jeans or sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Use safety pins to attach socks, underwear and dryer sheets to your clothes. Gel or spray your hair so it sticks up.

Mummy - This one is really easy. Wrap yourself in gauze or toilet paper.

Mother Nature - Collect flowers, leaves, branches, rocks, etc. Use a glue gun to attach them to your clothes. Make a wreath of twigs or leaves for your head. Carry a  plush bird or squirrel.  Add a construction helmet to be an environmental engineer.

Cereal Killer - Gather empty cereal boxes. Cut slits in them and glue plastic or butter knives in the slits. Use red paint or lipstick to look like blood running from the cuts. Then attach the boxes to your clothes.

Balloon Grapes - Attach green, red or purple balloons to your clothes with safety pins. Paint your face brown.

Black Eye Pea - Wear all white. Cut out black letter Ps from construction paper or felt and pin them to your clothes. Paint a black ring around one eye. This is a great group costume.

Laundry – Find an old plastic laundry basket and cut a hole in the bottom so you can wear it, sitting on your hips. Fill the basket with laundry.

Rubicks Cube – Find a large cardboard box you can wear. Tape squares of different colors of paper  to the sides in the pattern of a Rubick’s cube.

Dice – This one is great for a couple. Paint or cover wearable boxes with white. Cut out black circles from construction paper or felt and glue them to the sides.

Clothesline –This is another great group costume. Attach a rope to one person’s shoulder with a safety pin, drape it across their front and pin it to the other shoulder, then drape a couple of feet of the rope and attach it to the next person in the same way.. Use clothespins to attach pieces of clothing to the pieces of rope in between each person.

10:52 pm: How to Get Top Quality Clothes at Bargain Basement Prices

As you start to plan for a good paying career, you need to start thinking about packaging yourself for that career.

Thrift stores are a great place to get good deals on household items and clothes. You can find designer clothes for pennies on the dollar. But, if you purchase items you can’t use because they don't wash well, don't fit or show wear, it’s not a good deal.

Make sure you get the best merchandise possible when you shop the thrift stores. Here are some tips:

·         Look for low-cost clothes with high-quality fabrics. Look at the labels for natural fibers including cotton, linen, corduroy and wool. Avoid acrylic fabrics that don’t wear as well.

·         While you’re checking the fabric type, look on the tag for laundry instructions. Make sure you purchase clothes that are easily washed. Silk, cotton and linen fabrics can bleed or pick up other colors, and are sometimes difficult to launder.

·         To check whether a garment needs to be ironed, squeeze a handful of fabric in your hand for a few seconds. When you open your hand, see if the fabric shows wrinkles. If it does, you may have to spend time ironing, or it will become easily wrinkled.

·         Notice how the fabric lays. High quality clothing drapes and flows smoothly.

·         Check to make sure all buttons are intact and buttonholes are well-sewn.

·         Check the seams to make sure they are straight and the fabric edges are finished. Wide seams are a sign of good-quality garments.

·         Look at the hem. It should be wide enough to accommodate alterations and to help the garment lay properly.

·         Check any elastic to make sure it stretches evenly.

·         Look for any stains, marks, tears or worn spots.

·         Make sure the garment fits comfortably. Clothing that is too tight doesn’t look good, and it wears out prematurely. Remember that cotton, linen and rayon can shrink and expand.

With a little thought, picking the right clothes is as easy as picking the right career for you.

03:17 pm: Go Greek on the Cheap
Is joining a sorority or fraternity in your college plan? Then plan on spending some money. Fraternity or sorority membership fees can be anywhere from $400 and up. If you plan on living in the house, your room and board may be lower than dorm costs, but not always.

And then there are the “miscellaneous” costs. Ladies especially, you know what I’m talking about. And if you don’t, then study up! The good news is, you can go Greek on a budget. While you can’t reduce the costs of membership fees and housing, there are many things you can do to save on all those “extras.” Here are some examples:

Pin or badge - Some sororities require all sisters to wear the same style pin. Others let you choose from a variety. A silver, rather than gold pin, or one with pearls rather than diamonds, can be just as pretty and less expensive. If you are a legacy – meaning you have a mother, sister, or other close relative who was in the same sorority, see if she would be willing to give or loan you her pin. A “vintage” pin would be a charming accessory, and she would probably be flattered to have you wear it in her honor. You can also look on eBay. In a recent scan of auctions for sorority jewelry, pins sold from $15 to $120. Retail, these same pins are priced $50 to $200. Other jewelry – lavalieres, bracelets and keychains can also be found on eBay.

Gifts for sisters – Sorority sisters come up with all kinds of reasons to give gifts. These items do not have to be expensive. Here are some ideas for inexpensive, but heartfelt gifts for Greeks:

Picture Frames – Buy a plain inexpensive frame and embellish it with your sorority’s letters cut from inexpensive felt or foam sheets.

Journals – Buy a pretty blank book and cover it with pictures or use markers or fabric paint to decorate it.

Cookies – Buy Greek letter cookie cutters and make a batch of cookies. You can use the same cookie cutters as stencils for other projects as well. Or make a big cookie using a pizza pan and decorate it with frosting letters.

Plush – You can an find inexpensive stuffed animals in the dollar store. Use puffy fabric paint to embellish one with your letters, or paint a baby t-shirt for it to wear.

And then there is the matter of wardrobe…

Almost as difficult as how to decide on a career, is deciding which sorority to pledge. To help you make this decision, potential sisters are required to attend a number of Rush events including:

  • House Visits
  • Socials
  • Skit Nights
  • Cocktail parties
  • Formal Dessert
  • Mixers with fraternities
  • One-on-one interviews

Each event has a particular type of dress required. Here is a list of events and type of clothing for each one. You can spend literally thousands of dollars on a “sorority rush wardrobe.” You don’t need a fashion merchandising degree to be frugal and fashionable.

Consignment shops sell designer clothing, some of it that has been worn only once or twice, for pennies on the dollar.

If you have friends going through rush at nearby schools, pool your resources and see if you can borrow items – this works especially well for pricey or trendy accessories.

To extend your wardrobe, stick to basics. Pick a basic color palette and build your wardrobe around it. You can “multi-purpose” shoes, cardigans, handbags and jewelry that will match several outfits.
